TiVo and Media Center
« on: May 07, 2003, 07:11:21 am »

JRiver Media Center can serve music and image files to a TiVo Series 2 if the TiVo has Home Media Option installed.

This board is for any questions or comments about this or anything else TiVo related.

TiVo Instructions are here:

http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?board=7;action=display;threadid=11939

Here's the Media Center page:

www.jrmediacenter.com

Media Center is $39.98 and has a 30 day free trial of the full version.  Purchase is in the Help section of the program.

BTW - without JRiver MC9, Tivo HMO is weak.  With MC9  WOW!  It is sooooo much better.   These pics help.  But to truely understand, you don't have to do much in the way of administration - just let MC9 do all the work.   It is an awsome combo!

Is there a FAQ or thread that discusses the features of Media Center as it relates to Tivo and HMO? What's so cool about Media Center that I need to use it?

Hello Mr. Nonsmoker ,
The closest thing to a FAQ we have is:

http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?board=7;action=display;threadid=11939

Media Center is much better for organizing your music, and you can share this organization with your TiVo (including Smart Lists).

Media Server will also stream internet radio stations to the TiVo.

Firstly - you're the first person to figure out my username (I use the same name on other boards). ;D

Anyway - it looks like I'll have to play a little to really see what Media Center can do for me.

Hi,

Does the Media Server currently support streaming of RealAudio content to TIVO. I am aware of TIVO not supporting RealAudio, but I was hoping that Media Center and Media Server could help me on this.....
If not, are there any current plans to support this...  :)

Cheers,

Nosmo-

I didn't like HMO until I used it with Media Center!   I was ready to dump it - until I found the ability to create smart lists and acess them via the tivo!

CD -

IIRC, there is no way to do this.  Only MP3 and WMA type streams...  do a search for more info....

Hi,

I have a list of four streaming media entries in my library. Two of these files are MP3-based. and two are Windows media based. When I launch the "Music and Photos" on TIVO I can only see the MP3 entries. The Windows media references are not shown.  ?

Is there some configuration I have missed ?

Thanks a bunch,

Check under Settings/Options/TiVo HMO in Media Server and make sure "Support all audio formats..." is enabled. You have to let it download and install an MP3 encoder which it should do automatically the first time it needs one.

I guess the other possibility is that the wma files have rights protection on them.

JohnT,

Thanks for your suggestion. I have (unfortunately) already done what you suggested. And yes, I was asked to download an MP3 encoder the first time I enabled it....... I don't think this is related to "media rights". The stations I am trying to stream are NPR (National Public Radio) streams. One of them can be reached using the following URL:

http://www.kqed.org/w/streamingfiles/kqed_wmp.asx

- It works great as long as I use the Media Center......

Cheers,

i've been using Media Center with TiVo for a bit and like it, but then recently i came across MoodLogic for TiVo--anybody seen it?  i think it kicks ass... was a little hard to find on the TiVo site which then ends up linking to: http://www.moodlogic.com/tivo.html

i love it! uses category data such as mood, tempo & genre... cleaned up all my dirty song info and has stuff they call SmartMixing... dynamically generates a list of songs based on my pick of artist and a mood 'direction'

what do you guys think?

A couple of things

1. Will Media center ever support MPG video streaming?
2. Moodlogic is very nice BUT - its 29.00 a year - it's the gift which make you keep giving.

I have installed MC version 10 and can get to step 4 in the Using Tivo directions.  I can start the Media Server (from Media Center, Tools, Advanced Tools, Media Server.  But when I click on Media Server, I get a message that the Media Server is already running.  So how do I select ports, etc.  If it's already up and running, where is it on my Tivo?

Thanks.

If it is working correctly, you should see it on your TIVO screen as another option under the Music & Photos option. You should see both the TIVO choices and the Media Center options for music & photos. I have been using it for a long time now, and it works fine. The only problem that I have is with the streaming Internet radio stations on my playlists.

I cannot find the answer to this so here goes.
I am currently subscribing to the Dish Network and have the PVR501 from them.
Is that supported by media center?  I don't think so...
I am thinking about switching to DirectTV as it is a TIVO,
Does DirectTV's Tivo support HMO and can I use Media Center with that PVR?
I would like to get my music from my pc to the entertainment room.
I also assume that once I select music via the TIVO off my TV screen the PC will play the music thru it's audio out so I would connect that to my stereo system and have stereo.  Is that true??

Thanks

Yes on stereo, but no on both DirectTV options, as far as I know.  TiVo HMO is required.  It's a free feature of recent TiVo's.  You would need a TiVo TiVo, but I'm not sure how that would work with DirectTV.

Running HMO on my Tivo
running media center 10.  I can see my entire mp3 library just fine .  My issue is with streams.  It is my understanding that if I can play I stream with jriver, I can share it with TiVo.  The stream in queston is a WMA file.
I have no idea what I am doing wrong.  I made a playlist called streaming and dragged the streaming file to it.
On the TiVo, I don't see the playlist called streaming that I made.
Did I miss something?

If you can't see it, it's probably showing as a video (wmv) file. Check and see. You may be able to fool the library into thinking it's an audio stream.
