Filter Graph Info:

This is the problem.  "Microsoft DTV-DVD Audio Decoder" does not actually decode anything in any application that is not Microsoft's.

You will need to have another audio decoder such as AC3Filter, or FFDShow Audio Decoder (as part of CCCP).

Thanks for the clarification! I was hoping I would not need any other decoder because it works perfectly under WMP.
Since you seem to be a codec expert, if I install CCCP, how do I select the microsoft video codecs instead of the CCCP for mp4 and other files once CCCP is installed?

In MC, Tools > Options > File Types, select the file type, choose "JRiver video engine (using DirectShow)", then select filters.

I guess that from an end user perspective, an error message that no proper audio decoder is available would be quite useful.

Yeah, but this one is special.  The Microsoft audio decoder does not decode DD/AC3, but it can still be used if the user outputs sound to an out-board hardware decoder via SPDIF.  Many users have such setup.

I'm having this same problem, but I did have sound in .96 and .98.  I have never had any other filter on this system (fresh Win 7 from about a month ago).

I'd Install AC3Filter, it's quite good.

Wasn't one of the advantages of Win 7 that you wouldn't need the codec packs?  Will this mess up anything with Win 7?

Loads of people seem to use it without any problems.  I use Vista and it's not caused any issues here.

If you only use Windows Media Player, this statement maybe true.  Here is what Microsoft says about its own "Microsoft DTV-DVD audio decoer":

"Note  The Microsoft implementation of the Dolby Digital technology is restricted under terms of the Dolby Digital licensing program to use by Microsoft applications."

I'm having this same problem, but I did have sound in .96 and .98.  I have never had any other filter on this system (fresh Win 7 from about a month ago).

Are you sure it really worked previously (with builds 96 and 98)?  Do you use digital output?

Well that makes sense, so I still need codecs for anything other than WMP.  I am not positive that it was working.  I thought it was but it is a new computer so maybe I have only played a movie with MPC-HC.  The file that I remember watching with MC14 was a mkv (still AC3) but I guess that might be the difference.

Thanks so much for your help though.
