Installing MC26
« on: December 09, 2019, 06:30:23 pm »

Edit:  MC26 was released on December 13, 2019.  It's on the Download Page now.

Download it.  You may find a newer build in a thread near the top of the MC26 board.  Look for "JRiver Media Center 26 ..... Available Here".

Install it from the thread near the top of this board, titled something like this:

"JRiver Media Center 26.0.18 -- Available Here"

Restore your MC26 license.  Here's how to find your license and restore it.

MC26 should find your current library and use it.  If not, then back up in your old version and restore the backup in the new version.  Backup is under the File Menu.  MC makes automatic backups as .zip files.

That's it.  You should be up and running in a few minutes.  If you need to ask a question, please post here.

HOW GOOD IS MC26?
It's already a significant improvement over MC25, and there are some very useful features, but we've just begun.  Your MC26 license will work with all future updates of MC26.  Read more on Upgrades.

LICENSE QUESTIONS
How Licensing Works is also explained in the links above.  You can recover your license by using option #2 on our Restore Page.

MC26 isn't out yet, hopefully Friday/tomorrow like Jim said.

In the meantime if you don't want to wait, you can download and install the latest MC25 build and use your MC26 license with that. Personally, I'd advise on waiting until tomorrow when the first build of MC26 hopefully comes.

Downloaded the installer, ran it, it extracts and nothing happens. I have to right click it and use Winrar's option "Extract to <folder name>", open that folder and run the Install.exe in order to install it.

"Unable to register controls. Please run as a power user." when running the first time.
Then I right-click "Run as Administrator" and it opens normally. Allow Media Center on the Windows Firewall and it is good.
I closed it and opened it again, normally without "Run as Administrator" option and it opened fine.  :)

I Can't install a VST plugin on MC26. Would that be a bug?

If the VST plugin is 32-bit you'll have to use the 32-bit version of MC26, it won't work in the 64-bit version of MC26 unless there's a 64-bit VST plugin available (which seem to be kinda rare).

It should happen automatically,  but you ca also back up in MC25 and restore in MC26.

It is a 64 bit version.   It wasn't working initially, even after reinstalling the plug in.   Worked after running into the run as administrator issue.

It is a 64bit plugin and it worked fine on MC25. On MC26, when I click on add VST plugin, nothing happens.

I have checked the box to "show waveform if available" in the display area.

Went through every skin and don't see it.  Am I missing something?

I lost the email I received when I purchased MC26 and I guess that has my registration code I will need before I can install it, yes? How can I get my registration code, having already purchased the upgrade to 26?

I tried installing several times but it crashed my computer several times. I tried both the 64bit and 32bit versions. I'm using Windows 10 and Version 25 has worked beautifully!

Not for me.  Windows 10, 64 bit.  I've tried every skin, clicking on and off the waveform selection, changing alternate and standard text, turning off and on spectrum analyzers, rebooting, exiting and restarting MC26; nothing.  Everything else appears to be working as advertised.

Don't know what else I can do.

You have to re-analyze your audio files to get the waveform working. It has to analyze the files and write the needed value(s) to the Waveform tag. Files not analyzed won't show a waveform.

I had similar problem installing the downloaded Install Key, *.mjr file on my Windows 7 PC.  Notepad kept opening up.  Right click to "Open with: " dialog and select Installer.  That fixed my problem and my MC26 is now registered.

Installed MC26 64-bit version and unable now to play to my Net-Receiver Marantz NR-1710. This worked fine with MC25.
Please advise what has changed in the new version or what has to be done to enable this again.
Also GIZMO doesn't work with MC26: Unable to connect to Server.
Changed back to MC25 and waiting until problems solved.
Thanks.

After installing MC26 I'm getting the message "Warnung: Media Center wurde für ein anderes Betriebssystem installiert." (Warning: MC has been installed for a different operating system).

I have installed the correct 64 bit MC version on my Win 10 machine. Tried it many times: deinstalled everthing (MC25 too), restarted, reinstalled, tried it again as an admin - to no avail.

The only thing that helps, is using the compatibility mode for Win 8 under properties/compatibility. Problem and solution can be reproduced on my machine.

