How about a "negative" rating?
« on: October 16, 2003, 03:54:17 pm »

I was just wondering if a "negative" (less than zero) rating could be added - these could be useful to tag songs to never play!  I know it seems like you could just remove the ones you don't like from the library but some are part of albums that I would like to keep intact.  This would be handy when shuffling my whole collection.

I have a huge library and probably will never have time to go through to rate all the songs (so I could sort them on a smartlist) - but I definitly would like to be able to identify the ones I never want to hear!  :)

Just one "negative" or "never play" star would be great!

You can simply add a playlist that only show tracks with ratings greater then or equal to what you specify.  For example, I have songs that I really like that I give 4 and 5 stars and a playlist that shows all songs with at least 4 stars.

Using the powerful boolean language that is included in playlist/smartlist creation you can achieve the behavior you desire without having to add new functionality to the software.

I don't understand this request.  If you don't want to hear a song, give it a 1-star rating, then manipulate your view schemes and/or playlists and smartlists accordingly.  Or, don't rate the songs at all--and consider them to have "0 stars".

Personally, I think a -5 to + 5 rating would be nice to have. Right now my "neutral" rating is 3. How about 0-5 and "sucks the big one" as a bonus rating  ;D

I use one star for tracks I hate that are part of a larger set that I want to keep together.

You should be able to do a smartlist that is ratings >1 or not rated. (I'm at work, so I can't verify)

It sounds like this will give you what you want.

I give everything that I don't have time to rate a 2 rating.  The baddies I hate get 1 like I mentioned above, and I have Smartlists for >=3, and >=2.

You can rate a all unrated tracks at once using the Unrated Smartlist, do a select all and click on 2 stars to use my suggestion above, for example.

I knew I would get hammered with whys and you can do other types of sorting - I just like to have the ability to use zero through for 5 for songs that I like and would like one additional rating for - I hate!  I have over 20,000 songs and when I am sitting in my office at work I just let it shuffle through - I was just thinking it would be nice to be able to flag the songs I really don't like (which is far fewer than the ones I do).  Anyway - thanks for your suggestions.....

The absolute only difference between having negative ratings and the current setup is a psychological one.  What you need when you rate tracks is scale.  It doesn't matter if the scale includes negative numbers or not, just that the scale is wide enough.  In other words, do you need 10 stars of "room" to rate, or just 5?  This has been debated here before, and what we have after all of that is the current 5-star rating system.

So, right now you have 5 ratings choices (6 if you count unrated tracks as "0 stars", and you are diligent about rating newly-imported tracks, of course).  Obviously, right now, you can give awful tracks 0 or 1 stars.  This will work fine.

So, the debate--once again--becomes: "I need more than 5 stars to rate accurately".  And again, I am jealous of your psychological stability if this is actually true.  For my own part, my mood and tastes vary enough that having a 10-star scale would be utterly ridiculous.

I mean, what is the difference between 6 and 7 stars?  And is that miniscule difference so accurate and important that it holds true every day, for every mood you have?  If so, I envy your psychological steadfastness.

You can always use custom fields for sorting purposes if need be.

I don't understand the problem here and would not like to see the program over complicated like this.  Tell me why you cannot fit your rating set up into this framework or something similar:

0 = needs rating
1 = never want to hear except as part of an album that I want to keep.
2 = not bad - listenable
3 = good
4 = very good
5 = all time favorite

Good answer, JLee.  Now, try doing the same thing with a 10-star rating.  What would we have?

