Try Tailscale.  I believe you can install it on the machine hosting JRiver in your home and then install it on your phone.  Start by signing up at tailscale.com and watch a few youtube videos if you have trouble setting it up.  It is working for me, but I'm using Unraid and JRiver in a docker with an Android phone. Tailscale is pretty amazing.

Yes, make sure you set it as an "always-on" VPN in the Android VPN settings. I've also found their DNS servers to be wonky so I disable them in the settings (MagicDNS name resolution still works).

I've never seen this happen and I've been using JRemote on Android for years. If I ever noticed this happening I would've reported it as things like that would bug the hell out of me. :P In my case all cover art in my library is JPG 1000x1000 and is embedded in my FLAC files. Is the cover art embedded in your files or an external (e.g. folder.jpg) file? Is building thumbnails enabled on the server when importing? You might also try the build missing thumbnails option if that's the case and not all are built on the server.

All cover art is embedded in my FLAC files and some are bigger than 1000x1000 as I often scan them from the CD booklets when there is no decent art found in the databases brought up by my ripping software. No cover art is missing on the server instance of MC.

The problem only presents on JRemote2 (or the Apple version or the prior Android version) when controlling a client instance of MC.

It is related to the thumbnail size setting in JRemote2. It happens very regularly with the size set to Large. Set it to Medium (or another option) and suddenly your missing thumbnails appear correctly. Switch back to Large and the albums in question revert to blue music symbols again.

I've seen this behaviour at least at three friend's houses.

Just to be clear, your JRemote is connected to MC, which in itself is connected to another MC server?

In this case the issue is likely with MC itself lacking the icons for some reason. I can try to see if it reproduces easily.

Correct. But the server instance of MC has no missing thumbnails and none of my albums have missing cover art. Cover art is embedded in every FLAC file and there is also an "Album Cover.jpg" in each album folder which is not used by MC. The client instances of MC show all the cover art correctly.

The missing thumbnails are only on the phone or tablet.

I agree that it's probably an MC problem as it shows up no matter which controller is used. I've seen it on iPads and JRemote/JRemote2 on Android.

Add: Trying to upload screenshots.

1 is with thumbnails set to Large showing missing cover to left of Superman soundtrack. 2 is with thumbnails set to medium but before refreshing the screen. Horowitz cover shows. 3 is after refreshing the screen to show the medium sized thumbnails.

Was asked to leave my review on the site.
Issues:
1. When opening any playlists that's large (over 400+ songs jremote 3 will either freeze and crash or just crash. The same setup works great on jremote 2.
Trying to shuffle play a large playlist causes the same issue.
2. While in any playlist, if you rotate your screen you get kicked back to the root directory and have to dig through your setup to find your spot again. (Present since jremote 2)
3. While in any playlist, if you rotate your screen you have to re-rate 2-3 times to get the rating to stick. (Present since jremote 2)
4. If the track that's playing doesn't have an album name, won't display Artist or album, see screenshots. (Present since jremote 2)
5. When playing a track, there's an extra space between "[Artist]  - [Album]" vs "[Artist] - [Album]". (Present since jremote 2)

I will report any more findings as I come across them.

That should be fixed in the next build, available in a few days.  Watch this thread:  https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,140408.msg974631.html#msg974631

I have reported the same behaviour, and I was also seeing it with the previous JRemote 2.

Rotation resetting the position should be improved in the next update as well, let us know if it still happens in some scenarios then.

It looks like the update was approved by Google and should be coming to your devices soon. Please let us know how these changes fare, especially the performance of loading playlists.

JRemote 3.0.1 (02/03/2025)

1. Fixed: Changing device orientation after connecting to a server manually could cause view state to be lost.
2. Changed: Improved performance when loading large playlists.
3. Changed: Updated the media player for better future device compatibility.

This issue seams to be resolved.

Sitll not working as of 2/3 with the latest's build 3.0.1

6. The latest build 3.0.1 has introduced another issue. In any playlists, holding down on a track and select "Play next" no longer works.

