Media 25 shuts down all the time
« on: April 27, 2020, 11:06:05 am »

I have a very irritating problem.
My media center shuts down after about 20 min.
And it has been doing this for quite a while. In the middle of playing music, suddenly a break in the stream about 2sec and after another 5 sec, Mediacenter shuts down. Nothing else happens and I can restart it again (it tells me that it has been shut down wrongly) and everything is ok. until another 20 min has gone, and mediacenter shuts down in exactly the same way again and it continues to do this all the time.

Check the thread called "Weird Problems" in my signature.  Don't skip the antivirus thread linked there.

The first thing to try is to turn off Auto Import in the background: "Options > Library & Folders > Auto-import > Run auto-import in background"
See if the problem goes away.

If that doesn't work, tell us more about your environment.
You are running the 32bit version of last version MC25, MC25.0.115, correct?
You are running Convolution and 32bit VSTs?
It is running on a Windows 10 installation you built last October?
You are playing directly from your music PC to an output device, with no DLNA or Streamer involved?
Is your music on an external drive such as a NAS or a USB drive?

Has this problem been happening since you switched to Windows 10?

Create a log file with the crash in it.
Tell us what file was playing when it crashed.

JimH
I looked through that thread, and I have disabled Windows Defender and have no other Virus programs. It is a dedicated music PC with only the things installed necessary for JRiver (and cclenear)

RoderickGI
Auto Import in background is now stopped, but the problem remains.

It is MC25.0.114 is that a problem?
You are running Convolution and 32bit VSTs?  Yes
It is running on a Windows 10 installation you built last October? I believe it is an older win 10 installation, but I am not sure. It has been updated as per win updates.
You are playing directly from your music PC to an output device, with no DLNA or Streamer involve Yes

NAS and USB harddsik. Same problem.

The problem is pretty recent and was not there at the beginning.
It doesenīt matter what file I play, only that JRiver has been playing a certain amount of time apparently.

You can't just disable Windows Defender.  You must configure it.

Try without Convolution.

It's possible you have a hardware problem.

What I meant was Windows Defender FIREWALL was disabled.

Apparently the problem has vanished as I was able today to listen for more than half an hour without JRiver shutting down.
Didnīt make any changes today, just wanted to listen to some music ?

Auto Import is still turned off though, correct?

If so, and the problem has indeed gone, then maybe the first test had something else going on.

Keep listening to music and see if the problem happens again, with Auto Import off.

I was having the same issue with MC25 constantly shutting down. I would get a message stating not shut down correctly and it was suggested I reinstall MC25. Now that my hard drive crashed and has been replaced and I am attempting to reinstall but getting nowhere. I did restore my license and have attempted to get it up and running but cannot. I went back thru instructions and am completely lost. I am not very proficient with my laptop and have asked my son-in-law to attempt to help this weekend as I have given up. I am frustrated that it is so difficult to install. Are there step by step instructions I could follow as I really like it when it is working. I use it for music only, playing my itunes library. Thanks for anything that helps.

It's not very complicated.

Download the correct version (MC25 if that's what you have -- see Old Versions on the wiki).

Restore your license if necessary.

Ask Google if you have a question, adding JRiver.

Post details here of what you have done and what happens.

I have downloaded MC25 64 bit, restored the license, I have a temporary Install key. Now if I try and open MC25 it just opens itunes.

Do you have a 64 bit OS?  If not, try the 32 bit version.

How are you trying to start MC25 when it opens iTunes?  If you're clicking on a media file in Windows Explorer and it happens, that is a file association problem.

Please be patient, It's hard to be more specific when you are a novice computer user. I had to replace the hard drive and lost MC25. I requested an install key and downloaded "Media Center25 Windows 472216 2KB in size, 64bit" At some point I was asked how I wanted to open this file and I selected iTunes. (I only use JRiver MC for music playback of my iTunes library)
After download I double click "Media Center25 Windows 472216 2KB" and iTunes opens and not the MC. I don't recall this problem on the original install. I try and delete and start over and the same thing occurs though I do not get asked how to open file. I don't recall the choice of 32 or 64 bit on the original install but perhaps have forgotten that part, my O/S is 64.
I am really lost at this point and could use any help available. I did have to pay $50 to restore my iTunes library as I did not have it backed up.
I did have MC25 up and running on windows10 and it was fantastic other than I seemed to be getting kicked off with a msg that I did not shut down properly. I was hoping that this reinstall would fix that.
I hope this makes sense as obviously, I am struggling a bit. I am hoping for suggestions today then tomorrow I will have my son and law who is much more proficient to read through and attemp reinstall.

What version of Windows are you using?

The downloaded file for Windows has an exe extension.  If you double click on it, the OS should run it.

