View album thumbnials AND select tracks for playlists?
« on: October 26, 2005, 08:09:13 am »

I am a total newbie . . which usually means I am missing something very obvious here. Anyway : -

I want to select some Beatles songs for a playlist. I click in the Genre pane on 'pop', then the Artists pane on 'Beatles' and then admire all the pretty Beatles album covers displayed before me. But now I want to select individual tracks from one of the album thumbnails and I am stuck. I can change the view from 'album thumbnails' to 'details' and see the tracks listed but now the thumbnails have gone! So I try to add another viewing pane but find I am unable to add one showing the 'details' view (the individual tracks), in addition to the album thumbnails.

So my question is . . .how can i see all the album thumbnails for an artist (or genre) AND see tracks for the highlighted album for dragging to a Playlist? I see there is a 'mouseover' pop-up of the tracks on the thumbnails but that doesnt help me create a playlist.

Are you using the Action Window to make a playlist?

You can toggle the view between details (tracks) and cover art by using CTRL-U or the View menu.

At any time, you can right click a track or tracks and add to a playlist.

I always do locate > on disk(inside medaicenter).  Kind of cumbersome as the command is nested and you have to hit the back button on your toolbar to get back.  It can also be slow if you haven't used it in a while.

I would like to see a pop up like the tool tips that allows you to select the tracks.
Assuming htere isn't some huge performance hit, this would be rad.

I have the icons in the toolbar that allow a quick switch between Album Thumbnails & Automatic but MC should allow a toggle so that when viewing all album thumbnails (1000+) you can simply highlight one album cover and have all panes point (Genre>Artist>ALbum>Names!) so you can simply and easily (w/o Locate Internally or hitting the icon in the toolbar) see the tracks on that album. The albumview plugin allows this type of behavior. MC12 should consider it.

I am wondering if Jim and company realise that the album thumbnail browsing is one of the best things going for MC yet it is only half as usefull as it could be since picking tracks from an albums is cumbersome and time consuming especially with doing CTRL-U which really does not work when you have hundreds of albums in a view.

I think if they can create a dynamic 'window' of some sorts that can display tracks which can be individually selected and chosen to do somehting with, that woudl truly change how people browse thier music.

The library browser is neat but not really usefull because its not streamlined for finding your favorite music fast.  It is cool for others who don't know what is in my library but it is not usefull to me.  Album thumbnails are the way to go, its just difficult to select indidvidual tracks!

yes media center. Please oh please add this feature. In album view you can make it so you right click on album and choose "view tracks" this would show only the tracks from that album. i'VE WANTED THIS FOR YEARS  ;)

Glad to see all this interest, like the rest of you, I posted re: this feature quite a while ago.

Do you folks think a toggle would be the be the answer? To change the pane behavior to "point" directly to whatever album is highlighted.

What about an action window that you could toggle on and off similar to album view? It could open up in the action window area when you simply highlight an album thumbnail.

Maybe we should share some screenshots of setups to spur ideas that would encompass all styles of Mc setups.

I started this post before I saw yor original thread Alex . . apologies. Seems we want the same thing.
I thought I had worked it out when i saw the option to add the 'Names' field as a pane, however this just gives me ALL the tracks in the current view with a highlighted tickbox for the current album.

Cover art is how I intuitively 'recognise' my music. I have been looking at CD covers for the last 20 years, and vinyl covers for the 10 years before that. Anyone who has spent more than 5 minutes in a record store will know the feeling of fanning rapidly through racks of CDs. 1,000s of covers are burned into my memory. A text list is soul-less and might as well be an exel sheet.

IMHO a toggle is NOT acceptable. The ability to display album thumbnails is the single and most brilliant feature that attracts me to MC over iTunes. To have to turn the thumbnails OFF and revert to a list view (Ctrl + U) in order to see the tracks and create a playlist from any particular album, is madness beyond my comprehension! MC has a plethora of subtle and advanced functionality, 99% of which I will never use.

I will immediately purchase the first application to give me a page full of thumbnails of my cover art, and a simple tracklist of the currently highlighted thumbnail beside, above or below. I am watching MC, MediaMonkey and iTunes with great interest. The first ones to crack this simple issue will totally dominate the market.

I agree that a toggle isn't acceptable, the CTRL+U manuvuer, I meant if there was a toggle to change the behavior of the Name pane so that it would display the tracks of the currently highlight Album Thumbnail>>>INSTEAD of what it currently does....which is highlight the tracks with red tracks wherever they may lie in a huge list.

I would think that if I hover over any cover art a popup with its tracks should open next to it and allow me to play all or any tracks.

That would be perfect.
