I am thinking of replacing Zoom Player with MC as the video player for my long-standing HTPC setup. I have used MC for Audio for over 7 years. So if MC also does the Video job well, it simplifies my overall system by removing one component.

But how can I cause a WTV recording file to play from the command line (or MCWS)?

The command line will play an audio file just fine. I can open and play a WTV file via the UI menu. But I can't play it under external control as I do with Zoom. If I run (e.g.) "mc16 /Play C:\File.WTV", it just appears to ignore the parameter.

Any ideas?

Make sure you have build 103 of MC16.  Choose the Red October option under Video.

Set the file associaton on in MC for Filetypes/Video/Windows Media.  Then double click on the file in Explorer.  It should work.

Nope - didn't work. And I now have two problems instead of one. 

Although the Explorer context menu will let me "Replace & Play", this does nothing. And the MC16 command line does nothing either.

On opening the file from the UI menu, the Red October default playback method gave me a DirectShow "Unspecified error" 0x80004005.

But when I changed the playback method to Windows Media Player engine, I can play it from the UI (but still not from MC16)

Were you using RO HQ? I see the same thing when I try to play WTV with RO HQ enabled (getting the same error message as you). The play just fine when Standard RO is enabled.

No I wasn't using RO HQ - just the default RO

Could you email me a log (Help > Logging) showing the failed attempt to play a WTV file?  I'm matt at jriver dot com.

Or even better, do you have a way to make a small sample available?

I got all excited when I saw on the notes for 105 : "When a video fails to fully parse, it's less likely to end up being imported as 'Data' instead of 'Video'."

As that seemed to be implicated in this problem, I wondered if it was fixed. But sadly ... no. It still fails to launch a WTV from mc16. But it is happy to play an old DVR-MS recording from the same directory.

I e-mailed Matt a log from when MC fails to play WTV file in RO HQ. Did you do the same for trying to play a WTV file in RO?

Yes - I mailed a log and also a link to a short (few seconds - 10MB) WTV file that fails for me through the command line. My understanding was that the file was being recognized as data and therefore unplayable.

We are still working on it.

Some of these files require Microsoft decoders.  For now you could try using RO with additional filters and specify Microsoft DTV-DVD Audio Decoder and Microsoft DTV-DVD Video Decoder.

Seems to work now with Red October automatic in 110
