iPhone touch WebRemote appearance available for download
« on: July 29, 2010, 02:02:27 pm »

I thought it was time to release my iPhone / iPod touch appearance for WebRemote. It may have some rough edges, but it is working reliably for me. And if I don't "get it out there" I am unlikely to want to polish it much further.

A zip file can be downloaded from http://brianavid.com/Avid2/Avid2_JRMC.zip. And http://brianavid.com/Avid2/Avid2.htm explains the wider context. In the Zip file is a ReadMe.txt file, which I hope is enough to get you started.

Enjoy

Neat!

I think there's a missing graphic: "Buttons/PlayTab.png".

Also, I'm not getting anything to happen when I click the library button in IE or Firefox.  Do I need to test with an iPhone?

Keep up the great work.

(p.s. I can't figure out how to edit videos with this!)

Neat!
Thanks - it's a reflection of the flexibility of WebRemote

Oops - re-uploaded the ZIP with that file. I had an over-eager "last minute tidy up"

I'm afraid so. Although not strictly necessary for MC, I use "touch" actions instead of "click" in a lot of places. That makes the responsiveness better on my device, as handling a click implies a noticeable delay. So it needs a browser that has touch capability.

Maybe Matt's response in the other thread will help you out with the API enhancements.

Thanks.

But can you clarify what you mean by "I cant see my views". Can you see anything? You should be able to select artists, albums whatever as configured in the WebRemote configuration in the Options panel.

I've just realized that I forgot to include an application icon PNG file in the zipped-up distribution. That will probably prevent you from saving the shortcut on the iPhone desktop as a stand-alone web application. I shall add this tonight.

I will also add alternative events to "ontouchstart" to allow you people to try it out on a PC browser without having to run on an iPhone. The iPhone will still be needed for some functionality, such as the slider.

Sorry about forgetting these

When I select "Library" I only see "Audio", then inside Audio "Artist" appears only, then inside Artist only "All Artist", then "All Albums" only, then only the first song appears, the others dont. The views on MC webremote config are the defaults.  I hope someone can confirm this otherwise something is wrong with my config!

Very Odd.

Do you get the same if you run the default WebRemote appearance? I.e. is the problem in the HTML of the Avid2 appearance or in the WebRemote "engine" itself?

What version of MC are you running?

One thing I need to check is running with the latest "stable" version. I realize now that I am still testing with 15.0.73. If 15.0.80 contans some (unannounced, undocumented) changes to the server-side HTML substitution, that could have broken things. But I doubt it, as the release documentation is generally pretty good.

I can browse ok with the default appearance of webremote.

avid, please check this:

in index.html:

<div class="menuitem"><a OnClick='history.go(-1);'><img alt="" src="Buttons/LibraryTab.png"  style="border-style: none"/>[/url]</div>

OK - understood the problem.

I don't use index.html in my wider setup and ( something else - again!  :-[ ) forgot to update it to redirect straght to playingnow.html.

I will add it to my list of "distribution fixes" to be added tonight. If you explicitly link to library.html (or playingnow.html) the library selections should work.

I can confirm these issues also. It looks like the library when selected, does not dislay contents of the library.
In my situation, I selected music, then it displays all the videos in my hard drive.

I wish, when Music is selected, and with Library, the library contents be displayed with the album arts.

Can this be updated for use with "WebPlay" also. Webplay allows me to listen and hear what is being played.
I am running 15.80.
Thanks.

I have uploaded a new Zip file that should make things better: http://brianavid.com/Avid2/Avid2_JRMC.zip

I am hoping that these problems have been occurring because you have ended up on the (very out-of-date) index.html file. The default "index.html" file should now redirect you straight to playingnow.html.

For those that want to try on the PC, the buttons all now respond to mouse clicks, though you may get a few (ignorable) JavaScript errors from playingnow.html for the touch slider that really needs a touch screen.

There is a temporary Apple icon file for saving it to the iPhone desktop. This should be replaced in due course with something appropriate for MC.

I have tested with 15.0.80. As I suspected there were no changes to the WebRemote mechanism since 15.0.73.

If the strange library displays still occur, then I currently have no idea - it all works fine for me. My top-level library screen is:

Finally, I am afraid I have no plans for WebPlay. This is my own WebRemote project, packaged up for general use. WebPlay does not fit into my setup. That said, I am fairly sure that it would be easy for anyone who wanted to do this to determine the differences between the default WebRemote and the default WebPlay and then use these differences to construct an Avid2 WebPlay based on this WebRemote.

Brian,
I'm going to move this to the Third Party board in a day or two.  You're welcome to announce anything here and point to this thread.

Thanks again for your work.

Sure,

That makes a lot of sense. I had forgotten that there even *was* a third-party board. And it is the right place if there are going to be lengthy discussions about non-core software.

With Build 87 and the new commands it adds I now have functional buttons in my remote program for going into theater mode, up, down, right, left, enter, play/pause, next, previous, and exit. I suspect I'll do more as the occur to me. And for those without his iPhone app, a WebRemote page could be made for running in theater mode, with a link that starts theater mode and buttons to control navigation.

Hmmm ... let me think about that.

I took zones out of the UI design as (a) I don't use zones and (b) general simplification.

But looking at the new zone sync capabilities, it is possible that I could want to start using zones in the future - my current rooms wired for audio are too close together to want different content. But I might want (e.g.) different volume. So they may become attractive if the zone sync can be trusted.

So that leaves the question of where on the screen to fit a zone selector. I think I would want to use a drop-down control. Maybe I could replace the "Back" button with the zone selector. Is a "Back" button really necessary?

As I said - let me think about it. But I doubt I will rush into a change, so it will be a few weeks before I sort something out.
