« on: April 11, 2003, 12:16:13 pm »

Media Center 9.0.148 is available.

Some things may not work.

ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/MediaCenter90148.exe

History:
1. Fixed: Media Center now needs less time to connect to streaming Windows Media Stations.
2. Fixed: Media Center was not handling previous parser error correctly.
3. Fixed: OptionsList skin item for mega-me skins is back.
4. Fixed: The capability of setting recording video size was inadvertently lost, so everything (video and still picture) is recorded in 320 x 240.
5. Changed: Resource warning message which was coming up during install will now come up only on Win 98 and below.
6. Fixed: Media Center would crash if exited from mini-me mode.
7. Fixed: Some menu items were incorrectly disabled if MC was connected to Media Server.
8. Fixed: Update CD Info from YADB did not work with "Enable cd look up" disabled.
9. Fixed: Submit CD Info to YADB  did not work with "Enable cd look up" disabled.
10. Fixed: CD Labeler and Media Editor would not start on some computers.
11. Fixed: On the fly encoding to Tivo could truncate a small amount of music at the end.

I have to share...
One of the things that makes Media Center such an amazing product is the extent that you seek to make it better; to meet the needs of the consumer.  To think... in a world of Microsofts, a smaller company can and does show a desire for quality and answering even the most "Tenderfoot" of complaints promptly...is incredible.  You will do well.

My two issues were resolved in the 3 builds that were released in the last two days, and accordingly MC9 moves to the top of my recommended list.

I was more than willing to pay $35.  Not for perfection persay, but for the "hope" of perfection in a product made by a company that listens to its consumers in order to make its product the best.

I've got to say that as a almost exclusively GNU/Linux user, I am more than happy to pay for Media Center - it's the only app the runs on my media system.

JRiver has it right - the team's commitment to product and customers is outstanding.  These qualities make people feel good about the software they purchase.
You guys are a great example of what can be achieved in the space beween microsoft.com and freshmeat.net.

MC9 continues to blow away my expectations.

Hi Matt,

I successfully reinstalled by sound card driver and my volume control worked  for release 138.  When I subsequently updated MC, the volume bar does not work again.

Is there a way to fix this very annoying problem.

I must add my agreement here.  This has been the most awesome Beta testing experience I have ever had with any type of software.  You folks are wonderful as well as talented and skilled.  And YES, I have actually enjoyed folking over my hard earned cash for this product . . . which in this day & age is rare, not much is really worth what you pay for it. This product IS Well worth It!     ;)
Thank you!

p.s. can't wait to start testing MC10     LOL

Normally, when reading such praises for the dev team, I would just say to myself, "I won't post, others have already said what I would have said anyway."

Part of that is still true, since others have indeed covered the aspects of this beta test that have been truly positive, but I have decided to post anyway.  The reason is that we all tend to complain when we experience a problem, even when others have already brought that problem to the attention of the dev team.  So I figured it was only fair to have the same attitude in the opposite direction.

This has been one of the most responsive beta tests I have been involved in.  I'm one of those who paid for MC9 early on, and I am happily awaiting the final release.

For my part, what I liked the most is that I always got a sense of honesty from the devs.  When they had not figured out how to fix a problem, they said so.  When they were not sure if a problem had been fixed, they said so.  It was very refreshing.

Thanks for everything!

Agreed. I use MC every day (almost all day) at work, and at home. The constantly available updates are always fun to install because... well you never know what new and cool fix or improvement has been made! I'm sure being small and competative has everything to do with it, but large or small, when a company is honest and responsive, the revenues will pour in from happy customers!

Hi.  I've tried to dowload Media Center 9.+ on my desktop (I had 9.0 working).  When I click on Media Center, it comes up, but disappears quickly. I can't get it to stay on.  Anyone have an idea?

Bugs (CD burning woes in last few builds):
1. Creating a data CD burn list of 100+ tracks takes MC about 40 secs of 'think time' before it displays the data CD burn list.  This used to be almost instantaneous.  It's like MC's CD burner is calculating MD5 signatures for every track you are adding...lots of CPU busy activity!!

Query:
What's changed lately in CD burning to cause such high CPU usage during a simple add/create data CD burn list?  The new Analyzing Devices logic seems to be alot better (less annoying...more automatic/faster).

When I access the tools menu, then click on Options, I recieve the error message Invalid temporary directory name. Would this be a bug, as it has been happening on the last few builds.

Thanks

When I attempt to play any WMA file I get the following Error dialog: "Playback Engine: Media Jukebox is unable to acquire license for this file. Windows Media Error: 0x80070005." This error only occurs when trying to play these files from the server on another computer. In recent prior versions I got a different error code, but the same behavior.

