Theater view: distorted menu text
« on: December 02, 2018, 02:14:23 pm »

I run MC24 on a Windows 7 (64-bit) desktop PC as a MC server.   The client is on another PC connected to the TV.

I have been running MC23 (32 bit) on that client.  Today I tried to upgrade to MC24 (64-bit).  The Theater View menus did not display correctly.  I am attaching two images, one showing MC23 working OK, and the other showing MC24 with distorted menu text.

The MC clients (23 and 24) were running on Windows 7, 64-bit.

Let me know if any further info is needed.

Are you sure the screen is working OK?

That looks rather like a damaged screen to me.....
Other than that no useful ideas :(

The version with the distorted text was"  MC24, 64-bit and 32-bit, Windows, 24.0.65.  I downloaded the install files today from the download page.

TV screen is working fine.  MC23 works without a problem (very nicely, btw).  My TiVo and Bluray player also work fine with the TV.

What kind of graphics card do you have in that system? Can you try updating the drivers?

Device Manager shows Intel Q45/Q43 Express Chipset under Display Adapter.

I'll check with the Intel site about latest drivers and report back (probably tomorrow, as the TV is otherwise in use for the evening).

Ok that sounds really old. I'll investigate if I can find something around my old hardware boxes to see if I can find something of similar age to test.

In the meantime, can you create a log file?
https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Logging

To keep the log short, enable logging as explained above, then restart MC, open theater view, close it, and follow the instructions to making a log package.

The PC is circa 2010.  Not "really old" in my book, e.g., my IMSAI 8080 is really old.   :)

btw, it is only the Theater View menus that seem to have the problem.  I watched some 1080i video last night without any problems.  Also, all the other non-theater-view menus work fine.

Attached please find the log package.

Let me know if there is any further info that can help.

thx.

Can you try this setting?
Settings -> Theater View -> Quality -> Anti-Aliasing: No Anti-Aliasing

I set anti-aliasing to No Anti-Aliasing.

The problem was still present.  I put the setting back to 4x...

btw, attached is a close-up image of what I see.  It is easier to see the distortion.  It looks like there is a line from top right to bottom left of each element.  To the right of that line, things go odd.

I've send you a Personal Message with links to two test versions to try to isolate the issue.
Can you test both versions, and report if it works in either of them, or anything changes at all?

Thanks for testing. I'll make sure to integrate those changes in the next official version.

OK, I'm so happy to see MC24 working in Theater View here that I've put it to use and I'm watching a bunch of stuff.

One regression I am noticing in test2 ... I'm seeing subtitles on videos.  I have subtitles set to "do not show subtitles" in options.

Let me know if you need more info.

thx.

In Theater View, try changing that.  Use the up and down arrows to get to subtitles, then left and right arrows to change.

OK, while in Theater View I did..

- pressed the up arrow until I saw Subtitles
- pressed left arrow to highlight "Off"
- let the menu time out to disappear

The subtitles were no longer seen as I watched the video.

Just for grins...

I backed out to the main Theater View menu, and selected Exit then Restart.

After the PC rebooted, I went back into MC-test2 and in to Theater View.

The subtitles were back.  So it seems the change for Subtitles to "Off" in the Theater View menu does not persist across a restart.

As a follow-up...

Last evening I used the test2 version in Theater View for about 6 hours, watching videos, listening to tunes.  Aside from the minor subtitle issue I mentioned above (and thanks to JimH for the workaround), MC-test2 performed completely as expected, which is to say, excellently!

Thanks!
