Worse and more serious news.

When I try to play a CD I get a warning that I'm missing ASPI files.  I accept the download, it says its successful and reboot and when I restart MC I get the same message except this time when I accept the download it fails.

Wasn't sure if the ASPI install wasn't going right so I download the latest and greatest ASPI file and I still get that darned "Install ASPI" screen.  :)

Same with me.  It asks me to download the latest ASPI.  I accept and it dowloads and says it installed properly.  When I try to play a CD it asks me to dowload it again...and it fails to install.

:'( I have an Artec WRR-4048 in a 850 AMD runing Windows ME and my writer worked but crashed at the end and also recorded out of sequence in ver 9.0.84 but then it disappeared in ver 9.0.89 and is simply only recognised as a CD-rom not a writer so for the mo I am moving files into a back-up directory then using nero to burn.

Where has my burner gone please???

Also I have mention this B4 but can you get MC 9 to keep previous screens the same i have 3000 songs and when looking through for songs to burn for compilation CD's everytime I look in the burner screen to see how much time I have left when I return to the libary it has returned to the Top of the list every time.  I am sorry to winge but it seems to be such a simple funtion that NEEDS to be there yet it is'nt.

Apart from  that i still love the interface and I am sure it will be the greatist again once all the bugs are gone but in the mean time please fix me burner?? ?

As with TimB, I noticed after using the ASPI check utility that my ASPI wasn't the latest version.  I have upgraded to the latest 4.7 version, have done all the reboots (even the recommended reboot after restarting Media Center) still not burner..and I still get the ASPI upgrade error after inserting a CD to play. :'(

For the Win98 users, I think it's a simple fix. Please look for a file called "wnaspi32.dll" in your MJ program directory and rename or delete it if it's there (exit MJ first). Then see if your problems are gone.

Thanks!

Works!  Thanks JohnT.  I always suspect Win98 issues first. :)

If I can ask how is XP different in this issue, does it not look first to the directory you're running the app from for the .dll?

Creating a data CD.

Drag and drop a directory with 337 files in it to the CD.

Everything went fine until the end when MC9.89 crashed with a buffer overrun.

The resulting disc is reading but where there was one level of directories in the source directory, they're now nested inside each other in the destination CD with the files that were formally at the root level in the folder at the lowest level of the nesting.

Oh and the System Info button doesn't seem to list my F: CD/RW drive as a burner even tho' MC9 itself does.   Just FYI.

Working.
Anyhow it makes buffer underrun protection start 3 or 4 times during burning, so I reverted to external aspi.
The audio CD was burned OK and also with cross-fade between tracks.

:D Media Center is great, thanks & happy Christmas to you all!!

If I can ask how is XP different in this issue, does it not look first to the directory you're running the app from for the .dll?

-=Tim=-

XP can use a "pseudo" aspi layer that we provide with the local wnaspi32.dll file. Win98/SE has to use a "real" aspi layer which is provided with those OS's (in the windows/system dir). The wnaspi32.dll file is not supposed to be in the MJ directory on win98/se installations, but a bug crept into the .89 release in that respect.

It doesn't work. MC displays:

Logical unit is in process of becoming ready

Lead-in information seems written though.

That runs fine with Nero, the same burner and the same media.

It is the same problem with both the native win2K aspi driver and Adaptec aspi driver.

Well, I had to move my TDK 4800B to a FireWire enclosure and now I can neither rip nor burn.

On a burn, I get:
"Can't start the write"
"Failed to read track info from CD"

On a rip I get:
"Open drive failed.  Parameter is out of range"
"Read track failed.  Drive is not opened"

The drive worked fine attached to an IDE controller.
Both EAC and NERO can burn and rip from the drive in the FireWire enclosure with no problems.

Okay just burned my first audio CD with MC 9.0.88.

Everything seems good.  Computer is a Toshiba Tecra 9100.  With a Matshita UJDA720 DVD/CD-R drive.  This is the one that ships with the laptop.

So I finally tried to burn a CD now that DSP settings have been included. A couple of observations.

1. First a general CD-burning bug. If I move tracks around in the list before burning, MC shows doubles of that track. If I hit refresh, then it displays the names correctly.

2. I had one file in my list that hadn't been analysed. MC brought up the Analyze Audio box, and I let it do its thing, and then nothing happened. Shouldn't MC detect that analysis is finished and move on to burning? I had to hit Start again to get it to actually burn.

