Media Server instructions?
« on: November 17, 2003, 01:41:00 pm »

I have a really, really basic question about Media Server. If this is answered elsewhere, please refer me.

How do I connect to my home computer (running Media Server) from my work computer? Do I need to know an IP address? If so, how do I find it?

At home I have a desktop running WinXP connected to a Linksys (wireless) router which is connected to my DSL modem. Running MC9 build 305.

see, told ya, really basic.

thanks.

Hi,

Your DSL modem has an IP address, check your manual for the command to show it.

If you are using NAT (and you probably are), then you'll need to tlell the DSL modem how to forward requests for Media Server on to your internal network. Again, check your manual, and in Media Server choose the port yourself. Also the command ifconfig on the Media Server machine (in a command window) will tell you that machine's IP address (if it is 10.x.x.x or 192.168.x.x, it is NATted and you'll need the DSL modem IP address at work).

What does NAT mean?

Mine is definitey NAT'd 'cause it's a 192 address, that's what made me think I had to find another IP address, so it's the DSL modem address I need. Okay.

Sure hope I have a manual for that thing.

thanks

Please try a google search for this.  NAT is Network Address Translation.  The website of your router may have more good info.  linksys.com does.
