Server Permissions
« on: May 06, 2023, 12:29:04 pm »

If you're using an old version of MC (prior to MC29), you will no longer be able to use some of our services.  Sorry, but these services are expensive for us to provide.  The core functionality of MC will continue to work in old versions, but CD lookup, cover art lookup, and similar back end services we provided at no charge will no longer work.  We do not support old versions.

Fortunately, you can still get a good price on an  MC31 upgrade.

Download and install.  https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,135936.0.html

New builds of MC29, 30, 31 or 32 may be required.

We moved our hosting off of Amazon S3 today, and onto greener pastures.

File hosting, formerly files.jriver.com, is now files.jriver-cdn.com (although the old domain will continue to exist and redirect you).
This change should be transparent to all users.

Cloudplay was also moved, however due to how Cloudplay was setup in the past (with some technical debt, that we hopefully cleared up now for the future), this may not be entirely transparent.

- On MC30 and 31, everything should continue to work just fine. Let us know if not!
- Older versions of MC will no longer be able to upload to Cloudplay.
- Playback might be impacted on older versions, in particular with RadioJRiver, we're looking into the impact here and some workarounds.

Do let us know if anything does not work properly - in particular with MC30 or 31. And we'll be updating MC28 and MC29 soon to adapt for these changes properly.

It won't stop working.  It will just not have access to JRiver servers any longer.

So, when I insert a CD to rip to my computer, and the MC does the "CD Lookup" to retrieve the CD title and track titles, what exactly is gonna happen (or NOT happen"?

Will it completely fail to read the CD at all, or just say "Failed to retrieve CD data" (or whatever the message typically is) and show a bunch of "Untitled" entries?

I can live with the latter (I usually modify the info manually anyway, but having it there helps me keep things correct).

I just want to make sure I understand the intentions.

Does it affect JRemote connections or MC27 login authentication?

Very unhappy with this. I've purchased the software numerous times in the past when I didn't need to (I wanted to support ongoing development) but cannot afford to do so again. This unfortunately means that I'll be losing part of the functionality that I paid for. Hopefully you can find some way to restore these services in the future.

Several years.

Several = a minimum of 3 years. Seems reasonable to me.

Not a fan of how this was handled though. IMHO it would have been better to absorb the cost for existing version owners and raise the price for new licenses to compensate. But it's not my company and JRiver has been on the market long enough that I guess they know what they are doing. i'm myself grateful that JRiver has not (yet anyway) moved entirely to a subscription model like everything else out there. I for one would not remain a customer were that to happen. I only use JRiver for Audio, 2-chan at that, WDM, and no advanced features really. So upgrades don't offer me anything really...

I think it's perfectly reasonable, considering bandwidth costs for the services in the older versions likely isn't insignificant. I'd be willing to bet JRiver's services in older versions consume more data than newer versions do, so having an end-of-life for the services in old versions of MC is reasonable in my mind.

Yes, it sucks if you use features like cover art and CD lookup in older versions and you won't be able to use them anymore without upgrading, but it's not unreasonable because a) it's probably not sustainable into the future with how everything has been increasing in price as of late thanks to inflation and b) having access to services in old versions for a few years (e.g. back to maybe MC29 or MC28, not sure) is at least 3 years. Though if you're on MC28 or MC29 (or whatever JRiver decides to support in regards to old versions) do keep in mind that with those the support may be only a year or two left, not sure how that'd work. I'd assume the older versions supported today don't have as much time left in regards to services support compared to the newly released MC31, for example.

IMHO it would have been better to absorb the cost for existing version owners and raise the price for new licenses to compensate.

I disagree, even if you increase prices on new licenses the costs maintaining those services on old versions isn't insignificant and will increase over time as newer MC versions become "old" because remember it's an ongoing cost for servers and bandwidth. Even if they kept increasing prices it still likely wouldn't be enough to help maintain those services in older versions (plus it may drive away new customers if prices increase too much), if I had to guess. At some point a line in the sand has to be drawn, and it has.

Fair argument. That being said the 1-day notice to end users I believe would either be ignorance (ie. intentionally disrespectful to customers,) or incompetence (ie. switching cloud providers and suddenly finding a cost problem.)

These are only tangentially related. We're switching hosting of some services, most prominently Cloudplay, which generates a lot of data usage, but that change requires an update to MC to retain full functionality.

The other thing to consider if you are on a very old version of MC, is that links to on-line services can change for all sorts of reasons (and in this case to save costs) but we have also seen meta data scraping sites go way, change thier APIs, block access etc etc.

