Problem with uhd bluray subtitles
« on: October 14, 2017, 05:29:04 am »

I installed JRiver Media Centre 23 64bits to test it before buying a license. I have a problem with the subtitles of the movie "Life (2017) 4k". First I used MPC-HC with madVR and LAV Filters and the playback is smooth. Then I used JRiver with the same settings (madVR and LAV Filters) and the playback is smooth if I do not activate the subtitles. If the subtitle is active, when the subtitles appear on the screen the playback is not smooth because the CPU works at 100%.
I do not understand why using MPC-HC does work and using JRiver does not work.
Any suggestions? Can you change the internal subtitle renderer of JRiver?

Windows 10 home 64bit
JRiver 23.0.70 64bit
MPC-HC 64bit
madVR v0.92.6
Lav Filters 0.70.2
CPU i5 3450
GPU RX470 4GB
4GB RAM
Thank you...

Try setting MC to both Red October Standard and Red October HQ.  Don't modify any madVR settings.  Does either one work?

If not, try installing 23.0.72:

Hello, after investigating a little, I have located the problem. In madVR I have activated the option "convert HDR content to SDR by using pixel shader math" and within this setting I have activated "high quality". If I choose the "low quality" option the playback is smooth with the subtitles turned on but the video loses a lot of quality.
I think JRiver has a hard time rendering the subtitles with the settings that gives more quality. If I use MPC-HC the playback is smooth with "high quality". Must be an internal subtitle renderer problem that JRiver uses, it must be different from the one used by MPC-HC.

Excuse me, but can you see the BD-UHD with JRiver? I did not know it was possible

Yes, you can. You have to select the m2ts file containing the movie with "open media file".
The next version of LAV Splitter will allow you to open UHD in the same way BD.

I knew there was a need for a heavy hardware update (mobo with SGX and hdcp 2.2, Intel 7 ^ gen, etc.) and software (win10 and PDVD17): how can you do with old hardware and software?

Media Center will only support playback of decrypted UHD discs, just like with normal Blu-rays right now. If your disc is already decrypted, none of those special requirements actually apply.

FYI - for those that have not seen this thread - UHD Blu Ray Decrypter (DeUHD) we are discussing ripping and playback here.  There is also this thread 4K UHD PC drive testing on Drives
