Pre-Order JRiver for Android at a Discount
« on: December 02, 2018, 01:03:05 pm »

We released a Preview of JRiver for Android this week.  Please look for the release topic in a thread on the MC24 board.  Look for a thread named "JRiver for Android 24.0.4  -- Available Here" or similar.

It's a media player for Android.  It can play to DLNA zones.  More capabilities are coming.

You can follow the link in the build thread to the Play Store.  It's currently $9.98 to purchase.

Thanks for your support of our work.

I just bought a Master License and hope Android might be included.
I have an Android Based desktop Media player and have thousands of videos I have recorded off of TV broadcasts over the years.  The Windows version of JRiver  Media player works great for searching through these titles and I like to use the LIST mode rather than "art" big icons and such.  I am wondering....will the Android version of Media Center port over well to my Android set top media player and have a similar  functionality....i.e. easy searches and list mode?  Thanks.

Because it's available in the Play Store for sale, it's likely it can't use "external" licenses due to Play Store policies.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S8 with a large SD card where all my music files sit. JRiver for Android does not find them, and I cannot find an option that tells it to look for files on the SD card.

Right now MC for Android requires music files to be in the Music folder on the internal storage. It doesn't support external storage (or changing the music directory) yet.

This should work in 24.0.15, now available on the Play Store.

Hi Jim

I just got JRemote to connect to JRiver for Android running on the same tablet. That presents some very interesting opportunities. :)

Not sure if you had intended for it to work that way but it works great so far serving audio up from the tablet back to itself for playback in JRemote..

:)

PS. It plays any FLAC file i can throw at it no problems. :)  Wont play DSF or DFF though... BUT... it does now allow you to set the tablet as a zone and push playback to it from another MC interface/device, using JRemote to control playback on the tablet to the local zone on the tablet called "Player".... very interesting... I can now also playback all my content in the car in JRemote with music on the internal sdcard.  Very cool!!  (Im using a 2018 Samsung Tab S4 with LTE/4G - a perfect device for this scenario) hmmm I wonder if it will pick up my 4TB hard drive plugged in via USB-C....

No luck with picking up the 4TB HDD..  I did find a permissions setting on JRiver Android server in Android App Settings to enable storage and that didn't make any difference. I guess you're only looking for default internal SD storage at this stage but external drives would be great.... (hmmm I seem to be having a sense of Deja Vu... Id development took a similar path..)

Speaking of which, this is the most exciting thing for me since putting 2TB inside my customer battery powered PiId.

If the Android OS can see the external drive, the latest version of JRiver for Android should be able to see it too. Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app?

Looking at the forum since some days,
I see the JRiver for Android.

3 questions:
1) is JRiver for Android able to play music stored on a NAS?
2) what is the maximum sampling rate and resolution it can handle in playing PCM?
2b) does it bypass the standard audio kernel of Android?
3) what about DSD\DXD ?

+ for the NAS question above. Also which is the library server Id to connect it to jremote or gizmo?

My possible use case for this? Shove an old android phone with our music library behind some pair of speakers and control it with jremote. Extra points if the files are in the same NAS from where my current Jplayer gets them.

Will this be possible?

We haven't really done any testing with a NAS yet; however, I doubt you would be able to import files from a NAS to JRiver for Android easily at this point. That being said, if you already have a Media Center server with files imported from the NAS, you could use JRemote and have the server play the files to JRiver for Android as a DLNA renderer.

Well that's kind of a big deal.  I can tell you my experience with Plex and Nvidia Shield (the superior android platform IMO).  They have this basic functionality working.  You can mount a network share for the collection, then store metadata on a local usb 3 stick.  I am doing this with Plex for my very large video collection.  I have a 128Gb high speed USB 3 stick that proved to be essential.  Unfortunately, Plex for music with a large music collection, pretty much sucks IMO.  JRiver does everything so much better.

I'll jump into this beta program since I want to see this succeed!

Don't know how to find the Access Key for JRemote or Gizmo. The network info button in the settings doesn't work.