Can you elaborate on the exact steps you take to reproduce the rotation issues, ideally all the way from starting the app (including how you start it/open it) in as much detail as possible?
It matters a lot on how you got to the place where you observe the problem, or steps you did previously, as I'm not able to reproduce the issue.

I have fixed one such issue in 3.0.1 that was related to manually connecting to a server (or just having had setup a fresh server) before, which didn't actually happened if you already had a server saved and it automatically connected to it. So all steps matter.

Play Next will be fixed again in the next update, it was accidentally queueing the selected file before the current one, rather then right behind it, when I redid playlist handling for the performance.

1. Go into any playlist, play any song (i chose something down a little bit)
    screenshot (Screenshot_20250203_114652_JRemote3.jpg)

2. Open the now playing screen.
    screenshot (Screenshot_20250203_114918_JRemote3.jpg)

3. Rotate your device

4. Hit the back button.
    screenshot (Screenshot_20250203_115622_JRemote3.jpg)

Doing those steps, you will be kicked back to the root directory.

Ah I see, you actually rotate on playing now, not in the playlist itself. That'll help to figure it out, thanks.

Also, this only happens when you 1st open jremote3, go into any playlist (don't even have to select something to play), scroll down in your playlist and then rotate your screen will kick you back to the top of your playlist. Again, this only happens when your 1st open jremote3.

Good afternoon. Developers, please find an opportunity to change the design of the volume and track sliders. They are very thin. We use your application in our work, we have to quickly change the volume, and unfortunately it doesn't work on the tablet. The volume slider is very thin and it's not even possible to hook it the first time. You have to poke your finger several times before the slider catches.

Hendrik, thanks for the 3.0.1 update, this seems to have fixed the problem I was having when rotating the screen.

Thanks for the updated version of JRemote.
I've already bought it and it works very smooth.
However, it does still not support Android Auto.
Would it be possible to add this for version 3??
Thanks a lot,
Ruediger

A new version is now in review at Google.  It addresses the issue with Play Next not working, and also some cosmetic issues brought up here in the last week.

Some of the more complex issues will require investigating, since it's likely that the data received from Media Center itself is causing the behavior (eg. missing thumbnails, etc).

JRemote 3.0.2 (02/11/2025)

1. Fixed: Play Next queued the file before the currently playing one, instead of after.
2. Fixed: Playing Now did not show the Artist if a file had no Album.
3. Fixed: Removed an extra space between Artist and Album on the Playing Now screen.
4. Fixed: Rotating the phone while on Playing Now could lose navigation state.
5. NEW: The release year of music files and albums is shown on Playing Now and track lists.

Thank you Hendrik for your support on the issues. I do have a suggestion for the missing album art as I had that problem years ago, In JRiver, try right clicking and copying the image of the album that is a working correctly and pasting for the entire album. Doing this resolved my issues on that. Not sure if that will work in the instance, but won't hurt to try.

Thank you again Hendrik for addressing the issues we've been experiencing. I can say the new release has fixed almost everything. The only thing I see with the latest version is, almost every song I play, when it gets to the 2-4 min mark of a song, it hiccups (almost like skipping and cutting out). I can play the same playlist and the same songs on Jremote2 with the same speaker setup and don't experience that. I am testing to determine if based on the amount of time that has played vs % of the song that has already played.

Again, thank you for your hard work addressing the issues.

Thank you for letting me know you're not have the same issue. Which gave me an idea and clearing the cache resolved the issue where the playback hiccups.

5. NEW: The release year of music files and albums is shown on Playing Now and track lists.

Thanks for adding this but the displayed years are wrong. Let's say an album was released in 1987 and it's set to 1987 in the metadata (Date tag) but it's displaying it as 1986. It's displaying dates a year behind, for every album I've tried.

You get the idea, it should (hopefully) be easy to reproduce.

Cannot reproduce, I live on the right side of the UTC line. :)
I have added handling for timezones to the date handling, hopefully that solves it. In the meantime, I can recommend moving further east as a workaround.  ::)

I can confirm the years are off by 1 year.

Also, can you change the color of the file type to something else besides blue? I have noticed this on every version of JRemote, if you leave the Now Playing screen on for a long period of time, over time it will cause a burn in affect.
