This happens in old releases and MC 21.

Steps:
1. Create Smartlist "MyMusic\Base Music" that includes a bunch of music
2. Create Smartlist "5 Star":   Playlists, is any, Eric\Base Music   && Rating, is, 5 stars
3. Save playlist
4. Edit playlist and see that it remained correct
5. Restart JRiver, Edit playlist and see that it remained correct.
6. Go to another PC and load the library remotely.
7. Again notice that playlist looks correct.
8. Wait some indeterminate amount of time (days maybe?  don't know if restarts, full reboots, modifications from either side, etc)
9. Edit Smartlist again on either side and notice that playlists rule has change from:
-     Playlists, is any, MyMusic\Base Music
to
-     Custom,  [Playlist ID]=

This has been happening to me for years, and I've never been able to figure out what is causing it.  Any ideas would be appreciated.

This is a long standing bug that's part of a larger problem.  See this thread for a little discussion of your exact problem:

Then linked from there is a thread with a long history detailing some other client to server playlist editing bugs:

Thanks Brian.  That is exactly it.   I suspected remote editing of the playlist, but dismissed it because I know there have been times when it has happened without me making remote edits.  However, I can't speak to the kids...

Is there a timeframe on getting this fixed?   Or at least preventing it so that remote playlists don't get trashed and require rebuilding?   I can remember to only do changes on the server, but the rest of the family - not so much.

Given the number of years, we don't think there will be a quick fix for this problem, however, if, on the server, you employ the 'playlist' shorthand "p", that should prevent your smartlists from getting broken in this way.

"p" takes a value from the 'tree path' of the smart playlist.

-p="some value" to exclude a smartlist or playlist
p="some value" to include a smartlist or playlist
