License Server Cannot Be Contacted
« on: May 17, 2018, 02:12:25 pm »

I have just purchased the linux/windows license. When I enter the code into my Linux version it reports that there was a problem contacting the license server.

I have no firewall settings that prevent Media Centre from contacting the internet. Lookups for albums and covers work fine.

Any thoughts? I have three days of my free trial left and do not want to be without my music.

Maybe just a temporary issue? Did you try again?
Also, check the clock/time on your machine, since the connection is secure, a bad clock setting will make the security certificate for https look expired.

I have just reinstalled the application and I get the same problem whether I am logged in a root or a user.

Actions taken:

1. Downloaded latest version (24) in .deb format
2. Used alien -rcv {mediacenter...24...deb} to create an RPM
3. Installed from RPM
4. Ran application - ran fine.
5. Tried to install licence and got the same error message
6. Checked on recover page that I was using the correct code/version
7. Requested a resend of licence
8. Tried installing as user and root with the same problem.
===================================================
There was a problem restoring the license key

Error details:
There was a problem communicating with the license server.
===================================================

Any further thoughts?

Have you tried restoring a .mjr license file from the Terminal? It'd look something like this...

Code: [Select]
mediacenter24 /RestoreFromFile ~/Downloads/"Media Center24 Linux-YYYYYY.mjr"
Of course, change the ~/Downloads/"Media Center24 Linux-YYYYYY.mjr" part to the path of your .mjr file (or drag/drop the .mjr file into the Terminal so it'll paste the correct, full path to the .mjr file).

Tried installing as root with the same problem.

Don't do this, this can screw up a MC installation/settings - it's not meant to be ran as root. It's also a bad idea to log into the root account and try using MC that way too.

Firewall?  MC needs to connect via the Internet.

You didn't say if you checked the date/time as I suggested.

Sorry, I thought I had.  Yes.  My time is set using NTP and my firewall is disabled.

Is the .mjr file the same for both Linux and Window?.  The key worked for my Windows 10 platform without a hitch.

What port does the call to the licence server go out on?

What is the full version of MC?

What version of Linux?

I believe it just uses port 80.

Did you try this?

Did you try Awesome Donkey's advice above?

Yes. It's the same file. By using Awesome Donkey's suggestion, you'll avoid burning a licence restore. That .mjr file is good for 2 weeks.

Don't know. IME, I've never needed to worry about ports when running a licencing routine for Windows or Linux.

Thank you everyone.

I have managed to license my Mediacenter.  For further information I will outline the steps that I took.

MediaCenter version 24

Linux: Opensuse Leap 42.3

My executable is located in /usr/bin/mediacenter24 (I had installed using sudo zypper in Mediacenter.......rpm)

I copied my .mjr to /usr/bin using: sudo cp -f  "Media Center24 Master-123456.mjr" /usr/bin

Then cd /usr/bin

Finally ./mediacenter24 ./"Media Center24 Master 123456.mjr"

Up popped the successful registration box.  I had tried doing the above as root and su.  In both cases I got the successful registration flag but when I closed and reopened MediaCenter the license information said that the product was unregistered.  My successful registration was using the account that I had used when installed the .rpm package originally.

Thank you again everyone.  i will try not to be a pain in the future!  ;)

Never use root or sudo.
MC runs under a normal user account on linux.

Your inability to register using the UI is likely because your distro doesn't have the ssl certificates in /etc/ssl that the libraries linked in MC use to contact our license server.

Bob.

I would not normally run as root.  I tried it as a diagnostic.  Because I am going through an intermediate stage by converting a .den to a .rpm I was unsure of what alien may have been introducing.  It is a top tip not to use root as a default user.

Thanks you for the help and advice.  :)
