New Windows install and MC upgrade advice
« on: October 27, 2024, 01:41:31 pm »

Hi

I'm having to install a new (M.2) SSD and reinstall Windows.  I was running the old MC 21. Given the installation drive is being replaced (and I do not have access to anything that was on the old one) how should I proceed? I have done a fresh installation of Windows 10 and the various updates to it. I was planning to upgrade to the latest MC (even though I only use it to play ripped audio tracks). So some questions:

1. Should I upgrade to Windows 11 first? (My computer is now somewhat old with an ASRock Z97E-ITX/ac motherboard dating from around 2014...)

2. Do I have install the old MC 21 and then do the upgrade?

3. How do I recover my MC license?

Thanks in advance

JJJ

Thanks for the reply re my question 3.  I found my Registration Code. (I have also found that I will need to upgrade my motherboard in order to be ready for Win 11 as my board, apparently, fails the TPM 2.0 test.) So I am left with question 2.  Am I correct that I can simply install the current version of MC and get it going with the upgraded registration code (post purchase)?

Ok got everything installed.

God this is painful.  I used to have my library split (automatically) into Stereo albums and Multichannel albums (ordered by Album Artist), a Zone for each and a defined audio path for each (HDMI for multichannel, ESI Juli@ PCM for stereo). Zoneswitch was set up to change the Zone and hence audio path based on number of channels. I'm struggling to remember how I set this up - it's been 10 years!  🫣 At the moment everything is dumped together under Albums.

(Exploring is made worse by the fact that my display is an 83" LG OLED and the music server, mouse and keyboard are way off to the side of it.)

Restore a library backup, it will have all of your settings.

I created a new thread here https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,139954.0.html to discuss the views I'm trying to recreate.

Today you've learned the value of backing up your data. It's cheap and often free to periodically throw an MC Library backup on Google Drive or attach to an email to yourself, transfer to your phone, flash drive, etc. If your data only exists in one place it doesn't really exist at all.
