Using ID3v2 tags in MC33
« on: October 19, 2024, 10:28:15 am »

Dear all,

I know that this has been asked many times. But I haven't found a solution for this. And I remember these tags used to work in MC 23:
https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,113968.msg788800.html#msg788800

I have tagged my MP3 files with Mp3tag and fields like TSOP (Artist Sort) and TSO2 (Album Artist Sort) show up correctly in Tag Dump. However, they are not shown under Advanced in Tagging and I cannot use them for sorting. I have tried to add new fields (like 'ARTISTSORT' or 'Artist Sort') but they all don't work.

What do I have to configure to make those fields get recognized by MC to use them for sorting?

Many thanks in advance, Joerg

You can add a custom tag.  The name must match exactly, including case.  Please see the wiki.

Thanks for the fast reply. I haven't found a solution to my problem in the Wiki. When the correct frame shows up as "TSOP (Artist Sort)" in Tag Dump under 'ID3v2.3 Tag' what do I need to add as custom tag? I have tried out everything I can think of. And I am pretty sure back in MC 23 it worked when I added "Artist Sort" as custom tag.

I have attached some screenshots as example how the tags look like.

Maybe Matt can point me in the right direction, he helped me in 2018 with MC 23.

I would have expected the field "Artist Sort" to work. Could you email me a file tagged like you're using and I can look more? I'm matt at jriver. Thanks.

Thank you Matt for looking into this.
To what mail-address shall I send the file?

Adding a dot com would be good too!

There's actually no "Artist Sort" field there, but there's an "ARTIST SORT". Is it case sensitive?

I just tagged ARTISTSORT with Mp3tag.

Then I created an "Artist Sort" field in MC.

I imported the file and it was filled.

I did say to store the value in the file tags, but that shouldn't matter for reading.

I also changed the value in MC and it changed in Mp3tag.

All good - this was my mistake.

I imported first and created the custom fields afterwards. For whatever reason I was expecting that MC supports the ID3v2 tags without the need to create these fields in advance. Then I realized these fields are not there by deafult. After creating these fields I expected some magic to happen automatically.

In fact, instead of waiting for magic I had to perform 'Update Library (from tags)' from Library Tools. After that 'Artist Sort' gets updated.

So hopefully, when I create all the fields that I want to use (and show up in Tag Dump) they will will appear in Advanced after Update Library. If not, I will let you know.

Thanks for your support and patience and for your quick replies!
