Tagging problem...
« on: February 21, 2019, 01:18:33 pm »

Hi there. I'm a brand new trial user, so please bear with me!

When I tag files (i.e. orchestra, soloists, conductor, etc) all is fine for a short while, then I get an error message telling me that MC cannot access files as they are 'read only' or 'in use' or 'not available'. When this happens, I close the program, re-open and check the last few entries I made; they are always there with no problems.

I can confirm that any tracks which are logged as causing an error are not 'read only', not 'in use' and definitely 'exist'.

Any advice?

Thanks.

I saw this after the last Windows update

Try

1 Check your main HDD with files on it , make sure it’s not set Read Only, some files arrive Read Only

2 check User\appsdata\roaming where the MC24 library lives, make sure that is not set Read Only

Mine came right with these 2 changes

If the tags are showing it probably means the library is Ok so try no.1 first

Hope this helps

Mike

Hi MikeO.

Tried as you sugested, but it didn't help. I'm now getting an error message after almost every tag change.

I might give up on this software, as I'm only using a trial version.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Hang in there.  It's unlikely to be a problem with JRiver Media Center.

Antivirus software can cause this kind of problem.

Windows itself has had some problems in recent updates.

Are you using any other tagging software such as MusiCHI?

No other tagging software now. This is getting to be unusable.

Please take a look at antivirus software.  Even Windows Defender can cause problems.

Tagging works pretty flawlessly if you are doing it on the main MC installation. This would suggest that something in your set up is causing a problem with the process. Commonly this is caused by windows defender blocking your write access to the files in question. How is your system set up?
It is worth looking at Awesome Donkey's thread on taming Windows Defender.

Do you have any other media player software active that might be watching the same folders? MC tagging does work very well, so your problems are definitely not caused by JRiver Media Center. If you can provide a detailed description of your setup I suspect someone here will be able to help you.

Ok People. I thank all of you for the advice.

I don't use Defender - it's switched off. All the work is done by ESET, where all of the paths suggested on the 'Awesome Donkey' page are already marked as exclusions.

I use Windows 10 Professional, completely updated as of today.

The software and appdata is all on an SSD. The music library is on one drive with the backup on another.

I have no other software that accesses these files.

Now that I am sure the tags are being written despite the message popping up all the time, I'm a bit more relaxed. But to be on the safe side, after each tagging session, I close the software and then reopen it and check my latest entries. It's a time-consuming nuisance though!

You can't turn Defender off.  It will turn itself back on.

It's very likely that the antivirus software is causing the problem

Uninstall ESET (to test).

Hi JimH.

I've tried with no ESET, and the same happens. (Aall the exceptions carried across to Defender...)

ESET takes over all the functions of Defender, it shows as OFF, and I have no access to any settings whilst ESET is running.

Windows Defender also has a ransomware protection called controlled folder access, you're not using that or something like that are you? If so, that *could* block MC from being able to write tags.

Otherwise you should go into the directory where the files are, right click on some of them and make sure the read only box isn't checked.

Did you try uninstalling it and rebooting?  Disabling it may not be enough.

I've not removed ESET. I would be extremely reluctant to run software that required me not to use ESET. However, I am now using a third-party SQL app to access the database, and update all the data. It seems to be working. This is a one-off job. I've been using MediaMonkey, but that became too unstable, so I'm transferring the data. Once that's done, I'll start to use MC to access and enjoy my collection - if necessary, try to get an extension on the trial period.

It would be great if I could figure out what has been going wrong!

Jim isn't saying uninstall ESET and leave it removed, he means to temporarily uninstall it to test and see if ESET is the cause of the issue with files being read-only. You'd be surprised how often antivirus/antimalware software causes strange issues.

Yes. I uninstalled ESET and the problem continues. ESET treats all the JRiver files as exceptions anyway. I've now re-installed...

As a test, put a single MP3 right on your main boot drive and import it.  Then tag it.  Does that work?

Then move that same MP3 to your storage drive.  Tag it again in MC.  Does that work?

I'm guessing something in your file system is causing trouble.

I'd like to reiterate what AwesomeDonkey said, it's probably the new Controlled Folder Access protection in Windows Defender. Several of the users I help on the side have run into read-only issues since Microsoft sprung this change on unsuspecting users. It is an excellent security tool, but the default implementation is too restrictive and was enabled without notice.

Ummm,

The controlled folder access setting is separate from the Defender exclusion list, IIRC. I'm not at my Windows machine at the moment, but I remember that it was easiest to just disable the controlled folder access altogether. Do a search in the Windows settings for "controlled folder" and toggle it off to test.