I found the phone address and connecting to phoneip:52199 works! But having the access key would be great.

build 24.0.18

I do not particularly care about video functionality on my phone; I'd be happy with a good functional music player.

As android music players go, this one seems extremely basic, with little of the functionality I value from MediaCenter (windows) -- or from PowerAmp, which at this point is the best of class in my view, and also falls short.  Or maybe I'm just slow.  To begin with, things I'm trying to do with this build but can't seem to:
SOUND:  Modify sound (equalizer)
IMPORT:  Direct, navitgate, control, or Limit the import to certain areas of file storage (e.g. one folder named MUSIC)
PLAYLISTS:  Create (and sync) Playlist

Ideally, I want to
1.  sync my files (or selected files) to desktop files -- ideally with a tag or playlist of some kind - either wifi or wired.
At this point, I have a second music folder (MUSIC_SYNC) on my desktop for copies of files that I want to sync to my handheld, and I use an older version of dropsync (a dropbox folder sync app) to keep that folder synced with my handheld.  that way, e.g. if I'm away and I decide I don't really like a song enough to keep it on my handheld, I can delete it there and later when I sync, in the desktop folder it gets deleted also.  It's really just a clunky kind of list management.  It seems like the duplicates in the desktop folder shouldn't be necessary -- given how smart computers are and all.
I've often thought that the optimal method might be a Playlist called SYNC that could be used as the basis of a sync operation, but managing folder structures (on my desktop they're either by artist, or artist-album) might be tricky.

2.  sync my handheld playlists (or even select playlists) with my desktop playlists.

I thought I pre-ordered JRiver for Android but I can't find any reference. Is there a way to check before I buy it on the Play Store?

Thanks.

Refunds are only through Google and only for a short time (an hour?) and only once for each app.  Here's what they say:

"You may get an automatic refund if you uninstall a paid app shortly after first buying it. If you want to reinstall the app, you'll have to buy it again and you will not be eligible for a refund on that purchase."

Ok, got the e-mail that JRiver for Android developed on the Shield is close to ready.. I have 2 Shields, looked on Play Store on Shield for JRiver and couldn't find it.  How do I get my hands on this?  I've been waiting for a long time for this.

It's in the Google Play Store now. I just purchased/installed it on my NVIDIA Shield. It will still only work with media files stored on the Shield. I'm hoping it will eventually connect to my PC's Media Center server and play from that library. All of our media files are stored on our unRAID network server. For now, this app isn't able to do anything for me. I guess it's a donation to future development.

I'm still waiting too.  I have 2 Shields.  I really want it to be able to access my NAS box via SMB with JRiver.  As a point of reference, Plex can do this when running their server.  But Plex is awful for music and I really want JRiver.  I am also hoping this will work on Amazon Fire Sticks as well.

You can load a remote MC library, but there's a trick right now:

I haven't been "here" in some time.

But, I love JRiver and wondered if it was available for Android devices so here I am.
Needless to say I have some reading to do but this thread made my day. I have a couple of Android based items. A very inexpensive but now somewhat hard to find ONN 4K $20 Walmart thing and a Zidoo Z9X. My Nordic Track also seems to run on Android ... Imagine having access to JRiver on my treadmill .... could be life changing!

bhampster please don't get your hopes up - it's now workable but there are limits.

I was fooled into that preorder at the time, but whatever they had as "jriver on android" it was not what I would have imagined.
I'm sure the intention was true, but the limitations of android and perhaps also the android expertise in house just hadn't delivered.
It was a clunky player for local files.  Tried it last in the summer I think. I removed it in grumpyness.

Though having reinstalled it today following your post it is able to see some zones on my network and see the jriver library on my pc.
I was able to use my phone to change what was playing in my jriver on my desktop or any zones my desktop sees. I was able to play from that library on the phone.

Selecting is still clunky but we're a lot closer to what I expected back when I preordered. I'm still disappointed because some of the functionality I expected ended up in jremote/jremote2 but I don't have enough trust left to shell out another $10 and find out I still can't pick from my jriver library to play on my google speakers

JRiver for Android doesn't support Chromecast (Google).

The latest version lets you press and hold to get additional play options.
