MC Crashes
« on: May 22, 2007, 05:36:03 am »

Hi there.

I installed updated firmware for my Zen Micro.  Ever since then MC crashes about 10 seconds after it starts.  Upon restart of the program, I get the MC window re abnormal shutdown/backup your library.  So I backed up my library, uninstalled and reinstalled MC.  During the restart of my computer, I got a message that MC had crashed (can't remeber if this was a MC or Microsoft window).  Anyway, I had not started the program yet, but I got a message that it had crashed.  I then ran msconfig and turned off some misc. startup items (including Media Server b/c I'm not using TiVO anymore) and restarted.  Same problem MC crashes every time I launch the program.

Any advice?

Thanks.

Did you try the "Redect Devices" option?  Under handhelds in MC options.

First time caller - long time listener...

For those that want to skip ahead:

1 - History of usage
2 - Current situation
3 - System configuration
4 - I'm having the same problem(s)...

===
1
===

I've had a long time admiration for MC and have been a paying customer for "I can't remember how long"...

I've ripped and stored hundreds of CD's using MC and have always found it to be a capable repository.

Until recently...

===

===

I'm what I would call a "music appreciation" person - not quite an audiophile since I don't believe I've ever experienced a "sound stage" when listening to music.  I'm a pianist and have a pretty good ear but I just fall in the category of people who love ALL kinds of music and appreciate quality -- not necessarily perfect -- sound.

I'm about to engage in some "whole house" renovations which will involve my wife moving out of the house for a couple of months and myself (and the dogs) living in the basement during the work (a long story I won't trouble you with).  At any rate, I've decided to map out a few projects to occupy the time and formally "cleaning up the network" has risen to the top of the heap.

While in the past I have dabbled with most audio formats (MP3,FLAC,Ape, etc) I have always felt that once I had time I would create the "final archive" of all audio in native WAVE since 1.  I believe in buying the products of artists I enjoy and 2. Storage space is rediculusly inexpensive (ask me about my first hard drive some day!).  That day has now come and I intend to create the master archive over the next few months.  The real objective is to get through the CD collection so that I can focus on migrating the RECORDS to a digital future.  [for kids, RECORDS are those round, black, vinyl objects the old people used to buy and listen to...]

Enter MC 12.  I was very excited about reporting my experience with MC12 when I began indexing EVERY SINGLE PIECE of media across my network yesterday.  That was until I hit 30,000 or more items and the software began to crash repeatedly.  I HAVE searched/and/read the various threads that touch on the topic of my specific error messages and have not been able to stop the madness.

The house is fairly media friendly.

I have a hardwired (CAT6/Gigabit) network throughout.

I use SlimDevices in multiple locations running SlimServer on a dedicated PC.

The stereo system is Yamaha's best receiver (#2 if you count the $9,000 thing that I would never buy) and PSB speakers (matched IMAGE components not the Stratus line...) along with various other components that all seem to work.

The computers (with the exception of one WindowsServer2000 box) all run current configurations of Windows XP Pro.  There are approximately 5 computers online at any given time although the number flucuates as I build and tinker as a hobby.  The network is supported by a cable (Cogeco) feed to the internet and most of the hardware is fairly current.

I am constantly getting an error message in a window that's titled:

"Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library"

and reads:

--------------
Runtime Error !

Program:  ..\Media Center 12.exe

This application has requested the Runtime
to terminate it in an unusual way.  Please
contact the application's support team for
more information.

"OK"
--------------

I've quit trying to catalog the C: drive - that helped for a bit.
I've not quite understood the network discussion that's taken place in earlier threads.
The system simply craps out when I try to rip a CD.

What am I missing and what can I do to find and correct whatever is wrong?

/ Again -- I'm new to the board but a long time user and fan
/ Thanks to anyone who can address the issues in this thread

Welcome Mark and thanks for your story.

Possibly your problem has nothing to do with the OP's problem (I am not sure if LaneNem means that the crash happens only when the Zen Micro is connected).

Do you have two different problems? A crash problem when importing files and a separate ripping problem?

The import problem may be caused by one or more corrupted or otherwise invalid files.

For helping others to help you could do the following:

Try to reliably reproduce a certain chain of actions that always make the crash happen.

After that enable debug logging in the help menu and reproduce the crash. Post a step by step description of what you did and the last lines of the log file here. Possibly someone from JRiver will give you an email adress for mailing the complete log.

Also, post your system info from the Help menu.

EDIT

Did you already try to reinstall MC12 and are you using the latest build?

We're not sure what's causing this, but could you try these?

1.  First see if the crash still happens if all portable devices, USB drives, memory cards, etc are removed.

2.  Then try this build: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=40705.0

Thanx Alex for your quick reply...

Having worked as a product manager for a major software producer, I'm not beyond believing in luck.

Since writing my "story" this morning I've had no additional crashes (!)

Having worked (professionally) with computers for over 20 years, I know what it means to "chase the bugs" and I will try to reproduce errors in the future as you suggest (including the SystemINFO data -- thanx for that)...

I suppose I was hoping that this might be one of those situations where there was enough experience for someone to say:

Given X, try doing A, B, C etc. to isolate or eliminate the problem.

On the other hand -- as a loyal user -- I'm happier believing these are anomalies which are less frequent and less understood than I would be if everyone had suddenly chimed in with "that happens to us all the time -- get over it (!)"