Despite some theories that this is linked to DRM being activated in the WMA files, this does not appear to be the case for a number of reasons: (i) Media Center has no problem playing the files on any PC when they are loaded off the LAN, i.e. not streamed using the server; (ii) I have no problem playing them with Windows Media Player, Musicmatch Jukebox, Media Jukebox and even prior versions of the Media Center Server (e.g. prior to 9.0.130); and (iii) it is my strong recollection that when these files were ripped, DRM was turned off.

I believe this is a bug in how the Media Center client/server system handles playing WMA files.

If I can provide any further useful information, please send me a private message.

I posted on this several versions ago and with .147, I'm having problems with WMA format files ("The source filter for this file could not be loaded.", I recently installed WMP 9.00.00.2980.  Is there something I can do to clear up this WMA issues?

I can duplicate this every time using "BBC radio 5 live" in the Web Media section of MC9.

SORTING
--- No problems with columns that are totally populated eg Name, Album etc. It sorts these quickly and accurately both in ascending and descending sequence. For columns that are not totally populated eg comments, notes etc, it not only takes a long time to complete, but there is no accuracy in the result. It should, for an ascending sort for instance, place all the blank fields first, but this does'nt happen. Non-blank fields seem to be anywhere up and down the column. This has been like this for ages.

New Bug:

Renaming files from properties inserts a couple of extra characters around the Artist name. For instance:

Artist: Manu Chao
Name: Mama Call

ends up as:

~!%!~Manu Chao~!%!~ - Mama Call.mp3

New - Date Opened: 12/04/2003  Priority: High

I installed 148 then set the encoder to MP3 Encoder VBR, set quality to custom and set the custom parameters to --alt-preset standard.

I then put in the new Fleetwood Mac CD that I managed to get 2 days early and filled in the entries for YADB. I then clicked on the rip button. I went to Options and set the copy mode to digital secure then started to rip. MC9 came up with a message to say that the LAME encoder was not installed and asked if I wanted to download it. Whilst it was downloading LAME it also kept on coming up with a message box saying error accessing ripper (or something similar). This message box only had an OK button on it and kept on coming up every time I pressed OK on it.  The only way to break out of the loop was to click on Cancel on the CD Rip dialog. Once the plugin was installed ripping worked successfully. The problem only occurred on the first rip after an install of MC9.

MC9 should wait to start the ripping process until the encoder plugin is installed. Unfortunately it doesn't at the moment.

Making changes to properties using the properties editor and then using a right-clicking option on the files (like clean file or paste cover art) is causing MC to discard all the changes that were made. I have to left-click somewhere else if i want the changes to be saved.

If i change the column sorting directly on a main category (Playing Now, Media Library, ...) and then i hit Refresh (or F5) before going to another tree node, the sort returns to it's previous state. (but the columns' order is saved correctly).

Burn bug.

Just burned 10 audio cd's - in two cases MC just stalled somewhere in the process, froze, media core error and crashed.

The other 8 went fine, but still a 20 % error rate, at least for those 10 cd's.

For the last few builds scrolling through a list of files (whether huge or only just big enough to warrant scrolling) has become incredibly slow on the list refresh rate.  This used to be as smooth as a very smooth thing.

I am sure that following problems will be resolved in one of the next builds, keep the good up:

1) Thumbnail Navigation:
  1. Navigation does not work properly when more than 2 columns
are displayed, can not select columns beyond the 2nd column.

  2. Image Range Selection with shift+cursor does not update the
image preview window with last selected thumbnail during
     selection process.

  3. Image Range Selection with shift+cursor until the end of the
directory list removes the selection, selection has to be done
     again.

  4. Image range selection with mouse or shift+cursor and following
deletion of the selected range does not end up in highlighting
     the next possible image.

3) Memory Leak when analyzing large amount of files
Running out of virtual memory when selecting many files
to analyze (about6000). After about 300-400 files were
  analyzed successfully, Media Center quits/crashes.
  Behavour is reproducable.

4) Renaming TV Station is cumbersome
After scanning for available TV Channels it is very
cumbersome to rename them to the 'real' channel name.
The channel switching window does not allow to rename
and the options window does not allow to switch channels.

5) My Computer: Displaying movie clips is quite slow
Generating thumbnails of images is very fast, mp3 is fast,
movie files (rm, avi, mpeg) are pretty slow.

Still unable to move folders between drives.

Cerebus, just so you'll know, this is a Windows limitation, not an MC limitation.  Of course, this is assuming they are using Windows' ::MoveFile() method.  I could paste in the SDK's function description, but I don't think it would survive HTML, i.e., be very readable.

