Newbie search problem mc 12.0.451 after update
« on: March 08, 2008, 10:26:32 am »

Hi folks,

I'm pretty new to media players and MC, but have been using MC for about 6 months.  I just updated to .451 today and find that the search is no longer working as it did with my previous version (mc 12.0.329).  After selecting audio and then the search drop down arrow I no longer get lists to pick from (i.e. artist, album, etc.).  This was function I used often to select keyword/s from the check box list and then further filter by rating (for one example).  I've looked everywhere to try to find some setting that is no longer on/off and I've looked through FAQ and the board here to no avail.  My apologies if I've missed the answer here and/or this is simply operator error on my part, but I'd sure appreciate any help you all could offer, I'm stumped at this point.  I used this part of the program constantly and really need to have it working again.  My system information from MC is here:

Not sure exactly what you mean.  Search is in the upper right corner.

If you mean in the tree, try clicking a second time on audio to open it up.

Thanks Jim -  I can access the audio files fine and what I'm guessing is refered to as the tree under audio on the upper left.  When I click the drop down arrow in search box, upper right side, (now after the update) I only get Wizard, text, paly results, clear, edit, and help as options.  Clicking the down arrow in the search box used to bring up a large variety of options to pick from: essentially the major categories / keywords like artists or albums etc. After choosing something like a particular artist I could then pick from other options in the search drop down like ratings for example.  Those lists and options are no longer there, I have to use the wizard to get to everything, which works fine, but is much slower.  I hope this helps - I'm not sure how else to explain; I'm probably not using the correct language for something/s -sorry about that, I'm just a bit new to the media player deal.  Thanks for your patience.

Is it not quicker to just select the library fields you want to be able to search once and for all? Tools - Options - Library & Folders - Standard Library Fields.
Here you go through all of them and remove "Default search field" for the ones you don't want to search and the oposit for the fields you want to be included in the search.

Now, instead of hitting search arrow and finding an artist, write the artist or parts of the name in the search field, along with other search criteria.
This is at least how I do it..

Kayt,

I took a look at the Search Wizard (its within the Wizard) and it seemingly allows all the drop down selections you want.  I don't use it that often, but it looks the same to me as it used to.

Learn the search keywords for your most used fields is probably quicker and easier in the long run...
At very least, it allows you more flexibility when typing in a search string directly.

ar=bob would return all artists with 'bob' anywhere in them
ar=[bob" would return all artists that begin with 'bob'
al=greatest would return all albums with 'greatest' anywhere in them
g=rock would return all tracks from the 'rock' genre
p=party would return all files from the 'party' playlist

if any given field does not have a keyword assigned, then give it one yourself. Go to "Tools - Options - Library & Folders" pick a field > edit field, add keyword.

Some that I've chosen here:
mt= for [media type]
ft= for [file type]
aaa= for [album artist (auto)]
aa= for [album artist]
fnp= for [filename (path)]
fnn= for [filename (name)]
lp= for [last played]
np= for [number plays]
kw= for [keywords]

after that, typing in your own searches is an absolute breeze compared to using the search wizard!!

Thanks so much to everyone - all the comments/suggestions quite helpful and very much appreciated.  And you're of course right, it will be faster in the long run to learn the command line approach for searching; time for me to use the program more effeciently for sure.  Mega thanks marko for all the detail and great tips, this will help so much!
