Use Media Center to connect to Media Server and try playing the MP3s there.
If that doesn't work, it's a problem with your library.

How do I play MP3s in the Media Server?  I am assuming that once media server is up and runnning it is automatically connected to Media Center since this is th eprogram that launched it.

Start Media Server (and while you're at it, check all the settings).

Start Media Center if it is not started.

Under Media Center, click on File->Library->Search for Media Servers

Once it has connected, then try playing.

Make sure the Media Server status window is visible, are there any messages on the Media Server side?

What does your network look like?

The media server window is open and there are no error messages at the bottom.  I am able to see and hear songs playing on the media server from my media library, but when I attempt to acess throught he tio I get error 3-5-6 at various leves.  SOmetiimes when initally opening the "media center music files on desktop" sometimes I am able to get to and see the list of music files available, but they never play through the tivo and I end up with the error message 3-5-6.

I am running a Dell 3200 windows XP. It is where all of my music files and media center are stored and this computer is hooked up to a wireless network though D-Link router.

Restart Media Server, try the TiVo, then copy and paste the Media Server messages here.

Any other machines on the wireless? Any firewall/spam filter/spyware or anything else (is XP still running the firewall)?

On the TiVo, check the last successful connect time.

The firewall may be the cause of this. I'm assuming TiVo desktop works, right? It's just Media Server that isn't. Make sure your firewall is allowing traffic on 8079 through.

If you are comfortable with the registry editor, add a DWORD value called
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JRiver\Music01 Server\TiVoDebug
and set it to run. Then run MS again and post the status messages here (just a few at first).

This is really acting like something is interfering with the data stream in some way (like a firewall). Any other programs or features of the wireless router that might do that?

I looked in the registry and I found
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JRiver\Music01 Server\  ... but there is no TiVoDebug line
only TiVo, Tivoformatconversion, tivoformatconversionbitrate and tivosorting

What do you mean by adding a DWORD?

Warning: messing with the registry can cause severe problems.

You need to add a DWORD value with the name TiVoDebug along with the other TiVO* values.

edit->new->dword value.
Type in the correct name.
Then double click on the new value and change it to 1.

It looks like everything is fine on Media Server's side. So something is probably corrupting the data as it is being sent to TiVo.

I'm suspicious of the firewall. Can you remove it (just to test if it is a problem). I have seen cases in the past where disabling a firewall did not actually disable it.

Does the TiVo desktop work?

I see that theguyyo had similar problems with his TiVo, (see below) but the thread just ends.  Do you know if he was able to find a solution?

Started by theguyyo, Message by theguyyo
Ok, so here is the problem:

I just installed JRiver Media Center and am using the Media Server. WOW! I am impressed, however I keep getting errors on my TiVo. Specificaly Error 1-5-6 and Error 3-5-6. Sometimes it pops up when trying to access songs, and sometimes it does it two or three songs into a playlist. Sometimes it runs for hours and then it happens. I can't seem to duplicate it at any particular time in the process. Any ideas what is going on or how to fix it. I am really frustrated.

The actual error that I am getting is:

An unexpected error occured while accessing the server. (Error#3-5-6)

I am about to pull my hair out! TiVo Customer Care says that they don't even know what that error means.

Let me also give you this information:

I am running a wired network with a Linksys NR041 Network Everywhere Router, a cable modem, and I have a Linksys USB200M USB ethernet adapter on my TiVo. I am also running ZoneAlarm Pro on my PC.

Any help that you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

We'll try a different approach. Switch Media Server to a different port (say 81),
and then in TiVo optoins, check "Support TiVo HMO on port 80". On the TiVo you'll probably have to enter the IP address by hand, and you must wait for a couple of minutes before TiVo recognizes the server. Then try to play a song. Let me know what happens.

I switched the Media Server to a different port 81 (media server -> options-> Network -> manually port selection and I enertered 81).  Then on Media server TiVo HMO clicked "support tivo hmo on port 80.  Tivo now did not even recognize the media server.  I manually entered the IP address of my LAN 200.168.0.1 but Tivo still unable to recognize the new address or the media server.  I am still able to play song through the Tivo Media server however.  Did I do something wrong?

I don't know - you do have to wait a minute or three before the TiVo will recognize it, it's not immediate. Did you let it sit for a while?

I'm kind of stuck. There's a different approach: lots of people are using a similar configuration without problem. What is different about yours? Anything I might have overlooked in what you typed or maybe you didn't tell us?

I am running widows XP, have a dlink wireless router (DI-624), am using linksys USB wireless adapter on the TiVo.  There is no problem streaming the media from the TiVo server on my desktop.  But am unable to acess the MC cerver.  Sometimes am able to get to various points on the TiVo menu from media center (ie playlists), but am never able to play a song.   Keep getting error 3-5-6.

I've got a couple of suggestions:

Use a network sniffer and trace the packets between the TiVo and Media Server. You must sniff them off the wireless network, not off the machine that is running Media Server. Post them here and I'll try to figure out what's going on.

Find a friend with a wireless network (and preferrably Media Server and TiVo as well), and try the various pieces of your setup at his house. Try to narrow it down to a single piece causing failure (i.e. try your server and your TiVo with his wireless AP, then try
his server and his wireless AP with your TiVo etc.).

Is there a reason you can think of the the media center service is not working a Tivo server is?  Also is it possible to run media server without the tivo server?

No idea on why TiVo server works and Media Server doesn't.

