BUG?: Failed to connect to YADB server
« on: February 11, 2003, 05:41:51 pm »

I'm running MC9.10.109 and all I ever get when I insert a cd is: Failed to connect to YADB server!

Is MC9 broken?  Is YADB dead?  Do I have to forward some ports for it to work through my cable router?

Thanks!

I have the same problem with 9.0.113
Uninstalled 113 and went to 9.0.105, same error message.
By passed router, shut down virus and firewall. In fact, shut down everything
except explorer and systray Same error message.

Ripped a "few" albums during the last 5 or 6 hours with build 113. No problems.

By the way: I compared the results from YADB with those from CDDB. It's very subjectiv (depends on the albums, there were some exotic ones), but I got more hits from YADB.

Just tried .113...  Why does YADB hate me?

Could someone please shed some light on how MC is connecting to YADB?  Is it simply HTTP, or some other protocol?  Does it use some weird port that my firewall isn't allowing through.

It used to work as recent as 9.0.88...

Hi Smackbadger,

It's just HTTP via port 80. Requests for info are normal HTTP GET requests, responses are of type text/xml.

Are you running ZoneAlarm?

Are you trying to lookup a CD or track? Or are you using YADB to help with recording a LP? This latter had a bug this past week - the connect attempt would expire before the search is done.

If this doesn't help, let me know. Somewhere in the archives is a description of what you can try to find out where it's breaking. I'll dig it out.

I'm trying to lookup a CD.

No Zone Alarm, or any other software firewall.  The only thing between me and the net is my DLink cable router and my cablemodem.

Here's what I'm doing:
Open CD, DVD, & Handhelds
Right-Click on CD and select Update from CD Database

Result:
Failed to connect to YADB server

Do you have Windows XP?

Windows Xp Has It's own Firewall, Is That Turned On?

Can you see this web page?

Yes, I can see that webpage just fine and I've looked at it before trying to figure out what's wrong.

Yes, I have XP SP1, but the firewall is turned off.

YADB lookup is the ONLY network problem (assuming it's really even trying to connect) I've ever had on this machine...

In settings, under device settings, do you have "enable on line CD lookup" checked?

If so, please give the exact steps you go through to get this.

I'm assuming you're just trying to rip a CD.  Try one you've never inserted.

CD lookup should be automatic during ripping.

On a related not MC crashes nicely if I have a CD inserted.  Select the CD drive.  Eject the CD, then reinsert it with the CD drive still selected...

Could you post your system info?

Copy from MC Help.

There may be hardware or driver problems here.

Jim,
I also can't reach YADB. If I have Zone Alarm running, I see outgoing and incoming activity
and then get the failure message. There isn't any alert from ZA so it isn't being blocked.
 I have W98se

Some firewalls are notorious for doing things they shouldn't -- even when disabled, occasionally even when uninstalled.

Trying uninstalling ZoneAlarm and rebooting -- just as a test.

Please report results.

Uninstalled ZoneAlarm. Still getting "Failed to connect to yabd server.

I also should have mentioned that I can connect to yadb using Jukebox 8.

I do not want to mess around ,but......
If there is a problem MC/ZoneAlarm , look like you have to try to solve it.
It is not like to say to use IE and not other browser to buy or get plugings
99% of the people use IE.
Millions and millions people use ZoneAlarm. To have to not use it to get cds infos is  raison enought to use another jukebox in my opinion.

This old  issue needs to be solve

But when I uninstalled ZoneAlarm, I still could not get data.
And when using JukeBox 8 and ZoneAlarm, I could reach YADB.

Here's what I just tried:
1) Rebooted
2) Started MC (9.0.113)
3) Inserted CD: Sting - A Brand New Day
4) Cancelled Autoplay asking me what to do with the CD
5) Right-clicked on the CD (Audio CD (3) (Y:)) and selected Rip (Copy CD)
6) Clicked OK on the pop-up window that said:
 Please Wait
   Action: Failed
Status: Failed to connect to YADB server

The same thing happens if I right-click on the CD and select Update CD from database.

EAC, WMP9, and MMJB can all ID the CD just fine...

I'm pretty sure this was working as recently as build 9.0.88.

Here's my system info:

I just thought of something.  Any chance something in the YADB lookup is confused because I didn't install MC in the "standard" place?

I now have 9.0114 installed in the standard location and still no YADB.
It worked for me somewhere before 9.0105 but I did not save it.
When I reload 8.xxx it works!!
