MC 11 UPnP Server: Filter International Characters
« on: May 10, 2005, 02:50:56 am »

It occurred to me: is this just a case of not using URL-encoding for the international characters?

International characters certainly should work on the MP101 - they do with other servers.

But I'm pretty sure you can't just send them to the device as is, they need to be URL encoded - is that happening?

Perhaps that's the setting we need in the UPnP server rather than just filtering them out?

Hi Rob,

The international characters are not in the URL - that looks something like 1.2.3.4/173.mp3.

They are in the xml data for the song. While I've heard reports of some working, I was unable to reproduce that here, either with mine or other servers.

Netgear never posted a response, it might help if y'all chime in over there.

I don't think that contacting Netgear will help in this case. They will say that it is not their fault since MP101 is working with their server (which is crap IMO) as well as with others (like Twonkyvision's).

Here in austria, international characters like äöü wörk :) properly with Twonkyvision and do not work with MC Server.

Is the problem the international character in the filename or in the file tags??
If you cannot reproduce it, may I send you somehow one of my MP3s causing problems?

The problem is with the meta data - song title, artist etc. I'm pretty sure the device never sees the file name.

You might be surprised how well manufacturers respond if they get a few requests. I'm just asking them for info (what character sets are supported), not claiming a bug or anything else. so if a few people chip in, we might get a response.

OK, i'll ask for this as well. Let's see if we get a respond (although Netgear support is said to be VERY bad)

I certainly agree that I don't think it's worth asking them.

They've got a very bad reputation for not responding on things that are very clearly their fault - or we probably wouldn't care so much about having MC as our replacement server software :-)

Doesn't MC even include the directory name in the URL then?

For me, it certainly seems to crash when I browse into a part of the tree that has international characters in it, not when I actually try to play a track. I don't seem to get that far...

No, the file location (including directory path) doesn't show up, for files or for containers.

The behavior I saw was the MP101 refusing to play songs with international characters in the artist.

What exactly is happening for you?

Well, I have some artists and albums that have international characters in the name, not just tracks, so maybe that's the difference?

I'll have to do some more testing to make sure...

On of my view shemes is named "Hörspiel", I have to rename it to "Hoerspiel" when I disable filtering of international characters. Otherwise I cannot browse the "Audio folder" of MC.

With regard to album names, it's the same here like Rob L described it.
