Request - rip to ape and mp3 in one session
« on: January 29, 2004, 11:02:40 pm »

Many of us maintain two formats for our collections - ape and mp3.  We need mp3 for portables and network streamers.  It would be nice if I can rip a cd and have it convert to ape and mp3 automatically, and put them into the proper folders.

I know it would take longer, but it is obviously possible, using the original wav file.

Any chance we can see this in an upcoming release?

Anyone else want to see this?

thanks again,

Dan

Obviously your looking for an MC solution and there isn't one currently. However, there is outside MC (FYI). Do some googling for MAREO which uses EAC (and maybe CDeX) to do the rip and then takes the wav and converts it to just one or into as many different formats as you desire...without further intervention. Once done, import them into MC. I don't have any practical experience with MAREO, but many do (over at Hydrogen Audio). The skinny is that it works nicely.

Couldn't you set up MAREO as an external encoder?  I haven't tried this, but it seems like it could work...

BTW you can find MAREO here http://mareo.netfirms.com/

well, that does look interesting, but I would like this in MC.

Right now I use EAC to rip b/c it is the best.  But I would switch to MC for ripping if it could do this all in one step.

skeet...

The problem with using MC/external encoder option/MAREO is tagging (among possibly other things). MC wildcards are unknown or non-existant...and so cannot be passed to the external encoder. I guess if you don't using any tagging parameters in the external encoder then it might work...but I doubt it since MC will still want to tag the file (which may be OK on the 1st encode but will break on 2nd, 3rd, etc.).

thats what I do too - now.  But it would be nice for them to add the option of ripping to both formats, hence this topic.

J River - any chance of this happening?

I posted a similar request somewhere.  Ideally I would like library to store a single tag taht can refer to and stay linked to one or more versions of the same song/file.  I also rip to APE but hate having to convert on the fly to my iPod, takes forever, also my Roku HD1000 and Audiotron require something other than APE, MP3 works on both.  I would love each entry in MC to have a way to associate more than one file.  This way it can automatically keep tags in sync, number of plays, ratings, etc. together.  This would be a killer feature.

I more requests helps move this request up the "to do" list, then count me in for 12 votes.  This would make MC a much better program for me, that's for sure.

It looks like a lot of people are maintaining two libraries to avoid having to transcode ape files whenever they want to sync to their handhelds.

Count me in on this feature request - as well as some way to keep play/smartlists in sync as well.  (Allowing tree hierarchies to be copied and pasted would already be a big improvement.)

If this were a democracy, then you could count my vote too  ;)

As it's not, just count this as more proof of consumer demand !

I'm up for it too. I currently use Flac and Ogg mainly. I would really like flac integrartion, but since it's not going to happen, I'd be happy with any other lossless codec and ogg

Another vote.   APE and mp3 is something I'm doing all the time and keeping the two libraries in sync takes a bit of work.

This feels like "monentum", and I think that's a good thing. :)

Fingers crossed, not holding breath.

I just wanted to say "thank you" for letting us know.

I would rather know that this will be 3-4 months or more in the future, than wonder every day if it's gonna be in this build.

Obviously, I wish it was gonna happen soon, but I'd way rather know not to wait for it, and figure a different way to handle this issue, than keep waiting for something that I'm not gonna see anytime soon.

It is this type of communication that makes love MC and this board.

Thank you.

Any update on this?  I would also greatly appreciate either dual mode ripping or on the fly conversion for streaming my lossless wma files to my place of business.

Not likely anytime soon, but you can easily convert an APE library to MP3 (as a copy).  Try File / Library Manager and make a new library, cloning the old one in a new location.

Then select a few files (at first) and choose tools/convert.  Do NOT delete the original files.  Check that they are there after you've done a few.

Thanks for the speedy reply Jim.

Can I assume that the cloned library does not link to the original, such that a tag change to one will propagate to the clone?  I'm guessing I should have my library where I like it before I clone it...

Yes, they are separate.  Cloning just populates it to start from.

I keep APE in C:\music and MP3 in C:\music2.

Try a few before you do very many and verify that you still have the originals.
