Import problems
« on: May 04, 2010, 03:11:52 pm »

Hi guys,

I have a trial version of JRiver running on four different computers and all of them crash all the time. Two HTPCs running Atom, one Macbook Pro quad core, and one AMD generic system, all running win7.

The problem is I love the IDEA of theatre view, when it works, albeit extremely unstable and in none of the computers has the entire music library been imported, there are lots of files missing.

I downgraded to v14 to see if that helped but it does not. I cleared the library and am trying to re-import my mp3's from a single large folder that is local to my main computer. The software says Media Center will add your media to the library... and says starting soon... but the blue windows7 wheel just keeps spinning and I eventually have to kill the process.

Any ideas what might be going on? Perhaps I should uninstall, reboot, install again... I will try that, and I see there is a new build of v15 up.

Thanks
Mark.

What build?

Please try the link called "Stability" in my signature.

Try reinstalling your license.

Try clearing your library and re-starting.

You may have a corrupt library now.

Hi
I am using the Trial beta 15.0.35 and was using the latest v14 earlier today.

I uninstalled v14 opting to remove ALL settings and library, and started again with v15... and it froze at 671 of 10000 files.

Now I have restarted the app, set it to NOT import in the background, set the single mp3 folder as the import folder, chose to import... a single folder and unchecked all options, cover art etc... and this time it stopped at 2 of 10000. The program has not frozen though, I can still access the menu, but after 15 mins, still says 2 of 10000.

Im sure this is not usual, or there would be  a lot more people complaining about it here, but I do hope to find a solution soon as my trial version expires in 25 days.

Hello all,

I have been excited about using MC as my music playback software for my 4 connected computers and Home Theatre system... but have had a LOT of problems trying to import my 21,000+ file library.

I have been setting the auto import folder to my one, single folder, shared openly to all on my network. I choose to auto import, and the process starts but ends soon after. It gets stuck at some very low number of records, sometime 3 or 4, sometimes it gets into the hundreds... Eventually I try to cancel the operation and the programme stops responding.

I have tried Beta 15 and the newest v14 both downloaded from this site. I only have about 18 days of trial left, so would love to get it to work to see if it is worth buying. Ive cleaned the registry of jriver j.river j. river, and redownloaded and reinstalled. Do you know what else I can try?

Thanks, Mark

On one machine, try uninstalling, removing registry entries, rebooting, and reinstalling.

Turn off auto-import and import one directory at a time.

MC will import 10,000 files at a time, but will automatically move on to the next 10,000.

MC has a log that will tell you more.  It's under Help.

Are the files local?

Did you read the "Stability" link in my signature?

This problem could be the same: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=57490.msg390170#msg390170
It's a DirectShow filter problem.

Hi Jim
- The files are all local, and in one folder, D:\mp3
-  I do not have any files purchased from iTunes
-  I did go to the registry and deleted all jriver j.river j. river entries... the problem with "Media Center" is that most those entries are for Windows MC.
-  The only codec I have added manually, other than those installed by Boxee and VLC player is the CoreCodec for playing HD video files using media player classic. I have not messed with DirectShow knowingly AFAIK.
-  I had a quick look at the very long "weird and wonderful problems solved" thread, but its getting late and I fear that thread would take me a week to go through it all.
-  taking it off auto import does not make a difference, just froze at 1 of 10,000 just now.

Help much appreciated
Mark.

How about posting the tail end of the log file for us to look at (it's under Help/logging).

This might give people a few clues...

Not a good idea.  When you uninstall, MC can remove its registry entries.

Try importing just MP3 files, then just FLAC, or whatever you have.

I have no idea of what could cause the problem. The log file doesn't show a crash or even import at all.

I can only ask some questions:

Do any of the few files that might have been imported stick? Can you see them in the library after restarting MC?

Can you play files without importing them? Turn off the Auto-Import feature and drag a few files from Windows Explorer to Playing Now and try playback.

As a test, could you copy some files to a different folder (e.g. to C:\Test or something like that) and set Auto-Import to monitor only that folder? Does it import from there?

Edit: fixed a couple of typos -- and a few more...

Hi, and thanks for the response.
I have successfully imported a single folder with only 500mp3 files, worked without a problem and I can play back those, as well as dragging and dropping a folder to play now. The files do remain when I close the app and reopen it... good news! I guess I could build my library bit by bit, and then could narrow down the problem it if it is file related... though it gets stuck at different places, but these days its usually file 1 or file 2 of 10,000.

I will try import more and report back later
thanks again.
Mark.

I wonder if my log showed now crash or import because I usually kill the process when it is not responding?

Try leaving it for up to five minutes, and see if it unsticks itself, I agree there's nothing interesting in your log.

I'm wondering if you're killing it too soon- I have occasionally seen hangs, but it does tend to unstick itself.

Hi there,
I have left it overnight on occasion, hoping it is doing something, but not showing it... but alas, not.

The very good news is that by adding chunk by chunk, I am almost half done adding stuff, not by using the menu import or by the auto import, but by dragging and dropping folders of music to the Artist window (over the icons of previously imported albums. I am doing aboug 3000 at a time, and so far...

Once that is all done, I will then attempt to share this library with the other two computers on my home network.

Do you know if I would need to buy more than one license to use in one home but on three computers, but only one at a time?

Thanks,
Mark.

Thanks for asking, but there is no need.  Within reason, you can use MC on any of your PC's.

Thats great, thanks Jim.

Im quite excited at the prospect of this all working - presumably its best/easiest to have one MC library (on the computer where the files are stored locally), and have the other two computers reading the library and media from that...

AT LAST!!!
I have imported my entire library... chunk by chunk, but got the whole thing imported. There were some "loose files" in the root of the mp3 folder which might have caused the problem, some video, some text, some image and some compressed wav files for mobile phone sounds... I dont know what might have caused the incessant freezing, but I have got my whole library in.

Also I managed to share that library REALLY easily with one of the other computers in my house, so the others should be easy too.

I will do some homework now, my big questions are how changes I make to the ID3 tags OUTSIDE of J River MC Server will be updated, and how these changes will ripple down to the MC clients on the network. Im reading the wiki.

Thanks for the help, I will be buying this software JUST for the Theater Audio view, worth the price for that alone.

Cheers,
Mark.

... some compressed wav files for mobile phone sounds...

We've seen some odd problems with these.  It's too bad they are called compressed WAV.  If you can reproduce the problem, we'd like to see the file.  Try a search here, too.
