This MS page has DV samples in case you would like try if files from another source make any difference. The big "source" files are more or less in standard DV avi format.

I tried a few of the PAL source files - they all played OK - video but no sound (don't think there was any sound channel in the files).

Gspot identified no codecs required to run these files - so I'm not sure what its proved.

Also in case this provides any clues:  I ripped the DVD I made several posts back (the one made from a problem file that plays fine on my DVD player).  The video plays perfectly in MC but NO audio (not even really bad attempts).

Check your DirectShow settings.  Tools/Options/Playback/Video

I'd say try unregistering that filter.  It's obviously not working.  To do this, you'll first need to find out where the filter is, which it sounds like you've already done.

So, to unregister it, go to Start --> Run and type in the box exactly this (but replace the path to the file with the correct one):

regsvr32.exe /U "c:\path\to\the\stupid\filter\ewadueff.dll"

You should get a confirmation saying “DllUnRegisterServer in c:\path\to\the\stupid\filter\ewadueff.dll succeeded.”  If it says failed or anything else, let us know.  Then, for good measure, I'd also rename that file.  Find it, right-click on it and choose Rename.  Change the file extension to .bak or something like that (something other than DLL).

Then, give playing some files another shot.

I think the "evil" software you installed was that Video DVD Maker application.

OK - successfully unregistered the ewadueff.dll and renamed the file .bak

Checked the filters within MC they are now just set to J River Bitrate.

Gspot shows Panasonic DV video decoder and default directsound device - codecs present.

File playback is unchanged in MC !!!

This is the bit I find very weird:

I tried playing the files from MC running on my laptop using the source PC as a library server - files don't play. 

If I try to play the files by "opening with MC" on a shared folder on the source PC - files don't play

But, if I copy the same file to the laptop it plays fine.

I would have thought the codecs and filters being used were the same in both those cases.  What variables would affect the file playback whilst just physically residing on the source PC disk?

How were the two machines connected to one another?

DV is fairly high-bitrate, and might just be too much for your network subsystem.  Trying to use a wireless connection would be an almost definite no-no.

DV is 25Mbs so you have no chance with Wireless but it should play OK over a wired LAN (all mine do).  Did you post a sample of one of the files so we can see what filters load at our end?

I've pulled it off with Draft-N gear for short clips.

You're right about any reasonably competent wired network though (of course, then I switched to DVCPRO HD which is 100mbps and is another story entirely).

Don't you just love the wireless marketing - the average punter see 54/108/384Mb etc on the box and not unreasonably expects they should be able to stream their Video...nothing beats blue string IMHO!  Now I'd like to see you get those 100Mbps files going!

Odd - you should of been pulling at least 25% on the LAN.  Look forward to testing the file.

I just tested it and it worked fine, both locally and from a network drive.  Just to make sure, you did try re-registering quartz.dll correct?

I did re-register quartz.dll previously - just did it again for good measure and guess what - no change.   I guess I'll just have to come round to your house to watch my home videos.
