HELP DSD
« on: September 16, 2016, 08:29:20 pm »

Why can't dsd work after configuring it with ASIO without having to tweek all the settings?

First i was getting stuttering and i changed several things and it is no longer stuttering, but i don't know what i did to fix it...i know i changed abourt 4 or 5 settings including  to "play from memory" and set buffer to 20 seconds instead of default 6...i don't remember what else i changed, but there were a few other settings...anyway...now it is not stuttering, but i have another problem.

I see on my TEAC NT501 that it is playing in PCM.  I want native DSD.
i remember changing a few other configurations which i thought would make it play DSD natively, but i see an error that says "not using enough bits" and i read some people say that is because my dac won't support it, but i am trying to play a dff 352K i think it said, and i know my dac will do 512k (4X DSD)...so i don't know whats up?

SO my questions are:
1.  Why can the authors make DSD work without all the tweeking
2.  What do i need to do in my particular case in the short term to get native dsd to work now until the authors can figure out how to make DSD work out of the box in native mode without all the configuration changes necessary.....  Other players can play dsd right out of the box without having to jump through hoops, so why can't JRiver?

someone else pointed out to me the issue was bitstreaming needed to be set to dsd.

I would hope future releases will either have a wizard and ask if you want to configure for native DSD and then it make all the necessary tweeks...or maybe have a set of configurations for different devices or some other way without having to hunt and search several settings to make dsd work out of the box without having to spend an hour searching and guessing in the myriad of settings....

I'm new to jriver (still on month trial) and also new to dsd. Ive some high res albums but not dsd. These play ok on my chord hugo tt. I got some free download dsd tracks to try out the format. =Major stuttering occurred. I also tried a few things like silencing mic in windows and increasing buffering to 10 secs.........What settings should be used/changed in order to play dsd? And if in future i have a mix of dsd and pcm files will jriver play them seamlessly without needing settings changes?

What type of hardware (CPU, memory, OS, etc.) are you trying to listen to DSD with? Try running the Benchmark (Help menu > Benchmark...) and post the results here. :)

I don't work for JRiver... I help keep the forums safe from Viagra and other sources of sketchy pharmaceuticals.

The OP is attempting to play DSD source material, not convert PCM to DSD. Bitstreaming DSD to the DAC does not tax the CPU.

Where are the files located? On a drive local to the computer that is connected to the DAC, or on a NAS?

I needed to change the DSD settings to output in dop format. Now it works fine.😊

Partly for my own benefit I looked into 'DoP', it wasn't what I thought it was. . .  :)

From this site: http://www.dcsltd.co.uk/support/what-is-dop-dsd-over-pcm/

"FAQ: What is DoP (DSD over PCM)?

The original idea for DoP was invented by dCS in 2011. It involves taking groups of 16 adjacent 1-bit  samples from a DSD stream and packing them into the lower 16 bits of a 24/176.4 data stream. Data from the other channel of the stereo pair is packed the same way. A specific marker code in the top 8 bits identifies the data stream as DoP, rather than PCM. The resulting DoP stream can be transmitted through existing 24/192-capable USB, AES, Dual AES or SPDIF interfaces to a DoP-compatible DAC, which reassembles the original stereo DSD data stream COMPLETELY UNCHANGED.

If something goes wrong and the data stream is decoded as PCM, the output will be low-level noise with faint music in the back ground, so it fails safely. This can happen if the computer erases the marker code by applying a volume adjustment."
