Connection Failure Using Access Key [Solved]

Hi,
A couple of years ago Gizmo was working fine for audio on my Android phone with my W10 laptop as the server, then it stopped connecting on the LAN and I could not fix it and gave up. In the last year my config has changed to, in the office, a new router and W10 desktop as the server and upstairs the laptop as the client which is working great, love your software.
I am now trying to resurrect Gizmo. I have removed and reinstalled Gizmo on the phone, input the access key but it will not connect by LAN or internet, although I'm not fussed about internet connection at present. I assume it is a firewall issue and I am trying to set a rule to allow Gizmo through the firewall in my Kaspersky security software but so far failed. Should I expect to see Gizmo listed in the schedule of app network rules (attached)? Thanks.

Hello again, sorry for the delay in reply but being of an age that when at school we used sliderules because there were no calculators I thought I would get a Microsoft qualified network engineer in to help with this problem. He has just left scratching his head. He assures me ports 52199, 52100 and 52200 are open both internally and externally. He managed to get access to the JRiver DLNA device from his laptop internally as I can on mine. He also downloaded Gizmo onto his Android phone and logged in first time but my LG G5SE phone Android version 7.0 still won't log in. We cleared the Gizmo data and cache, forced a stop and uninstalled Gizmo, rebooted the phone, reinstalled Gizmo but to no avail. Gizmo attempts connections internally and externally 10 times and then reports there was a problem connecting to the server even though wifi is fine. Have you any advise how I can get Gizmo to connect to my JRiver DLNA server. We are at a loss to understand the problem.  ?

It's probably a problem with your phone then.  That's unusual.

Try another Android device if you have one.

Are you entering the Access Key on your phone?  You can generate a new one on the server.

By any chance do you have a mobile VPN or Virus protection/firewall on your phone? I.E. Bitdefender Mobile, NordVPN, or another?

Dear JimH,
As I mentioned the network engineer downloaded Gizmo onto his Android phone and logged in first time by entering the access key.
I have tried generating a new access key on the server and logging in to Gizmo with that but no joy. I have tried logging in to Gizmo using my internal address 192.168.1.?:52199 but no joy.

Dear avpman,
I have a licensed Kaspersky Internet Security on my phone, I do not use a VPN and to my knowledge Android Kaspersky Internet Security does not use a firewall.

I entered the usrename and password correctly and got the holding window "looking up access key" but much to my disappointment Gizmo went into its ten attempts to connect to the server both internally and externally using the correct addresses.

I chose my phone because it is one of the best for audio out there, an LG G5SE with the optional 32bit B&O DAC and do not wish to change it.
If I or you cannot get Gizmo to work I may have to opt for the nuclear option, suggested in some of the audiophile groups I follow, and ditch JRiver, which I love and have bought every update since Media Centre 16 back in 2011, for something like Roon which gets recommended in these groups.
Please help, I do not want to abandon my investment in JRiver.

I wouldn't dump MC just yet. Since your network engineer got it to work on his phone, it has to be something on your phone. PM me if you would like for me to try and help from my phone. Also, for testing, I wouldn't just "allow" programs in Kaspersky as much as I would remove it completely. You can always re-install it and any other manuf provided protection. I had a similar problem with Bitdefender blocking access to one of my devices from my PC. Drove me crazy for days. I thought I had allowed everything, but it took removing BD to narrow down the problem.

Kaspersky could easily be the problem and, as avpman says, uninstalling it is the only true test.

I see both of you are suggesting I uninstall Kaspersky. I take it as my MC client on my laptop works fine accessing my MC server on my PC you mean uninstall Kaspersky from my phone and test Gizmo?

I have just stripped all Kaspersky apps off the phone after forcing stop and clearing data and cache, uninstalled Gizmo, rebooted, reinstalled Gizmo from PlayStore, rebooted, opened Gizmo and entered the access key to receive the error message "There was a problem connecting to the server". No 10 attempts to connect as there used to be. I tried resetting my server access key but same response.
On the server when I use the option to "test this connection to the server" I get the response attached.

