help need to setup MC to do DLNA push to Marantz AVR
« on: July 18, 2018, 10:15:46 pm »

Hi JRiver team,

I'm trying MC on Mac and like to push audio through DLNA to my Marantz AV-8802a. Prefer to control through cell phone/pad.

After config Media network, from 8802a side, I can browse through JRiver's albums, and can play flac, .dff without problem. However, when control from JRiver MC side, when play the same .dff/.flac there is either sound or only strange sound out from speakers.

I had tried following audio config all failed:
original
specified output format: 16 bit PCM / 24 PCM / 24 head less PCM

only MP3 works. But I think most people here will not use it. ..

Any suggestions can do? Is there any further config on Randerer's setting?

Regards,
Laser

There is a topic on DLNA on our wiki.  It would be good to understand it and use the correct terms.

If you're playing to the Marantz from JRiver, then JRiver is the DLNA Server and the Marantz is the DLNA Renderer.

In the Media Network settings for JRiver's DLNA Server, you can specify the conversion.  Turn it off so you get the original file.

You say it plays “strange sounds”. This suggests to me that you might have MC set up to push DOPE..

So in MC network DLNA server settings select it to push PCM L16 No Header, disable DSP, disable DOPE.

Hi Andrew,
Thanks for you reply.
Update my test result after audio set to "original" and disable DoPE
.flac .wav .mp3 work fine. 8802a can display correct format and sample rate.
.dff .dsf still no sound, title showed on 8802a's screen, but without format showed.

Is there anything else I can try?

Try setting it to Convert dff and dsd to PCM L16 no header..

Hi Andrew,
I tried following all failed
set to specify output format + PCM 16
set to specified output format + PCM L16 no header
set to specified output format + PCM 24
set to specified output format + PCM L24 no header

original+ Bitsteam DSD (DoPE)          ---> showing PWM 176.4, no sound

--------------old fail test ------------------------------------
Original + Beatsteam DSD (DoPE) off

I saw another post have Marantz sr7xxx working with MC22 or 23 .. and someone mentioned
https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,114217.msg789714.html#msg789714  :

Make sure the volume is set to 100% or disabled. If MC is changing the bits to change the volume that can cause problems. Happens with WASAPI sometimes.

Is the volume config for local play? I think for Media Network -> add/config DLNA , if set to original, the DSP will off and should not have volume control. Am I right?
and in the working case, the setup is "Original + Beatsteam DSD (DoPE) off " .

Any suggestion to try? Should I try MC22 or MC23?

Update some log from MC24 on good .flac and fail on .dsf (original + Bitstreaming DSD (DoPE) disable)

fail case when streaming .dsf , marantz do not try to get .dsf file

Can anyone help to analyze the failure?
I captured network packets, but I'm not familiar with DLNA/UPNP.

Please confirm with Marantz (even the instructions) that the device plays the formats you're trying to play if you use DLNA.  The support may be only for a direct connection.

Jim the Op's original post seems to suggest that dff files play ok if pulled using the AV GUI to browse and select, it's only when pushed from the client where it fails:

...from 8802a side, I can browse through JRiver's albums, and can play flac, .dff without problem.

If this is correct the Marantz definitely supports the format.

"Supports the format" can be different, depending on the method of connection or playback.

But isn't it using DLNA in both instances?

Yes, as I understand it, but we've seen devices in the past that worked in one direction, but not the other.

Capabilities should be confirmed with Marantz support.  They can test with MC.

Ok got you now. By method you mean both DLNA but pull may be supported and push may not be.

Cheers.

From the report, it looks like DSD is supported by 8802a.
But when I select to test DSD format, there is no test item to bring out for test. When I select flac, there are lot of test items for different sampling/channels.

Found another post successfully make DLNA push work for Marantz AV-8802a
Thanks for Kvothe in https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=109590.0

Turn off "DLNAExtra" checkbox, under Tools -> Options -> Media Network -> ...Add or config DLNA server...-> Advanced -> DLNAExtra

Thanks again for who ever read/help in the post...

It provides extended information in the DIDL (content directory entries) that pretty much all modern renderers should support (which is why it's on by default).