3. It may just be me, but Replay Gain on the CD doesn't appear to be right. There are a couple of songs that are noticably quieter than the rest. I'm going to run a test using various files at opposite ends of the replay gain spectrum and see how it turns out.

I just noticed this last night about the CD I burned.

I have playback settings set to gapless. The resulting CD appears to have cut off the beginnings and endings of some songs by about a second.

Also, a track that was only 2:45 in length, wound up taking a lot more on the CD. There's a big section of silence after that song.

Scratch that part about the additional silence after the track, that was my fault. I accidentally used a track that had about a minute of silence after it. The rest of the problems I reported are still true, though.

Thanks for the testing Doof. I'll look into the problems you observed. I just converted the writer over to Unicode, killed a few bugs from the latest builds, and I'm still trying to get Firewire drives to work (not to mention Philips drives). Hopefully soon...

My TDK4800B is now working via Firewire for both read and write and both audio and data!  Still some bugs to work out in general, but it's working at least as well as it was when it was directly connected to the IDE controller.

Thanks John!

Thanks for the report (and patience!) Remy. I've got your other bug reports on the list for fixing.

I wonder if JGourd's Firewire setup is working??

OK, any 'quick fixes' for Windows ME?  MC doesn't recognize the files on the CD player/writer (just get the 'Please Select file(s) to play' message {and no files visible to select}.  Now that I look at my system info (below) I'm showing a 'ASPI for Win32 (95/NT) DLL'.  Is that right?  If not - how do i remove?

Sweet.

I have given up on using Media Center to burn CD's - was getting way to many coasters. Several beta release in a row failed when it came to burning. I realize these are beta releases but I'm not willing to create anymore coasters at my expense and I can't go back to 8.

I create a playlist (M3U) and burn the playlist with Nero - works every time. Just drag and drop the playlist in Nero Express. I use Media Center for everything else, CD labels etc,

Can't get MC9 to detect my Iomega 16x10x40 CD Writer. Have installed the latest ASPI, rebooted, but nothing shows up.

Any ideas?

I'm not sure why your Iomega isn't recognized, but try a build greater than 9.0.102. There has been a fix for a problem where some Sanyo and Smart & Friendly drives weren't getting recognized so it may help you also.

If not, let me know if yours is the internal or external version of the Iomega. If you have a model number that might be helpful, I think these are all the model numbers for Iomega 16x10x40 drives:
CDRW6400INT
CDRW6400INT-A
CDRW6400INT-B
CDRW6402EXT-B

You might also check if there is updated driver software available.

Thanks for the reply John,

Just installed the latest build, still not detected.
My Iomega drive model number is CDRW6402EXT-B (it's the external one) and I have the latest update from the Iomega web site (v 2.3.7 build 203)

Hope you can help,
Steve

Jim H.

Updated to MC 103 and tried burning a disc - another
coaster. Wrote two tracks then gave message about media failure. There is nothing wrong with my media or my drive (Yamaha external SCSI)

Saved playlist to m3u type file and burned with Nero first time.

With the past few releases I've been unable to write a data CD.  What I just realized is that it's only the Sony that has the problem.  The TDK drive attached via Firewire will burn a data cd just fine.

With the Sony I get "Unable to start the write" followed by a "Failed: Open session.  Invalid field in parameter list".  Works OK in audio mode.

When I try to burn a data-cd with my
HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4240N (Notebook) I get the following error message: "power on, reset or bus device ocurred" after the last track. The cd is not readable any more.

What do I have to do?

Thanks Knut

I don't have an answer as yet on the non-working drives. I'll keep plugging.

Iomega,
Sony,
HL...

On the HL drive, you should try the latest build, there was a fix for a similar problem.

Question: Is the Sony an internal or external unit?

Updated to MC 103 and tried burning a disc - another
coaster. Wrote two tracks then gave message about media failure. There is nothing wrong with my media or my drive (Yamaha external SCSI)
Try burning with "direct decoding" unchecked and/or a lower burn speed (4X) to see if that helps. Try it in test mode to avoid ruining a CD. Let us know your findings. Thanks!

If you email me I'll send you a diagnostic version that might help pinpoint where the problem lies.
Thanks.
