Multi-threaded encoding
« on: August 28, 2002, 11:56:04 am »

2 Questions for JRiver:

Why was multi-threaded encoding removed from MJ? (ie encoding in a separate thread, while ripping continued)

Will I need to wait until v9 to get that back, or will it never be implemented?

Signed, Curious.

Unless you have multiple CPU's, simultaneous rip |PLS| encode is much faster.  And most encoders support it... (LAME, OGG, APE, etc.)

Please mail all extra CPU's to:

Just for testing, of course.

Well Dodged!

If this programming thing ever dries up, I'll try politics

And for a real answer, well, we don't have one.  I guess we didn't think anybody would miss it, and lots of unused features and options aren't a good thing.  Does anybody else want that mode back?

I'll add another vote for the return of multithreading and multiple encoder instances.

I did not have Sex with that encoder

Mr.X

get your self a copy of GoGo and then use that with the external encoder option.

Gogo Suported Dual CPU's and should be suported as An External Encoder.

Gogo is based on an ealier version of LAME that had several problems and it doesn't support most of LAME's options.

It also doesn't address the issue because it's not running in parallel with the rip.  That means that while ripping, the CPU(s) are entirely wasted.

KingSparta:

I do use Gogo (v3.10, uses LAME 3.88) and it's lightning fast. Unfortunately, at some point JRiver decided to change the action of the external encoders so that they had to finish each encoding job before MJ would rip the next track. THAT previous functionality is what I would like to have back again.

If you use EAC with an external encoder, you'll see what I'm talking about.

I wonder how hard it would be to get them To Make Lame to support more than one CPU.

Have you asked them?

They do. It's called Gogo. Unfortunately, the people that wrote Gogo are in Japan or Taiwan or something, and don't have much of a web site.

If you wanted to have a crack at it, updating it to use the latest LAME, the source code for Gogo is available...
