Media Server is back!
« on: February 12, 2003, 02:15:24 pm »

Media Server as of Version 111 now works! However, occassionally a connection does not get made and a strange message pops up: "Media Server unable to connect. Reason: Because I felt like it." That's weird but then winters are harsh in the mid-west and the dark, gloomy days are known to have psycholocial effects on some individuals. But seriously folks, a specific state had to be entered for that message to pop up, so I'm just curious as to what might be happening. Otherwise, the program continues to astound!

Thanks very much.  We'll find it and eliminate it.

Is this problem related to the size of one's database ??
Ive got 25,000 files and the ZIP file media library is over 2 megs ... maybe there is a timeout happening when the database is being zipped ??

Hmmmm...now can connect to my home computer through server, both by clicking either Search For Media Servers or the library name I assigned that appear on the drop-down.

However, when I highlight the library in the Library Manager dialogue and click 'Load', the progress bar appears, it attempts to connect for 5-10 secs., then aborts and announces it has timed out.

Doesn't even go through the motions connecting to King's library, either from drop-down or LM. Immediately announces 'Failed To Connect'.

Can someone try to access my library? Server is open. IP address: 24.147.89.61:80

Confirmed that I cannot connect to server remotely, after installing .111. I have used both the drop-down menu and Library Manager. Also, cannot connect to King's library either.

Again, the behavior is different - using King's address, it rejects immediately. Using my home address, it goes through the motions briefly, then aborts after 5-10 seconds.

It appears that it was a timeout problem and affected larger libraries.  It was a result of something we introduced last week to fix a different problem (Microsoft network code bug).

It should be fixed in the next build.

I tried your server and could not connect. I am trying from my office which is behind the usual corporate firewall. Which leads to a question that I have been meaning to ask: how does the server connect to a client?

No sooner than I posted the above, I loaded the freshly released 112 and I just connected to KingSparta's rather impressive server! This guy even has Barry White! Unfortunately, I did not see a note of the 3B's (Bach, Beethoven, Brahms)...

Well, the 3B's have been dead for a few years now...tough to stay on the charts.

BTW--You have an impressive library. I have been having a great time listening to tunes I have not heard in a long time.

Still unable to get to King's library after installing 112. Deleted and readded King's IP address through Library Manager. Attempted access both through LM>Load and the drop-down menu. Firewall closed.

Can access my own library through the server. Would someone else pls try mine and confirm?  24.147.89.61:80

Still not working, even with a re-install at the client end. Like the kid whose Mom forgot to pack dessert in his lunchbox - kind of hard to watch everyone else eating their Whoopie Pies....

Rhapsody and other streams are getting through, which suggests (?) that its not a firewall problem here in the office - unless there's something unique in MC that would result in blocking it.

Am getting error message on install - in_wma.dll and ASPI failure - init.

Harry,
Try deleting the entry and adding it again as just:

24.147.89.61 without the :80 .  It shouldn't make a difference but it might.  Also leave out the m01p:// .  Just enter 24.147.89.61 as the address.

It works from here.

Tried dropping the 80, nothing changed. Haven't been using the m01p:// iteration, so that's not it.

Can't get to Adam's library. Get very fast 'Can't Connect' message.

Sygate is running at home, but if that was the problem, King and Jim shouldn't be able to connect either, so its likely something at this end. Can't guess what, but I'll talk to our IT people next week.

They're probably happy I'm not clogging bandwidth, anyway.

I can connect to Harry the Hipster's server. Great stuff! I really like this aspect of Media Center. Yeah, there's plenty of programs that allow one to stream a bunch of songs, but I've found nothing like this that allows others to just search through someone else's library like this.

I can't connect to KingSparta's library right now... Get a very fast Can't Connect message...

I just tried and can't connect.  Firewall?  Sometimes firewalls will prevent communication even when disabled, and then they must be uninstalled.  Some kind of bug, I think.

If you want to try again, let me know.

Could somebody try connecting to my library please?  80.5.184.130

Just tried, Adam, and it doesn't work.  Is Media Server running on port 80?

Make sure you're using the latest build --  113.

I have not had anyone connect with MJ 9.0.113

It might be broken again.

King,
It could be the size of the database.

Microsoft's networking code has a bug that won't allow us to cancel a connection, so we added a time-out a week or so ago.  It was originally set to 10 seconds but then raised to 30 seconds in the last build or two.  We believe that it was timing out even on good connections if the zipping of the library took too long.  We may need to adjust it still, but you could try a smaller library as a test.

Haven't checked with 113 but on 112...

Media Server started...located by one system (wired/98SE)...not on another (802.11b/XP)...tho' I guess this could be timeout related too.  All running same version.

Just FYI. :)

Jim:

That could account for King, but my library is @18,000 files and my server is working selectively for others (you, udeups and King).

However,a dumb question: if there's a bottleneck at the client end (high traffic volume. problems with the T-1), could that trigger the timeout even though my server is accessible to others with better connections? I've noticed that my office access has slowed down generally over the last 10 days or so, and as I mentioned before, I don't get rejected immediately - it will sit attempting the connection for a while (maybe 30 seconds) before aborting.

Ok, my server is up again. It appears to have crashed over night. If anyone can connect, that would be great.

This is weird. As I watch the log of Media Server, every time I see someone try to connect, the program crashes (just media server, not media center). The transfer starts and then I get a Windows error stating the program must be terminated. Any clues as to what's going on? I've watched this happen about 4 times, each time restarting the program to watch it happen again...

Firewall or other network issue?

Can you try from your own network?  Even from the same PC.

You can also try from IE by entering this:

m01p://[IP]:[Port]

Ok, I tried to connect to the server from my computer. Media Center started to connect and it looked promising. Then, Media Center gave me an error that said "Failed to connect to a server. Reason: I feel like it." Then, Media Server crashed like the other times.

I am using a linksys router, but I have my media PC set as a demilitarized zone, allowing all ports to be forwarded to it. Also, I have had Media Server working with version .111 of MC with the current hardware setup. So, I don't *think* it's firewall issues... it could be though.

Thanks for the help, Jim.