I think it's pretty great that JRiver is going back and releasing updates for the last couple of versions so they keep working... but they can only go back so far.  I'm not sure they could realistically even open up the source code for say MC15, make changes and recompile a new version given all the changes to the compilers over that timeframe.

Seems like a good balance to me.

I don't understand this. For the sake of openness can someone please explain in not too technical terms where the cost is incurred in CD lookups and the difference between how MC31 and pre-MC28 handle it? Is/was it a 3rd-party service or is the location hard coded for example?
I upgraded to MC27 less than two and a half years ago and do not expect removal of functionality from paid software this soon. Struggling to understand how we're already up to 31 in that time, tbh.
Big fan of the software but feel the updates are thick and fast for functionality I mostly don't use.

You're helping pay for:

Hardware (disk drives, backup systems, network)

Our time and expense in maintaining complex servers that need frequent updates.

Bandwidth and other hosting costs.

Support costs such as this forum and the time we spend on it.

We have a team of people who keep all the software we use and sell up to date.

When you think of Media Center, you probably think of the software you download and install, but there is a lot of work that goes into the backend servers and services that Media Center uses.  We didn't charge for that in the past.  Now we do.

Your software will continue to work.  You can enter track information manually when you rip.  You can find art online and paste it into the tag window.

The Internet has many examples of services that were free once but are no longer.  Much of the quality news services, for example.

If you update MC from time to time, you'll see no difference.  If not, it won't be as convenient as it has been, but it will still work.

I'm sorry if anyone thinks this is unfair, but it's part of the cost of using good software.

JRiver Team, I am running 30.095, updated from 30.093 this afternoon.  In both versions, including a computer reboot, I am experiencing the error of the program unable to access the CD lookup databases - intermittent, not every disk.  Is 31 stable yet to just upgrade, or wait a couple more builds.

Thanks

There was an announcement stating this would happen during the server switch.  It is intermittent and will pass once all the data has been moved.

Expect a few bumps this week.  We're switching hosting services to a new provider.  We don't expect to be down long, but ...

If you're using an old version of MC (prior to MC28), you will no longer be able to use some of our services.  Sorry, but these services are expensive for us to provide.  The core functionality of MC will continue to work in old versions, but CD lookup, cover art lookup, and similar back end services we provided at no charge will no longer work.

Fortunately, you can still get a good price on an  MC31 upgrade.

Download and install.  https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,135936.0.html

New builds of MC28, 29, and 30 are required.

The cover art lookup feature is not working in MC 31 for me when ripping CDs.   This is the reason I upgraded.  I tried some trouble shooting with Windows Defender, but no luck.

So have I, and the cost even at an exchange rate of a 1 pound to a dollar it’s equivalent to 6 pints of beer, but lasts a whole year and doesn’t affect the waistline as much. I’m not a smoker but I’m told that in the UK it’s equivalent of 50 cigarettes…

I need a new build of MC31?  Is that build available?  It sounds from the link you provided that you are still working on server permissions issues?   Is that correct?  Should I be using MC 30 to get the features I thought I was retaining by upgrading.  That is CD lookup, artwork look up.   Which is still not available in MC31, is that what you are saying here?

There seems to be issues at the moment with things like CD lookup, likely have to wait a day or two for it to be investigated and hopefully fixed in a newer MC31 build.

So if I do not use MC for ripping, and my files all have their own artwork embedded, does this mean the server change will have no impact to me (on MC27)?
My library looks fine currently, but I don't know if this change has yet been implemented.

Aha.

I have MC 31, I noticed that Cloudplay at random times would stop playing and buffer the stream for anywhere from 5 to 15 seconds.

Otherwise no major issues.

I don't know if it is a problem or just the "new" Cloudplay....

I no longer see images associated with the uploaded playlists when I visit the Cloudplay home page, just the nondescript stock images.

Other than that, I saw no issues as I uploaded playlists.

I think that's because the users who are currently there did not include any cover art in the files.

I have cover art in all the files I upload (that's one of the items on my checklist for uploading a playlist), but I saw the stock image on the playlist I uploaded earlier this week.

Cloudplay uses YADB for cover art so there is probably something that needs to be fixed on our end due to the server changes.

OK, Cloudplay using YADB instead of embedded cover art would also explain another issue I recently saw...

Thanks for the follow-up comment.

It looks like the behind-the-scene-folk have repaired the issue.

Thank-you!
