new iPods and hash
« on: September 14, 2007, 03:14:08 pm »

Here is an interesting article I read:

http://ipodminusitunes.blogspot.com/2007/09/apple-cuts-us-off.html

Looks like this may make it much harder to support the new iPods. I seriously hope that we all are able to reverse engineer the new hashing mechanism.

I read the article and it is scary for MC's sake BUT the good news is that Sharepod 3.4 does see the database, and I was able to copy tracks off the Ipod classic to my hard drive, so at least that still seems to work...

I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

? as I mentioned I was able to copy tracks OFF the ipod with Sharepod so that still works.

However, I did do an "edit tag" in Sharepod but cancelled, and when I started Itunes it did give me an error saying it could not read the Ipod, and told me to restore, and when I looked at the Ipod itself, it had no music.

Instead I started Sharepod again, and it could see all the tracks. I then did a restore of the backup Sharepod had done and that seems to have fixed Itunes it now recognizes the ipod along with all the tracks.

So it does look like progams like Sharepod alter the database if it writes back to it at all so that the ipod no longer sees that data.

Suppose we added a way to install the Rockbox OS on iPods and then built on top of that.  Would that work?

It could be a more beautiful open iPod world then.

Yes, I was thinking about the exact same thing today. BUt, rockbox wasn't available on iPod Classic yet. I am sure it will be available soon (a week at max) given the track record of the rockbox guys.

And, this would give added benefit of having support for more file types.

thanks,

I agree, v interesting indeed. I'm sick of Apple's bungled attempts at making me use iTunes or even *gasp* buy a Mac.

Brilliant idea.
