Windows blue screening when MC rips
« on: January 31, 2005, 12:56:35 am »

MC ver: 10 (.?.? - must be latest, because "check for updates" doesn't find anything.)
OS: Win 2K Adv. Server
LMK what else you need to know.

Seems to happen in the same spots on certain CDs.
I'm going to try setting up MC on another machine and seeing if the CD will rip OK there.

A blue screen is usually a hardware problem.

Yeah, that occurred to me, too, Jim. I'm pretty savvy when it comes to hardware. Mind you, this is a server, and it's given me no problems except for ripping CDs. This has been going on for a while; here's what I've done so far to try to run this problem down...

1. Run MemTest for an extended period of time (while out of town on vacation for a long weekend) - no errors
2. Run benchmark tests in looped mode - no problems
3. Run extensive hard drive diagnostics - one drive looked suspicious and it was the drive that was being used for the paging file. I replaced it.

But I'm still having the problem.

I'll take a look at those, but meanwhile, here's some additional info:

I have a machine that's been sitting idle for a while. I fired it up. It had MC 9.1 on it. The CD rips fine there. The files are written over the LAN to a mapped drive on the server (so they're ending up in the same place.) The server did not blue screen during the writes, so I'm eliminating the destination drive/controller as a possible culprit.

Turns out, though, that the track that was being ripped (when the server as blue screening) required approximately a dozen re-reads during the rip. So I'm guessing that this is re-read related.

I'm going to install EAC and see if it blue screens when ripping the same CD. I'll also see if maybe there's a firmware update for my DVD-RW drive.

Will keep you posted.

Here's the latest:

Downloaded latest firmware and ran upgrade. Still blue screening.

Installed EAC and ripped same CD - works fine!

I think that pretty much eliminates hardware issues. Suggestions?

I don't think you can say that it eliminates hardware issues.  Take a look at the second thread I mentioned.  It's common that a hardware bug surfaces with one application and not another.

There Was A Bug Once In MC9 That When You Attempt To Rip Some CD's That Were the "Enhanced" Type (of some sort) That MC Would Crash.

I Thought That That Was Fixed However.

I Can't Remember If It Would Render A Blue Screen Or Not.

I Remember This Because I Had 30 CD's MC Would Crash On. They Did Fix It And I Was Able To Rip The 30 Or So CD's I Had. The Point In All This Was To Update Yadb With The Correct Info For All The Cd's I Have.

I *FINALLY* figured out what was causing this. Thought I'd post the answer just in case it might help somebody some day...

The problem was with "AnyDVD" from SlySoft - a great little utility that allows me to rip my LEGALLY PURCHASED CDs and DVDs to the hard drive of my media server. Anyway, when using it with Media Center, you have to go into the (AnyDVD) settings and check "Safe Mode". I just happened to stumble upon this on SlySoft's website. I made the change and have since ripped many CDs without blue-screening.