BTW: There is an old thread from February 15, 2011, 01:24:31 pm with that exact message from user Ver.di who upgraded from MC5 to MC16
He found a fix, but only for Win 7, not for Win 10 (Reply #14 on: February 17, 2011, 04:35:22 am):

================================

Fixed it:  ;D

For a normal install, the version of the OS is in the registry here:
HKLM\Software\JRiver\Media Core\Installations\Media Center 16

For Windows 7, you should see:
OS Version: 10

But the installer wrote 7.
I changed it with regedit to 10 and now it works fine"

================================

In my registry the value of OS Version is 1010.

This can happen if you're running an older MC version (e.g. MC16) on a machine that was originally running Windows 7 at the time you installed MC16, then upgraded at some point to Windows 10.

The upgrade from MC25 to MC26 worked like a charm.  Installed and running in just a few minutes.  This is the 64 bit version on Windows 10.

If I recall correctly, this can also happen when doing Windows 10 feature updates, e.g. 1809 to 1903 or 1909.

Installed the Windows 64 bit version 24 hours ago.  This is the smoothest upgrade yet.  Was really no different than a point release upgrade.  And, zero issues with streaming to my DLNA.  I have not had to make any changes in settings.  Very pleased so far.  Great job JRiver team!

As of right now it'll work with a MC26 client connecting to a MC25 server, but as MC26's development progresses this could change. MC26 for Mac will likely be long released before that happens though. So yeah, it should work.

Wow, just installed MC26. (Windows 10 VM on Debian host). It’s fantastic!
After installing MC26, the MC 25 library and even the license automatically took over!
Nothing to do, just click play via WASAPI to my USB DAC on the Linux host.
Thank you for the good job !!

installed MC26 64bit on two computers (Desktop & Notebook). when I try to play a song or album I get the message "there is nothing to play". all the albums and songs are in the correct location (same as MC25). file location inside the program all albums are present, same as with the dedicated hard drive. I am out of ideas.

Hover your mouse over a track, note the location, then find it in Explorer.

Maybe a drive letter changed?

Try restoring an MC25 backup in MC26.

Please, can somebody with Win 10(!) tell me their registry d-word value for Parameter "OS Version" (see below):

================================

For a normal install, the version of the OS is in the registry here:
HKLM\Software\JRiver\Media Core\Installations\Media Center 16

For Windows 7, you should see:
OS Version: 10

================================

FYI see my post above. Thanks!

PS.: The Problem that MC26 can be started in Compatibility mode is still in OS Version MediaCenter260014-x64.exe

For my Windows 10 machine the value for my OS Version in Decimal is 1012, in Hexadecimal it's 3f4.

Why not just delete that OS Version key and reinstall MC? Shouldn't it re-create it with the correct value when re-installing MC?

EDIT: I just tried it and it works. With MC closed I deleted the OS Version key, then reinstall the latest 26.0.14 build of MC26 and it re-created it. If you do this, make sure you do a registry backup (doing a MC backup too wouldn't be a bad idea either) first. Don't use compatibility mode like Hendrik pointed out below, it's only going to cause issues if you do.

You should not use compatibility mode for MC, it's designed to run natively on all Windows versions.

When you run in compat mode, windows lies about which version it is.

@Hendrik
I understand that and it's exactly my opinion. But what can you do, when MC 26 only works in compatibility mode?

@Awesome Donkey
Bingo! That worked, as I expected. The installation program should overwrite these registry entries with the correct values though!!

Thank you for your support!

Since Version 24, something in my Dell notebook is preventing me from install JRiver. It happened with Version 25 and now with 26. My notebook is 64 bits, and I have tried both 32 and 64.
It starts the process, unziping the files. Than asking permission to make changes in my Windows. After that it simply interrupt the process, disappearing.
Please help me on that.

This is very likely caused by antivirus/antimalware software.

I don't work for JRiver... I help keep the forums safe from "male enhancements" and other sources of sketchy pharmaceuticals.

This is very likely caused by antivirus/antimalware software.

I had  similar problem. It was caused by Ashampoo Uninstaller which tracks and catalogs program installations. Once I disabled that MC installed fine.

Having the same problem. No matter if i try to install it as administrator or not or use the 32 or 64 bit version it keeps crashing my laptop. Version 25 works without a problem.

Everything installed good (so far) on my Win10 64bit (upgrading from MC25). I still have MC25 on PC, is it safe to uninstall?
