i started a thread earlier on ISO files and was clearly explained the unavoidable delay to mount an iso and have AnyDVDHD decode it.

I am using Ripped DVD's in .IFO format. It takes 90 seconds or more to get the file to start playing. Sort of a double post, I apologize, but didn't want the wrong thread topic heading to cause this problem to disappear. Last two post in the thread below describe the problem and show a dump of a portion of the log, where it keeps hanging. Does anyone understand what is happening here?

Is the file local? Or on a network drive?

Did you try disabling the virus checker?

local file. Virus scanner removed for testing, and no difference... In fact, I am typing this post while waiting for the movie to start. black screen... stuck for 90 seconds or more... I changed to RO (recommended) and did not change a thing. In fact, this problem predates RO, and was present in MC15. In MC15 it resulted in crashes, now it just hangs. Once it plays, it plays w/o problems.

Have you tried ripping a disc with MC? What happens?

If you ripped them with MC, you should not need ANYDVD. Did you rip them using the Action Window process? Or something else?

yup, action window in JRiver. Clicked on rip disc and it does it. AnyDVD is just there for other reasons. I have a collection of older european DVD's with different region codes. However, the movies that i ripped are main stream american goodies. And the rips work. it is this weird delay that I can't figure out. did you see the log file i added to the previous thread? it just hangs and hangs. I can select a .VOB file directly and it has the same problem... I don't think it has anything to do with the ripping process.

I just tried playing a DVD that I had ripped, starting from Theater View. It needed to download some components, and in about 30 seconds, it played. Another DVD played immediately.

It's possible something isn't getting downloaded. Try right clicking on MC and running as admin.

running as admin now. no difference. It will hang at *Locating for the longest time, then screen goes black for an additional 25 seconds and then it plays. I think you are right in that it tries to find something and it doesn't. I disabled my windows firewall. no change. no other protective software on the machine, and mind you, all other software that i use to get online is working fine. this computer is uncomfortably unprotected right now...

let me run another log and see what it is trying to locate...

i found this segment, which i cut off after the first three to four similar lines. that last part is repeated in three blocks. totaling about 45 seconds. Is this a directx problem?

didn't fix anything. Unfortunately, it reset all my zones, links to networked media storage, and everything else too... Still, my movie does not start normally. It stated briefly "acquiring required components" or something... then stuck on *locating. and black screen etc... no changes...

too bad. putting my zones back...

I am at a loss, not sure what is going on. RO and all the advanced options, tried those to no avail.. INterestingly, none of the dvd rips play with the windows merit based option. Do you have any other suggestions?

DVD from a drive starts instantly.

I am using the latest build .145

in addition: no firewall software or hardware. Windows firewall turned off. Even with HTPC in DMZ does not fix this problem.

So playback:
1) From DVD Drive = Instantly
2) From the HDD = 90 sec delay

I'm guessing that MC and the setup is OK then....but something is up with your HDD?

JMone: that would be a logical conclusion, although there are some other aspects that I think happen within J River that don't happen when you start a dvd from the disc. Just to be sure, i copied one of the rips to my C drive which is a solid state drive, and the problem does not go away. This excludes the D (HDD) drive as the problem. Quite frankly, I think this has to do with a problem with codecs and renderers. For some reason, and this was the case before in MC 15, DVD rips do no play on the automatic setting. In MC15 it would simply crash, until the renderer was hand picked to be an older renderer. I am assuming that now with RO it has to go through that failure first and then finally get to the point where it finds one that runs. late last night I tried to go through and reset my codecs and reinstall those. That didn't fix it. I guess the only thing to do next, which is going to be a major pain, is to reinstall windows 7 /64. I am wondering if one of the directshow components is corrupted or something.

You guys know way more about this stuff. But what could JRMC16 be trying to download? and if it is something that the program, for what ever reason, can't get, is it not possible to just download it outside of MC16 and install all of it. Where can I start to try and pin this down? Can i find better clues in the log file?

I had a similar problem once when viewing MKV's. Eventually I installed K-Lite. It fixed problems in my filter chain on install and everything worked fine there after. I was seeing very long opening times of these files.
However that was before Red Octobers time. I'd follow Jim's line of thinking first.

