Playlist issue with DSM-320
« on: May 26, 2005, 08:15:16 am »

I am a new MC11 user and am impressed so far.

I have MC11 running on Win2k Server and I am using a DSM-320 (FW:1.05) I purchased yesterday. I have tried D-Link's Media Server, Win Media Connect and TwonkyVision, so I have a feel for UPnP and media serving.

Everything seems to work well with MC11 until I access a playlist on the 320:

1. On a music-only playlist, only the first song plays. It never goes to the next song. This is painful.

2. I tried mixing video and music on the same playlist. Only the first item plays; it does not move to the next item in the list. Also, if it is playing a piece of music and the next item is a video, I get the 'unsupported format' error. If I click ok and try the video again it works. If MC11 was not intended to support multiple media formats in the same playlist, that's fine. It was an experiment.

Otherwise, no compliants.

Thanks!

Try using the play button instead of the enter button, this should go to the next track.

The mixed video/music is a limitation of the device. I wish there were devices that could do both at the same time, but so far I haven't found one.

I have a another issue with playlists on the DSM 320. I have around 10,000 songs loaded in MC.
When I hit playlists on DSM 320 it seems to hit a certain timeout since I get a timeout "folder not found", because MC takes to long to render those songs within playlists.
If I remove all songs from MC the Media Receiver is able to show the playlist folder within a seconds on the Media Receiver, as soon as I load all my songs again I keep getting this error again: Folder not found.

It really seems that is has to do with the fact that MC is trying to render the list of songs for its parent playlists, which just takes too long.

Could this be fixed by for example only generating the list of playlists, and not trying to find all songs within the playlists ...

Thanks

That's really a problem that Dlink needs to look at, but you could work around it by setting up a different library to share, with fewer files or less complex playlists.

Try the "Skip Child Count". If this doesn't work, try making playlist folders, and grouping your playlists into folders. This should make it so that you can click on Playlists without timing out...

Skipping Child Count fixes the problem! Now the playlists all come back! And the browsing through the Audio Tabs is now really Snappy! Very good.

But still... it still seems  inefficient when the playlist group is generated for the Media Receivers... here is why:

Imageine my Playlist Hierarchy:
-Playlists
|-- Media Receiver Playlists (PL group)
    |- Smart Playlist 1.1
    |- Smart Playlist 2.1
    |- Smart Playlist ... 2.30
    |- Album Playlist (PL group)
             |- Smart Playlist 2.1
             |- Smart Playlist 2.2
|- Smart Playlist 0.1
|- Smart Playlist 0.2
|- Smart Playlist 0.3

To get back the first playlist group it now takes 0.5 seconds where before (Without Skip Child count turned off) I got the error mentioned above! So this is good! But when I get into the "Media Receiver Playlists"  group it takes over 10 seconds : I noticed if I put my Media Receiver Playlists group into a Playlist Scheme and I access this on the DSM 320 through the Audio Tab. It generates me the list of playlist within within one second.

So I still think Media Center is doing something very ineffcient when generating the list of playlists ... It seems to be the same amount of time it takes as if I click on the parent playlist folder within Media Center. During this time Media Center is generating the list of all songs that are accessed through all the children playlists ... I think Media Center is doing the same thing when it renders the list of playlists for the Media Receivers ... maybe this could be turned off?

Thanks

It's inefficient, but actually MC does what it's told. The protocol wasn't designed with a case like this in mind. As long as you break the groups up, life should be okay.