I use ethereal, but it runs on linux.

You don't need the TiVo server running to use Media Server, but shut it down with the control panel, not with the kill task window.

Also make sure you have the latest version.

Okay, I'll toss in that I am having the same issue.  Here's a couple of things I did see that  hadn't been mentioned before.

I am able to play the first song in the playlist - error 3-5-6 seems to crop up when I try to navigate through the list of songs.  In this case, for example, I am able to play "Weird Al" since the quotes make him first in the list, but if I try to navigate to Queen, it dies.  I can also run shuffle play which seems to work fine - no 3-5-6 errors yet.

I have the debug flag on if you'd like my listing.  Since I am able to play songs without interruption, I'm thinking we're having some sort of problem with malformed XML in the request for the list of Artists.

How are you navigating to Queen? With the channel-up button?

Umm, I'm sure there's a joke to be made, but I can't think of it.

Yes, using the channel button.

Below is what I see in the Media Center Server Information box on start up does this shed any light on the Error 3-5-6 issue?  Seems like there was a problem with the TiVo Beacon listener which failed.  Is this beacon part of MC or TiVo software?

05/30/04 14:46:46 - Initializing server.

Interesting. The beacon you are seeing there is JRiver's replacement for the TiVo Beacon.

Try using TiVo's beacon (go to control panel->administrative tools->services and start the
TiVo Connect beacon. Shut down Media Server first). Let me know if that helps.

The TiVo connect beacon was already turned on.  It startup type is set to automatic.  I do not see any J River or Media Center Software on the services of the control panel.  Even though the MC server icon is visible in the system tray (?) on the bottom left of the screen.

Still no luck, I am getting the same error 3-5-6.  TiVo recognizes the Media Center Software, and I am able to see the albums, and even choose an album, but this is the farthest that I am able to get to without getting the error, sometimes I get it even sooner, even after choosing the media center on the tivo screen.

I have a new version, it should be out in a few days. I'll post here when it's available.
It might fix this problem.

Hi y'all.

I'm still getting the same 1-5-6/3-5-6 error.

I'm using Media Center  10.0.155 and Media Server 10.0.198

I have Windows 2000.  I'm using ZoneAlarm as a firewall.  I have a Belkin router/hub.  This also happened with my old Netlink router.

I can see the server via TiVo and I can play a song or two, but inevitably it dies with a 1-5-6/3-5-6 error.  I've had absolutely no luck fixing this.  I've had this under version 9 and version 10.  I've tried everything listed on this thread.

Here is the (partial) extended debug of the latest bombout.

08/28/04 10:57:33 - sharer starting
08/28/04 11:09:58 - TiVo HTTP: received a connection
08/28/04 11:09:59 - TiVo HTTP: ready for another connection
08/28/04 11:09:59 - unknown header <TiVo_TCD_ID>
08/28/04 11:09:59 - unknown header <TiVo_SW_VER>
08/28/04 11:09:59 - Request: </TiVoConnect?Command=QueryContainer&Container=%2fmusic%2fPlaylists%5cFamily&Recurse=Yes&Filter=audio%2F*&SortOrder=Random&RandomSeed=1093705208&AnchorItem=%2FTiVoConnect%2Fmusic%2F806&ItemCount=1&Format=text%2Fxml>
08/28/04 11:09:59 - TiVo HTTP: received a connection
08/28/04 11:09:59 - TiVo HTTP: ready for another connection
08/28/04 11:09:59 - unknown header <TiVo_TCD_ID>
08/28/04 11:09:59 - unknown header <TiVo_SW_VER>
08/28/04 11:09:59 - Request: </TiVoConnect/music/2019>
08/28/04 11:09:59 - TiVo streaming F:\My Music\Pink Floyd\The Wall (2 of 2)\Is There Anybody Out There_.mp3
08/28/04 11:12:39 - TiVo HTTP: received a connection
08/28/04 11:12:39 - TiVo HTTP: ready for another connection
08/28/04 11:12:39 - unknown header <TiVo_TCD_ID>
08/28/04 11:12:39 - unknown header <TiVo_SW_VER>
08/28/04 11:12:39 - Request: </TiVoConnect?Command=QueryContainer&Container=%2fmusic%2fPlaylists%5cFamily&Recurse=Yes&Filter=audio%2F*&SortOrder=Random&RandomSeed=1093705208&AnchorItem=%2FTiVoConnect%2Fmusic%2F2019&ItemCount=1&Format=text%2Fxml>

I started trying to play music.  It took two or three tries to actually navigate to my playlist.  Once I got there I got it to play.  I skipped the first song and got to hear three songs before it crapped out with a 1-5-6 error.  This is more or less standard.  I actually have two TiVos and they both behave this way, so I'm inclined to think it is an error in communication between the TiVo and the server.

I'm about at my wit's end.  If I cannot get this resolved, I'm just gonna give up on MJ.  Other than the TiVo thing, MJ does nothing I cannot do with iTunes, and the TiVo thing isn't working.

Hopefully you can help me.

I'm still not sure what I did to get it working, but it involved a clean reinstall of Windows XP pro and Mediacenter, I also switched to ZoneAlarm for firewall instead of McAcfee and then AVG for my antivirus program.  The router stayed the same.  D-LInk. Good luck.  It was a major pain, but solved the problem.

Good luck

Any ideas anyone besides a clean install?  I'm REALLY not keen on doing that.
