Unusual Weather
« on: January 17, 2003, 06:32:39 am »

We are having/have had very unusual weather for Tennessee. We're not very well equipped for "severe" winter storms here and when it happens, it's a really big deal. It snowed an average of 6" here in about four hours Thursday. It's now 18° F. and the forecast is for 8° F tonight. The interstates through Nashville have been closed down due to "jack-knifed" trucks, stalled cars and general traffic related mayhem. I know it's business as usual for some of you folks but it's a big, big mess  here.

Anyhow, here's a few pictures of my house and "back forty" (actually it's my back 18 ). Wish I had got there before my neighbor's four-wheelers did but it's still pretty. For more go to:

Zevele,
I don't know why. This forum is sort of like a refuge, I suppose. More like hanging out in the bar instead of the lobby.
I like to walk in the woods, also. I seem to have the only trees left around here.

Refuge is a good word.  It's a nutty world out there sometimes.

Walking in a wood always sets me right.

I've been sawing away at a big oak tree at the bottom of my driveway for the last couple of months, splitting it up with an axe, and huffing and puffing behind the wheelbarrow to get it back up to the house.

There is something about wood that quiets the mind.  It's always different.  Every chunk you open with an axe is a new display of grain and color.  I've been saving the best chunks for my museum.

Thanks for the pictures.  They are beautiful.

Anyone for a pint?

Working on #3 right now.  ;D

CVIII-

Maybe business as usual, but it still bites when not ready for this type of weather. We've been, more or less, lucky this year with not much snow.

Past couple of weeks I have been outside in it. Best Buy is history for me. Damn. It was nice to be inside for so long. Now it's -6 below in the morning and 20 mph winds up in the lift 30 feet off the ground. Must get another beer.... ::)

EDIT:

Sorry SG, didn't even say anything about the nice pics. Looks great. Enjoy the weather. Heh heh....

Wish I could say yes...X-10 cam could be interesting.

You know, they have one of the biggest LAN systems around. Maybe you could have one of the guys hack it for just for fun.  ;)

A Best Buy hidden camera? That could be interesting.

I've been working on the new Lowe's Home Center here. I don't know how widespread they are but if you don't know, it's a BIG hardware store. Can't wait.

People here in the "Sunny South" always worry about getting "snowed in" if they even see a few flakes.  I grew up in North Dakota, and have been literally snowed in.  Once, the snow was so deep it covered the entire front of the house, and the drift ran up onto the roof.  The snow was 15 feet deep!  :o They dug us out with a pay loader after a couple of days.

I lived in Michigan until I was 16. The 'Lake Effect' snow we would get was unreal. Here, in MN, we get much colder but rarely get that kind of snow. The worst one I've seen here was the Halloween blizzard a few years ago. Rare here. There it was not uncommon to get that a couple of times a year.

One big storm had my Dad out riding the snowmobile down the road. He was taking a friend of the families son to work. (Why, I don't know??) He said it wasn't too bad until they drove over the top of a state plow truck. The only thing he could see was the yellow light on the top of the cab. Should have just stayed home.  :P

I spent a couple hours this afternoon going after the old oak tree again with John Gateley of JRiver/AfterNap/YADB fame.  He was good.  He could lift the axe above his head and the oak practically flew apart.  Pushing the wheelbarrow up the hill became a badge of courage (the one time we did it).  I begged him to stop, thinking I should have paid attention in the CPR class.  But nature stopped him short.  I got to push the wheelbarrow the last 10% of the way up the hill and all the way to the garage.

All at about 15 degrees F.  About -8 C.  Just another day in the Frozen North.

AfterNap .... that takes me back. I believe that my first communication with JimH involved AfterNap.

That reminds me of something I've been meaning to tell: The "Help" button on Media Server takes you to the Music01 web site ... or it did a few builds ago.

Music01 ... if only ...

Deerhunter,
The details of the how-to is:
1. Find a picture you want to post at any web site, including your own
2. Right-click the picture and then click "Properties"
3. HIGHLIGHT  and copy the address to the picture on your clipboard (CTRL+C works well)
4. Go "reply" to the thread you want the picture in
5. Select the "Insert Image" icon (See, it works even on that image)
6. Paste (CTRL+V) the picture address between the "img"s in brackets, making sure the URL in caps is deleted
7. Select "Preview" to see if it looks the way you want it to.
8. If so, "Post" it. If not, try again.
Seems very involved and tedious but it's not really after you get used to doing it.

CVIII

Everybody else,

This is the way I do it. If there's a better way, please say so.

well that is really An Updated Music01 Demo Page, they have always had Music01 Before AfterNap and it had where you could download a few Secure Music Files not really the same as the Music01 Streaming And Downloading We Beta tested in 2001\2002

There is also a spelling error in the media server.

Hey it worked. Had to delete some thing after the jpg.

Anyway this is my own oil and gas well in my backyard with the house in the background. It is pumping out all the free natural gas I need so I really don't mind this unusually cold weather. People don't realize there is oil in Ohio. We have over 2000 wells in our county. Of course many or dried up and only produce gas for the lucky ones that own them.