 0 = needs rating
 1 = never want to hear except as part of an album that I want to keep.
 2 = probably never want to hear, I dunno.
 3 = a bit bad - somewhat listenable
 4 = a bit bad - but purdy listenable
 5 = good
 6 = gooder
 7 = gooder still
 8 = very good
 9 = very gooder
10 = all-time favorite

And if you merely changed some of the ratings to be negative, there really is no difference where the scale is concerned, but the meanings become even more clouded:

 -1 = never want to hear except as part of an album that I want to keep.
 0 = needs rating
 1 = probably never want to hear, I dunno.
 2 = a bit bad - somewhat listenable
 3 = a bit bad - but purdy listenable
 4 = good
 5 = gooder
 6 = gooder still
 7 = very good
 8 = very gooder
 9 = all-time favorite

Some of you asking for negative ratings must surely be metric-phobic :-)

Scale is insignificant:  resolution is the item of interest.

Nameless, Jlee - I am new to media center and was simply making a suggestion - I wasn't trying to start a flame war - I can appreciate both of your opinions.  I agree 10 is too many and in my humble opinion I would like to have 6 - some only want 2 or don't even use this.

If this isn't something that will happen or be added, obviously I would have to adjust the way I want to do my ratings.

I didn't know that this board was being used to belittle people for throwing ideas out there for the JRiver team - and it is unfortunate that the moderators on this board tolerate it.

milehigh,
I apologize for them, but I think they're only guilty of poor humor.  I don't think any ill will was intended.

Guys (you know who you are),
Say you're sorry and shake hands.

Dad is right--I certainly meant no offense.  I was just trying to make a point, in my usual goofy way.  It was meant in good humor (even if it wasn't all that good).

And trust me, the mods do not put up with people being belittled here, either.  There is a difference between criticism of people, and that of ideas.  Again, I apologize that you took what I said personally--it was NOT intended that way whatsoever!

All ideas are welcomed here, and no one has a monopoly on them, least of all me!

I merely offered a solution and asked why (if at all) it would not work:

If a suggestion came forward as to why it would not work I would have been glad to think about it and offer an alternative suggestion.

I just want to help 'cos I know what it is like being a newbie.

[reflective mode]    Having said that I remember having a go at Doof about 600 posts ago without realising just how wrong I was and how much help she would be over the coming months.  I was very sorry about that and I'm very sorry if I've upset you milehigh. My post was not intended to belittle you.  I can see now though that it could have been a little more sympathetically worded.  Sorry! :-[  [/reflective mode]

p.s.  - Sorry Dad.

Moral of the story:

You make a suggestion.
We all comment (but not with very good choice of words).
You make a stand.
JRiver get on your side (quote rightly).
We say sorry.
You still have the greatest software on the planet and you know that the support is great and timely too.

And all that happens within 2 hours.  Now what could be better than that!

And another thing (sorry to ramble).  The best thing about MC is that it's so customisiable.  Like namesless said, if you want ratings ranging from -5 to +5 you can have it now.  Just add a new field via Tools>Options>Tree and View settings and make it a 'List' data type with all the values (-5;-4;-3;-2 etc).

I am not upset - to me an option to have a negative or never play rating would be useful - I agree - 10 is too many (for me) and 5 is not enough (or 6 with a blank) for me.  Just my opinion.  Anyway - I still would like to see a negative rating.

I do agree it is a good program - although there is a bit of a learning curve.  Thanks for your suggestions and I do appreciate the feedback.

Jlee - I have got into this section but there is no way to change the data section under "rating"  - is there a way to change the integer value?  I can see 1 though 5 there....

Sorry - I should have been clearer.  You need to forget about Rating and create your own custom field (use Add not edit).  You could call it 'My Rating' and have it display as 'Rating' if you like.  Set the category to General.  Edit the built in Rating field (that you probably won't use) and change the category to something else (like Extended for example).  Then edit all the other fields you normally use for tagging setting the category to General.  When you've done this you can set up the Action Window> File properties to show the General section. To do this open the Action Window at File Properties (Alt+Enter is a quick way) then click the middle of the 3 buttons> Fields to show> General.

Hope this helps.

It was a comment I made in the infamous 'Annoying feature of playing now' thread.  Do you remember that one?

Only the dead ones.  I haven't been in school for awhile, but I'd guess that some are still alive.  In any event, it was a joke.
