MC16.0.171 can copy the files from the BDMV directory of a Blu-ray disc so they can be played from a hard disk.

A Blu-ray reader like AnyDVD HD is required.

When you press "Rip" with a BD in the drive, you'll be able to modify the name of the movie.

The contents of the Blu-ray directory is copied (without modification) from the disc to a directory on the hard disk named for the movie and located under Video\BD or in the directory you set under MC's File Locations.

The index file will be imported and the Media Subtype will be set to "Movie".

After the copy begins, MC will open "Look up Movie Info" to let you get the cover art and summary.  

You can tell MC to ask whether to rip, play, or do nothing when a new disc is inserted.  This is set in Tools/Options/CD&DVD.

A BD takes about 40GB of space and an hour to rip.  So think about getting that new 2TB drive you've been wanting.

Did you know the basics for repackaging to MKV are already in place in MC?  

Yaobing added this ages ago back in the days when TV Format was only JTV and it was a way to remux the streams to MKV.  As we can now select recording to TS the original need (for me at least) has gone, but the feature remains in MC16 but it is kinda broken and odd.  This feature ONLY appears if the "File Type" in the MC library is set to jtv (but you can just manually change it).  You can then select the file in StdView and go to --> Tools --> Advance Tools --> Convert Format --> Package to MKV!  I did some tests:
1) Repack a real JTV file = Crash
2) Rename a MPLS (eg a Blu-ray Playlist) then did the Repack = It created an MKV but for some reason instread of just remuxing the streams it actually transcoded both the Audio and Video to a very very low quality.  The good news is that it did grab just the correct part of the BD (eg just the one playlist I had setup for a single song) and the streams.

Anyway, it is a very good idea and the foundation is already there.  If JR is interested I'd suggest that initial "Package to MKV" function be:
- Expanded to support any Video File supported by the splitters
- Mux the streams selected in the "Playback Info"

If this all works, then adding support for chapters etc could be added.

Yeah... can we have the same for HD-DVD, pretty please! I think both of the people who still have that format might be MC users. Seriously though, these discs are still kicking around and can be bought for a pittance. If it's not too much work, one-step ripping these to mkv would make quite a few users happy!

I think I'm one of the two with a lot of HD-DVDs.....but even I'd say there is no point anymore.  As MC can not actually play the HD-DVD (there is no HD-DVD navigator filter) there is not much point in MC supporting the "ripping" process (though it is easy to do with AnyDVD HD).  FYI - I've now converted all my HD-DVD to Blu with the exception of the TV eps and will probably break these up as individual files.

I did a comparison of the MC vs AnyDVD HD rip:
- MC is not copying the Certificate folder and it's contents
- All other files are bit identical (as you would expect)

Rest seemed to work well!

I'm ripping Spider-Man 3 right now. Will let you know how the whole process went.

Addendum:
About an hour later I have a rip of Spiderman 3. I had already done a TMDB lookup on the disc, so I couldn't verify whether MC just copied that metadata to the rip, or actually looked it up for me again. It plays flawlessly, as does the disc. (I only tried this 'new' feature of MC yesterday!)

There are a few extraneous files in the designated Rip folder that I don't want to keep. If I delete them, will MC have any trouble playing the rip from the index file? While I'm at it, I think I just wish to keep the main m2ts file, and perhaps one or two of the trailers. I think I'm just going to tag these separately and discard the BDMV folder structure for this movie at least.

If you want to start getting rid of stuff, then I'd suggest using a GUI front end (like ClownBD, makeMKV etc) to select the bits you want to keep, else you may end up with a "broken" BD structure.

I thought this was a possibility. However, since we can't navigate the menus anyway in MC, and I don't want to keep some of the stuff, can I not just import the ripped M2TS files I'm interested in, tag them and be done with it?

You may be better to import and tag the MPLS (playlist files) as these contain the sequence of M2TS files for each playlist.  Some discs will have a single large M2TS file with a corresponding MPLS, but many use multiple M2TS files.
