Cannot play WMA on CLIENTS
« on: October 07, 2018, 11:18:03 am »

I have 445 WMA files. None of these WMA files will play on any of my CLIENTS (playback is fine on the SERVER). All the Clients can play all my mp3 and flac files. And I can play all these WMA files on the Clients using any other software except MC. When I try to play WMA on a Client, all I get is a pop up box - "Playback error. Something went wrong with playback".

MC v24.0.54 64bit. I have Client Audio Conversion set to - Don't convert audio.

Tell me if you need Logs.

And if I disconnect the Client from the Server (just use MC as a stand alone), I can play the WMA files just fine by right clicking the WMA file via network file browsing and choosing play with MC... So it's definitely something to do with being connected as a Client that is causing the "Something went wrong with playback" error.

I think MS made a change.  WMV should work again soon.  When it does, try WMA.  I believe it's related to DRM.

I think WMV was fixed in v24.0.56:
Fixed: WMV files which do not play with the Microsoft ASF/WMV reader will be opened with LAV Splitter instead, fixing playback.

And WMA plays fine on Server or stand alone MC, the only time it does NOT work is for MC CLIENT.

Check the conversion settings on the server.

Are they "protected" (DRM) files?

Protected = No.
Server and Clients audio conversion = don't convert.

Still no comments from developers... Can someone from the technical team please verify they are looking into this?

We can't reproduce this.  I just put a few WMA files in a playlist, shared my library with John, and he started playing no problem.

Could you maybe send a copy of one of the files that won't play on Library Server to matt at jriver?  I'll test that file as well.

Thanks!

Please tell me about how you "shared your library with John"? Is that a Server - Client setup? Because it ONLY happens when you are Serving a WMA file to a Client.

I have 445 WMA files, and will provide some in a few minutes...

Do you have Server and Client set for Audio Don't Convert?
Here's one full album of WMA music that won't play on clients:

I just put that album on my computer, had John connect again, made sure conversion was off, and he started playing no problem.

I can see it tries to play something, then gives a playback error. You don't see that?

Just re-created the problem and a new log. Clearly shows WMA...
