Failed to load the library 'Default'
« on: July 31, 2008, 07:17:47 am »

I cannot start MC.  Everytime I try it reports that it failed to load the default library.  What could cause this?  Is it looking for a specific file?

When I browsed to find C:\Documents and Settings\(User name)\Application Data\J River\Media Centr 12\Library, I found that the application data folder was missing/hidden.  I was able to get the folder to show and reset the computer but the same error message appears when I try to start MC.

It's normal that the folder is hidden by Windows.

Try a reboot.  Try a reinstall.

MC makes automatic backups of your library.  You can try a restore.

Thanks Jim-

I tried a reboot- no luck there.

I haven't done a reinstall before.  Do I have to backup any files beforehand?

By restore, do you mean reverting back to a previous library backup?  I recently moved many files to new locations and I'm afraid the last library might not have the new location tags.

Just reinstall.  It's too late to back up, but MC did automated backups.

To reinstall, do I have to uninstall (delete) MC and then re-install?

Can you walk me through this a bit?  I reinstalled (I think) from the link on the main JRiver page but the problem still exists.

Did you try restoring your library from one of your backups?

It's in MC under File/Library.

I can't restore that way because I can't start MC.  When I try to start, the program never loads but in task manager there is an "Error Loading Library" task listed.  When I end this task through Task Manager, a "Meddia Libraries" box appears briefly before automatically closing.

Uninstall and, when you do, choose the option to remove registry entries.

Then reinstall.

Did you remove the registry settings when you uninstalled?  Also the library files.  If you have to, use Explorer and do a search for the jmd files and remove them.  It sounds like the library is corrupt.  It's also possible that the location you have set in MC Options does not exist.

If that still doesn't work, I have no idea.  You could have a disk problem or something else non-MC related.

This seems to have worked.  I have to go through and set everything up all over again now and also re-import all of my media files.  This is going to take a while and king of sucks because it took me a while to get everything how I liked it, but at least it's working.  Thanks a for the help and quick responses Jim.

Now that you can get into MC, you may be able to use the File --> Library --> Restore Library tool to revert back to a backup.  Be sure to pick one a "few versions old" so you don't end up with another corrupt library.
