Wireless network problems...
« on: September 19, 2004, 08:42:43 am »

My server and my laptop both connect wirelessly to a an adsl modem / router.  The only time I can find the MC server is when my Laptop jumps the router and goes directly to my server's wireless nic which is USB connected to the server.  Any ideas why it isn't getting through the hub to the server, and what I might look at changing?  The firewall on the router is enabled, but I am able to print, share files, etc with the server normally.

I am using XP SP2 on both ends.  The devices are all Linksys.

Check the IP address that the server thinks it's on.

Then in Windows on the PC running the server, use Start/Run/command and enter "ipconfig".  Does the IP address of the PC match the one the server thinks it's on?

If that looks OK, make sure the port that the server is on is passed correctly through your router.   Check the router setup for this.

If you mean that the "Find Media Servers" is not finding the server, try entering the IP address by hand. Routers don't pass the UDP broadcast packets used to find the media servers.
