Misc problems with MC11 Solved
« on: October 18, 2004, 10:32:39 am »

MC is not handling 'bad' audio files with any finesse, but instead crashes hard with no warning, error message, and without indicating which files are causing the problem.

Also, some files can be played but not tagged.

You may have another problem.  Please see this thread:

Thanks for pointing that out to me Jim, but none of those appear to be the issue.
I know you do not want to hear this, but IMHO MC corrupted some files due to failed tag change or file rename saves.
I am sure whatever it is will surface elsewhere.

Splitting this out so you can discuss it, get advice from others...

You've had a couple other problems lately that make me wonder if you have a virus or hardware problems.  Here's one:

I've had a couple of corrupt file problems converting WAV to MP3 - the most recent on Sunday when MC11 thought the resulting file was an MPEG video file. No other program could recognise it at all.

Correct there Jim, I have had other problem.

Please note however, that there all regarded the Import, tagging, renaming of files within MC and the result being;
A) lost files,
B) files left unchanged (although initially shown as changed in MC before a refresh),
C) files becomming corrupted (and resulting in MC crashing upon further handling of these files),
D) missing files later reappearing (in some cases after being re-ripped or re-downloaded showing up as duplicates to the new file)
E) all of the above.

Please recall that I had issues of this sort back in MC9 and/or MC10, which later became reported by others and then 'fixed' in a later build.
While that does not indicate the same will occurr, it may.

No, I'm sorry.  I don't remember that.

In any case, a file can be corrupted by any number of causes.  Drive errors, for example, memory errors, encoders, viruses, other programs, etc. etc.

If it's an MC problem, we should be seeing a pattern of similar reports.  I don't see it (at this time).

I certainly cannot argue with that logic.  I will keep on keepin on and letcha know if I discover the cause or remedy. In the meantime, that's the great thing about Interact, if someone else has the same or similar issue they too will let us know.

Possible clue:

file name length . . . .

Various Artists, Classic - Best of Classical Violin (3 CD Set) - 20 - Symphonie Concertante Pour Violon, Alto Et Orchestre En Mi Bémol Majeur, K.364 - Allegro Maestoso (Mozart) - (230 kbs)

Too long? Could this do it?

Sounds very much like a memory problem.  I would strongly suggest running MemTest86 (free) on your system ( http://www.memtest86.com/ ).  If there is a memory problem, it will most likely find it.

Thanx Paul, but that is not it either.
I believe I can safely say what the underlying issue was . . .
nope not my system,
not the OS,
nope not plugins either,
Media Center you say . . .well, No!
Not really anyway . . . it was a filenale length violation.
The clue came yesterday when I said Tchaichovsky . . . . classical music = long names . . . especially if you add movements, keys, etc. into the tags which formulate the names.  Until now I had not used MC with classical so had not encountered this issue sooner.
As soon as I shortened the names in windows, MC was once again able to handle the files without crashing.

Now, about it being a MC issue or not . . .  partially it is, sort of indirectly anyway.
MC did apply the names from the tags which created the 'illegal' filename. So it may be a windows error, but MC was an accomplace.