I've got small ambitions -- just trying to get in the habbit of ripping/archiving/validating 5 to 10 CD's a day (for life?) to avoid the prospect of ever having to "do it again" ONE LAST TIME.  At any rate, if you're still reading, how about some feedback on the overall strategy ?  I'm currently ripping to WMA/LossLess and then converting (with changes to DB and No Change to Files) in order to arrive at a MC Library of all Waves (with tag info) and a separate collection of WMA for backup in case ANYTHING happens to the master files...

/ Thoughts ?

/ Thanks again -- I mean it !

In my opinion lossless is better than wave. It is smaller and can include track info in the tags. With wave files you can have track info only in the database. I would just keep backup copies of the same lossless files.

However, it would be better to keep threads on topic. This thread would be a good place for further discussion: Topic: How can I ensure quality of a ripped music file

I downloaded and installed 12.0.237.  I have the same problem -- MC crashes within 20 secs of being launched.  This occurs with the handheld plugged in or without.  ?

Try 12.0.239 on this board, but also try re-installing your license.

Double check that all handhelds and USB drives are removed.  Uninstall any third party plug-ins.

I installed x.239.  Same problem.  Crashes w/in 20 seconds.  3rd party plugins are all disabled and handhelds are disconnected.

Thanks.

Please copy your system info from MC Help and paste it here.

If it's Vista, try this hotfix:

My system info is pasted above; everything is the same except the MC build.  It's now x.239.

I'm using XP Pro.

Thanks.

I have a friend who has MC12 installed and is having a very similar issue (MC suddenly crashes 30 seconds or so after launching) that I've been helping out, but haven't been able to figure out a solution.  I have a log file including one of the crashes.  Who should I email it to?

I did try un/re-installing.  I did not try re-installing the license, but I can if that is a worthwhile effort.  She does not have any handheld devices, nor any third party plugins other than the FLAC decoder installed (I checked and it's scthom's latest version).  All her music is on a nice quality external USB2 drive that does run at USB2 speeds.  The library data is stored on C.

I did a system restore and installed v. 240.  I have the same problem, MC crashes about 20 seconds after it launches.  Is there any other information I conuld pass along that might help?

AppName: media center 12.exe    AppVer: 12.0.240.0    ModName: ntdll.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180    Offset: 00031c6b

I have the same problem with MC crashing when I connect a Creative Zen V Plus (with the latest firmware) to my computer. I've tried all of the suggestions in this this thread with both build 12.0.233 and 12.0.240, but none of them works for me. This problem first occured last week, but I found the following solution:
  • Format the Zen
  • Uninstall MC completely, including the Library
  • Install MC Build 12.0.233
  • Rebuild the library from scratch, and do *NOT* restore a library backup.

This seemed to work fine for some time, but this morning after updating a playlist with some new podcasts, MC couldn't synchronize with the Zen (the progress bar wasn't showing any progress at all). I checked the Hanheld Options and they seemd OK, but after I disconnected the player from my computer, I saw that all tracks that were not on my podcast playlist were removed from the player (I have "Delete from hanheld any tracks not in sync list" enabled). I reconnected the Zen to my computer to resync the deleted tracks, but then MC startet crashing after about 15 seconds again.

Now I've followed the steps above one more time, and MC seems to be working again. This process is very time consuming, so I hope it can be fixed soon.

I solved the MC 12 crashing issue.

MC was confirgured to run during startup.  It was crashing before the app was launched.

I ran msconfig and changed MC to NOT begin at startup.  No more crashes.  Unfortunately I completely uninstalled my libraries etc. (like joaroyen) before stumbling on this remedy.  Again, MC 12.x was failing b/c it was configured to run at startup.

Thanks.

My solution didn't last for long, because now MC (v12.0.233 and v12.0.240) is crashing on me again. I'm not sure if this is the cause this time, but MC crashed when I plugged in a Windows Mobile 5 device ("USB to PC" is configured with "Enable advanced network functionality"). I'm not running MC at startup so LaneNem's suggestion doesn't change any thing for me.

I've been trying a lot of different combinations in the last couple of hours, and I actually could connect to my Zen three times in about 25 tries. The weird thing is that I cannot reproduce these successes, because I'm not seeing any logic to why it works some times.  ?

The first time it worked I manually uploaded a file by using Creatives Zen Windows Explorer extension, before starting Media Center. The next time I removed the CD/DVD-drive from my Laptop, because I saw some Media Center log entries which indicated that it tried to acess the CD-drive when MC crassed. The last time it was pure luck because I kept restarting MC and reconnecting the Zen over and over and it worked for a single time.

I've been going through all forum posts about this issue, but I'm not having any luck so I'm starting to think about moving back to Windows Media Player. Before I do that however I wonder if there's any better way to debugg this crash than trial and error? I didn't find any error message in the log, but I can provide that if you want. I can also attach Visual Studio to the MC-process and give you the call stack with disassembly information when the unhandeled exception is thrown. (Fyi, this is the error message that I get after debugging the crash in Visual Studio:
"Unhandled exception at 0x7c931c6b (ntdll.dll) in Media Center 12.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation reading location 0x05a8ffff.")

If there's anything more I can do to help debugging this issue, please let me know.