Found something interesting.
I thought I would use "Add or configure DLNA servers" in Media Network options to remove the existing DLNA server and replace it to see what happens. I removed the one DLNA server listed and added an "Audiophile 24 bit DAC" profile DLNA server as the one I removed was and called it "JRiver DLNA Server". I the went to Network in File Explorer to find three DLNA devices all with the same model number and the same device webpage. Is this normal. See attachment.

I removed your attachment since it had your access key and login displayed.
I tried the access key.  It got the address but wouldn't connect so the server isn't visible from outside your LAN.

Gizmo uses Library Server, not DLNA.  I think your port forwarding on your router isn't right.

The test from your server when you click on the Access Key in MC's options for Media Network will tell you if your IP address will work from outside.

Here is a screenshot of the of the router's port forwarding page clearly showing that port forwarding is enabled for both external and internal hosts on external and internal ports 52199 with protocol TCP.

Great news, my network engineer discovered that even though the router page said 52199 was open internally and externally it was not. He has sorted it and I am now able to use Gizmo on my phone. He used this website which test your ports https://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/
Sadly I wonder why I bothered as in Gizmo's audio quality the best choice is "high" at 320kbps, high to me is 3200kbps. I don't do mp3 but hey it is a useful remote.

You could use any remote now that the port is open.  Panel, JRemote2, etc.

JRemote2's local playback converts to mp3.

MO 4Media is a great Android remote that will let you disable conversion. The search feature works very well too, and it will let you view album extras such as booklets.

Certainly like the interface of MO 4Media and it's options.
Currently using Gizmo as display on my HTPC, but using mconnect as remote, as they have integrated Qobuz and Tidal. And mconnect can also play everything in hi-res.
So Goberre has some home work to do  :D

It works for specific formats like FLAC, MP3, M4A AAC, Ogg Vorbis and ALAC so there's no local conversion to MP3 - just make sure in your MC server's Options > Media Network has the audio conversion set to either Don't convert audio or Convert audio if necessary. Gapless audio playback even works with FLAC this way. ;)

That's good to know. I even have "Use native audio format" selected. But right under that the "Audio quality" setting has three options - Low (64 Kbps), Medium (128 Kbps), and High (320 Kbps). A more intuitive layout would be to remove the "Use native audio format" switch and add it as a fourth option to the Audio quality list. And while he's tweaking the layout, he could change it from Kbps to kb/s, as K is correctly used as the abbreviation for Kelvin, not for kilo.

That's just, like, your opinion man  ;D

SI Units for computing are notoriously badly enforced. If you wanted to use proper SI units you would need to use the binary KiB/MiB/etc prefixes, which no one really likes.
The K has been used in computing since the start, and since there's no context overlap with temperatures no one really confuses it with Kelvin. Same thing with "m" for both metre and minutes.

Historically, the case of the K doesn't matter as much as the case of the B:
KB = Kilobyte
Kb or kb = Kilobit
KBps or KB/s = Kilobytes per second
Kbps or kbps or kb/s or Kb/s = Kilobits per second

I think we could use the LoC/s which is much more standartized (Libraries of Congress per second).

Neither is kilo, it's a prefix not a unit. Whether it's capitalized or not depends only on context and grammar. Nanotechnology in caps at the start of a sentence, nanometers in the middle.

kilo is an official multiple, see paragraph 4.3 of NIST. (as this is an US site).

I didn't say it was not official. I said it's a "prefix", not a "unit". As such, the case is not fixed, it depends on where/how the full prefixed word is used.

Correct (missed that), to be fully and completely off topic, binary values should (IEC guidelines) be written like:
KiB (kibi Byte),
MiB (mibi Byte),
GiB (gibi Byte).

As k indicates 1000 and Ki indicates 1024.
While spitting this out, I am glad that I changed roles and no longer have to follow these ISO 17025 guidelines.

These options have no influence on JRemote audio streaming, the "native" option in JRemote is all that controls that.

The options apply to clients that we have no control over, eg. DLNA.