Thanks Mr Criz and JimH. I had to take a break for a week to be able to get back to fixing this huge problem.

So, i am indeed using ROSTD. I uninstalled CCCP and K-Lite both 32 and 64 bit. Reinstalled all three (k-lite both versions first, then cccp). Used the standard options, no changes by me. It did change something. Good and bad. It knocked 55 seconds off. So now the wait is exactly 35 seconds for every IFO file I start. The bad is that now if I click the screen even just once during this *locating process it hangs even longer. Not only that, Once the file starts playing and it switches to the next subfile (eg from the FBI warning to a preview) and I dare to try and click on anything (volume control or anything) it hangs again.

More and more convinced this has to do with a bizarre video rendering problem. If only I knew how to fix that... any suggestions?

With Red October, there is no need to install any filters. They will have no effect.

Try running MC with admin privileges. Right click on the MC program to start.

Try disabling your antivirus.

no difference.... hangs for 35-38 seconds on *locating.

interestingly enough, i ran a previously created .MKV file and it started instantly after it very quickly showed "acquiring required components" followed by *locating for a split second. I re-ran the .mkv file and it didn't show that anymore. SO there is no problem getting required components... gosh, so frustrating...

ok, still having the same problem. However: some things i noted...

1) problem is universal http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?t=61123

2) I don't have any start up problems using XBMC using the same files on the same harddrive. works instantly and perfectly.

3) after my recent complete wipe of jriver, i moved one movie to my c drive (SSD) and that movie plays instantly now, whereas before reinstall it had the same issue.

I am starting to think this has to do with file location / defaults in jriver. Changed the name of the folder to all caps, no change. it has noting to do with hardware, since xbmc runs ifo's perfectly from the same drive. Come on jriver guru's, figure this one out!!! ;-) it is driving me crazy! HELP!!!

whatever was changed since built 168 and the current built made the problem describred in this thread a lot worse.

Black screen with nothing happening for 90 seconds - 2 minutes, strange behavior with screen size / resolution changes when first images start appearing, followed by normal play.

I so hope to find a solution for this problem.... I don't think it has to do at all with my hardware. Other software runs my movies without a glitch e.g. XBMC. Makes using MC sort of a bad choice as my HTPC media software engine.

My guess is a virus checker problem. It needs to analyze the entire file. If so, turn it off.

Virus checker is not present on the computer anymore... I examined that as a possible problem weeks and weeks ago.

The path in capitals and such may be an issue. I put that quote in the previous post myself. However, I can not seem to be able to make it work with or without capitals. Personally, I think this has to do with a registery setting that JRiver created that makes the program search for ever in the wrong place, after which it defaults to windows and it finds the file. Not sure how to explain this better.

What ever changed between 168 and 172 made it a helluvalot worse. Everything else stayed the same... including the absence of a virus checker...

I too am experiencing similar symptoms with .wmv files. All files are on a network attached storage device. I've disabled my windows firewall, and uninstalled all antivirus software. When press play the screen presents "Opening" with the flashing flower for about 35 seconds (sometimes as long as 60 seconds) before playback begins. I'm running Windows 7 and MC 16.0.164. The odd thing is that if I simply double-click the .wmv from file explorer, Windows Media Player launches and plays the file immediately. (Media Center 15--which I used until earlier today--also played the files with no delay. Also MC16 plays local .wmv files just fine.) Is there some MC16 option I need to set to get the same playback performance MC15 and Windows Media Player deliver? I welcome any help members wish to offer.

Ok, problem solved. I have NO IDEA how or why.

Path to fix: I added a third hard drive into my system. I cut and pasted all my IFO file folders (not the root folder, just the DVD's) into a new folder on my new drive. On the new drive, the files ran instantly. Then, to top it off, I deleted all the file structures off the first hard drive. Created a new folder with a new name, cut and pasted all the movies from the second drive back to the first, and now it works without any delay.

lessons learned: has nothing to do with hard ware, or virus killers or anything for that matter. It has to do with a weird way file pathways are accessed. I had to physically remove the file of the drive and destroy all previous directories. Remember, I had moved a single file to another disc and this didn't work. I don't know guys, but this was the longest and most bizarre debug session ever. I am very very happy it is working now. I just wish I knew why it wasn't working before and what exactly I fixed.