It almost sounds like you're trying to install or run a Windows version on a Mac or vice versa.

Getting there, It's there somewhere, if I right-click on my recent download: Media Center25 Windows-47226, "play" I briefly saw the MC25. It seemed to disappear and when I try again right-click with "play or open" I just get iTunes file.
Any idea what I may have done wrong, am I just missing a step?

That's a license file, not the Media Center 25 app. You can get the final Media Center 25 build from here: https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,123295.0.html

Jim, I went to WIKI page for old versions MC25 for Windows10, double click, check download file and see:
Media Center25 Windows-47226    That's really as far as I got, I'm not sure what to do here, if I right-click along with open or play I go to iTunes though I did see MC25 briefly, I can not get it back. Am I missing a step?

Awesome Donkey: Thx for jumping in, I follow this and click on Download 64-bit build, it flashes but does not download.

Awesome Donkey, When I double click:https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,123295.0.html  It flashes but nothing downloads. What I don't get is you tell me that what I have downloaded is a license file and not the MC25 app but I did go to "older versions on WIKI page and double click Windows 64 or 32 bit MC25. Am I missing a step?
I will have some assistance this afternoon that should help but I'd love to give him some direction. I have spent many hours on this. Maybe the download is blocked by anti-virus or something?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, I have been without my music files for a month.

Randy, you are right. The MC25 download link is not working due to a recent change in Chrome and other browsers (HTTPS requirement).
Please click here to download:

https://files.jriver.com/mediacenter/channels/v25/latest/MediaCenter250115-x64.exe

Then click on the downloaded file to install it. After install, you'll have to import the license file. Since you seem to have associated it with iTunes, it's possible that it doesn't work. Let us know if that's the case and we'll help you fix it.

(@Donkey: at least on chrome, the 301 redirect to HTTPS is being treated as an unwanted popup/redirect and is blocked. Not sure if you can do anything about it, best is to change the download links to https)

Zybex, Thank you for your reply regarding the problem of reinstalling MC25. I did get around it somehow after many different attempts and am not even sure now how I did it. I am admittingly very bad with this stuff but am desperate to have my music back. I have reinstalled it again but am not sure about how to "import the license file" or if I need to at this point. I did see a msg that the license was installed ok.
Right now, I can open MC25 and see my music files but not my "player" (Cambridge Audio NP30) so I am very close.
I wonder if I should delete everything and try again as the download link I was directed to was not working. Just to be clear I can open MC25 and see my 11k files, I can then play music on my laptop but MC25 no longer sees my Network Player so I cannot play on the home stereo. Hope this makes sense to you guys. If it would help at all I would gladly screen share or anything recommended at any time.
Any direction would be greatly appreciated!

You have to enable and configure DLNA on Settings->Media Network.
DLNA is not my specialty, others here may be able to help on that.

I just hope I can give him a bit of direction as he is not really familiar with this set up. To be clear JRiver was working fine and I loved it. I had a hard drive crash on my laptop which I use mainly for my music files on iTunes and my JRiver App. I am enquiring with Cambridge Audio as well but it was working great other than I would get kicked off at times and have to reload. Now I open JRiver and do not see my player but do see my playlist, I can use my player for internet radio but not my library. Open to any suggestions. Thx

Wait, so we're clear here you do have a backup of the library AND a backup of all music files from your crashed hard drive, right? And if you do you restored both backups, correct? If you only restored a library backup that won't include your music files, as Media Center doesn't back those up (as that's the user's responsibility to setup and maintain the backing up of important files).

If this doesn't apply to you have you have a library backup and your music files, then please ignore this part. However if you (or anyone else reading this) don't have either a library backup or your music files you might be out of luck unless you're able to recover them off the crashed hard drive somehow. If you can't and you have no library backup or a backup of your music files and no way of recovering any of it, you'd have to start over from scratch unfortunately. The lesson there is to never store any files you want to keep on the main hard drive the operating system is stored on. Storing them on an external hard drive or NAS along with a cloud backup service would help (but not totally prevent) loss of data in case of a hard drive failure. Following the 3-2-1 backup rule is a good place to start in regards to data backups.

Awesome Donky, You are correct I did not have a proper backup and lost my iTunes then installed an App to recover my iTunes file. That was successful and I do now see my tunes on the JRiver app but not my player. Do you think it has something to do with DLNA setup as suggested? I hope I am clear enough on this, my lack of knowledge on this makes it tough but I appreciate any help in getting my music back. Once successful I will certainly back up properly.

Is this found on the JRiver App, my Network Player or I assume on the laptop(I just couldn't find Media Network or anything regarding DLNA)?

Anyone?

If Options->MediaNetwork is not there, you may have to check Options->Features->MediaNetwork first.