They would have to add a lot of logic to create the directories first before moving the files, and at this stage of the game, I doubt that is going to happen.  :)

There are two very small but annoying problems:

1 - Whenever I close MC9, I get an error message saying that Media JUKEBOX has caused an error in an unknown module and will be shut down. Every time for the last two or three builds. It's not really a problem because I'm closing it anyway but it's annoying because it's there and makes no sense.

2 - Under "CD, handhelds ..." in the left tree, there are my two USB hard drives that must be classed as "Removable" by Windows in order to maintain the correct drive letter. As they're not REALLY removable, is there any way to remove them from that branch of that tree? (Sometimes only one shows up) As they both are ALSO under "My Computer", I don't really need them in both places. I've tried deleting but to no avail.

BTW, if anyone is interested, after a clean reinstall of my OS, I now have the ability to rip & convert in any format I wish. I suspected it was my problem all along.

During An Auto Rip

Rip Of An Unknown CD (I Entered Data To YADB) For Heart - Desire Walks On. The CD Riped And I Went To The Next Unknown CD "Donna Summer - Greatest Hits" and entered The Data For That CD.

When That CD Was Done Ripping And MC9 Was Getting Coverart What Came Up Was Getting Coverart For "Heart - Desire Walks On"

It never Did Find Coverart For Each CD

So I Went Back And Did It Manualy And MC9 Did Find Coverart For Dona Summer (A Loose Hit)

So it seems MC9 is Not Finding Coverart For Each CD As It Is Being Auto Ripped.

It Is Reproducable

Bug in burning progress dialoque:

While burning in the burning progress window it
says: "burning/writing Rio Funk (song title)"

It keeps saying that same top title of the playlist, even though the burning has progressed longer to another track.

Still Open:
Can't seem to create a View Scheme that will show a CD of mp3's in the tree by Volume Name/Location. Files on hard drives show correctly under this scheme but the CDs do not show the folders in the left pane tree at all. The correct path is shown in the database.

New:
MC is crashing when clicking "Tools" at the bottom of the Properties panel when on the Playlist page.

I upgraded from 9.0.137 to 9.0148 and now I can't play any mp3 file.
I get an error message:
"There was an error starting playback.
Make sure that your system has a valid sound playback device and that it is properly configured in Media Jukebox's playback options.
(double check the output mode, output device and output bitdepth)".

I set my playback options to the same as in the previous versions and checked with winamp settings that work.

The mode is Direct Sound.
The device is Primary Sound Driver.
I tried changing those settings but no option works for me.

SHOWSTOPPER: MC9 will no longer play or import video files with WMP 6.4. If I try to import an AVI, ASF or MPG, it comes in as Media Type: Data and won't play. If I try to play an MPG I imported with a previous build, it says

-------------------------------------
Cannot determine the version of Microsoft Media Player.
Microsoft Media Player 6.0 or above must be installed prior
play the file you selected. (sic)

Do you want to download and install the latest version of the player?
Download                                      Exit
-------------------------------------

clicking Exit just makes the dialog reappear, probably because I have continuous play turned on. The only thing I can do is close MC, which gives App Error

The instruction at "0x004227c0" referenced memory at "0x0000c5f0"

Bugs for Media Center 9.0.148 Beta

  • Image List View : This doesn't select files correctly. If you select one file, then hold control to select a few more, that works. If you hold down shift and select a range, that works as well. But when holding down Control + Shift to add a range of files to the currently selected files, all of the currently selected files become unselected.

  • I've pinpointed the cause of the following problem I'm having.
The cause of this is that, while Media Server is running (and requiring authentication?) any site that is listed in my hosts file to go to localhost (a trick that keeps various ad sites from bombarding me with ads - it doesn't stop popups, but it at least keeps one popup from spawning others or me having to actually see the ad), when IE tries to load one of those sites, I get prompted for a username and password. After removing the hosts file, this problem goes away. Now, obviously I'd prefer to leave my hosts file as it is...

The original bug report on this
I've just started using Media Server, and I have it set to require a username and password to access.

Ever since I started using it, IE asks me for authentication for various sites.

Like if I go to msn.com, I get prompted for a username and password for global.msads.net & di.image.eshop.msn.com.

If I shut media server down, this problem goes away.

  • At work, where I'm accessing my media server, MC prompts me for a username and password for our proxy server, and then again for the media server. It keeps trying to use my media server login credentials for our proxy server. Whenever I try to download any plugin or anything, it doesn't do this.

Hi.  I've tried to dowload Media Center 9.+ on my desktop (I had 9.0 working).  When I click on Media Center, it comes up, but disappears quickly. I can't get it to stay on.  Anyone have an idea?

This happened to me also, when I installed 9.1.145.  A simple reboot fixed the problem.  I am on Windows XP.

NOTE: The installer doesn't direct the user to reboot, but the latest betas appear to require it, at least on some machines.
