Missing Cover Art after Upgrade to MC14
« on: September 19, 2009, 10:25:57 am »

I recently upgraded to MC14 and now, I have a number of albums where the cover art is missing. MC14 copied the MC13 database when it installed. All of the cover art shows up fine in MC13 but many don't show up in MC14.

1) Is there a simple way to fix this?

2) I thought I had gone through and embedded all the art in the MP3 files, but clearly not. From MC13 (I assume), how do I batch update all MP3 files to embed the cover art?  I assume this is the easiest way to fix my problem.

TIA

Are you missing only the cached thumbnails in the library views or also the actual cover art that should show up in the main display in Playing Now during playback?

What does the Image File field show if you select a file that has lost its cover art?

Alex,

Thanks for the questions, that gave me some ideas. I added the "Image File" field to my view and noticed that a number of MP3s did not have the cover art inside "Inside File". Some were point to JPGs which did not appear to be copied by MC14 during the upgrade. I've now retrieved all the cover art for the files that were missing the embedded art and fix it for good!

Thanks,

Pierre

Hi how did you fix this.

I have downloaded cover art for my movies and odd ones dissapear all the time.

I keep going back and adding the covers but still they vanish.

I have all thumbnail building unticked and I use the latest MC 14 build.

I do hope you can help as this is driving me insane I can have 40 episodes with all the same cover art and one or two will not display.

Thanks

Cover Art & Thumbnails
« Reply #4 on: October 03, 2009, 08:34:02 pm »

Can someone please help me re Coverart and thumbnails disappearing at random.

I am using MC 140071 and PVDimport.

I have coverart for all my movies kept in the library in my documents on my HTPC

I edit and do most of the work via the lan network I open MC in my office and work on the files in my HTPC.

I have tried disabling build thumbnails in the background to try to see if my covertart will stop disappearing at random.

EG I have 40 episodes all have the same coverart file bit one or two of them will not show up

Movies all have separate coverart some of which just disappear at random.

Where does MC keep the thumbnails?

I have asked these questions before but this is still not fixed.

Thanks for any help it is much appreciated.

Ok so I am bumping this ticket.

Does no one have cover art for their Movies?

Maybe mine are disappearing because I use the office computer to update my HTPC over the network.

Any ideas as this is driving me mad.

I have spent hours collecting covers

Thanks in advance

Hi maid

I still see this behaviour every few weeks. It's usually one or two video files that I KNOW I assigned cover art to (because they're part of a TV series, and I do all of them at once with the same DVD cover art), yet one or two show random cover art sometimes. It's happening a lot less frequently with MC14 than it did with MC12 and MC13, so overall I can live with it.

Mine happens every day.

I was thought that it might be because I do all the work over my network but I tried on the same machine and still do not know what is causing this.

I have one or two that lose their cover all the time.

Cheers

I have no experience of the PDVimport plug-in, but in general video cover art is not very different form audio cover art, except that the source image files are always external and placed on the hard drive. (WMV videos are a special case. In addition to textual tags they can contain embedded cover art if that option is set in the cover art location options).

When a cover art image is linked MC creates a library specific thumbnail image that is placed in a library specific thumbnail cache. A separate fast thumbnail cache is necessary because it would be too slow to read the individual image files from the disk when lots of files are displayed in the same view.

You can see the link contents by checking the Image File library field as I explained earlier in this thread. Its value is the linked image's filename and it includes the full path if the source image is not in the same folder with the video file. Even if you load the same library on another PC the image file link must be valid and the source image must be available.

If you import the video files to another library as new entries you may need to link the source image files manually.

I have looked at the image filename and it includes the full path of the  source image but the image is not displayed.

Thanks

Is the path valid on the PC you are using?

Can you see the image in the standard view if you select the video file, open Action Window > Tag and expand the small thumbnail placeholder on top left by clicking it?

Hi,

The path for the cover art is valid as far as my knowledge goes as it is on a network.

When I click the image as you suggest it states no image.

Thanks

MC can't access the linked source image file for a reason or another.

As a test, could you do the following?

1. Select a video file and check the Image File field's value. Write it on paper or adjust your view so that you can see it during the following steps.
2. Right-click the selected video file and select Cover Art > Add From File
3. Try to browse to the link location and find the cover art file.
4. If found, select the correct image and press Open. (Don't let MC to copy the image to the default location if it asks a permission. The intention is to check if your network location works.)

Hi,

Did that and all works fine.

What I am trying to explain is that say I have 14 files and I apply the same cover art to all of them.

The next day one or two are not displaying.

Thanks

That's odd. When you first opened the expanded image view MC displayed "no image" even though the same path worked later when you added the image manually. The expanded image view goes directly to the file and shows the actual image. In other library views only the cached thumbnail is displayed.

I think MC removes the cached thumbnail if it can't access the source image when the image is supposed to display. Perhaps your network connection doesn't always work reliably.

We would need to find a way to reliably reproduce the problem. The developers at JRiver would need to understand what is happening before they can try to fix the problem.

Well as I have said before.

I have also tried to add the cover art directly on the HTPC and yet when I go back later some of it does not show still.

I have had this problem since day one with MC and I have tried all sorts of things to try and find the problem so it is not a network problem.

Thanks

Missing Cover Art with MC14
« Reply #18 on: February 23, 2010, 03:45:31 pm »

Bump.

I too am losing cover art. When MC14 starts (default view is Audio->Artists), none of the thumbnails in the Artist pane display cover art.

I have checked the option box to download cover art automatically, but all my thumbnails are still blank.

Worse yet, every time I right click on a thumbnail and select Cover Art->Get from Internet, I select the cover art I want--and at this point all seems to be going well--but when I press Save Cover Art, the dialog disappears and the thumbnail that I'd saved the cover art to also goes blank. In short, every time I try to download cover art, it shows up only as long as I have the dialog box open but disappears as soon as I press Save Cover Art.

Any ideas?

Have you updated MC?  Which build are you using?

Is there anything unusual about your setup?  Please describe.

I'm running the latest build of MC14 on Windows 7 Professional x64.

I do not believe there is anything unusual about my setup. As for hardware, I use my motherboard's built-in sound for DAC and headphone amplification. As for software, I think my MC14 options are pretty standard. As for operating system, I've (finally!) got Windows configured properly.

What options in MC14 would affect cover art downloading, saving, overwriting, and such?

Thank you,
Eric.

Under MC Options for File Locations, uncheck "Also store image in the File's Tag".

This will not be necessary in a future version.

Please fix also the AIFF and Wave cover art behavior. The same problem exists with these file types. The default settings do not work as expected. The user must either completely disable embedded cover art (i.e. untick the "Also store image in the File's Tag" setting) or enable Wave and AIFF tagging in Plug-In Manager. Some users may not be happy with either of these two solutions.

I verified the problem reports in the 14.0.144 release thread: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=56072.msg381219#msg381219

I have found the reason, it is when there is a "(" in the name
Why is the file named with album artist and not artist?
