New JRiver user - Multiple Guide questions
« on: January 02, 2012, 12:35:50 pm »

Just bought & paid for JRiver MC17.

Win7x64, I use the software to watch ripped BluRays and record OTA HD digital TV shows only.

  • What is the best guide to use for just OTA digital channels?  I'm in the USA (Austin, TX).

How can I customize the guide to list channels with labels (CBS, NBC, etc).

How can I get the guide to show which shows are new or repeats?

How can I add custom columns to the guide listing?

Well I figured out how to add custom names to the channels.

And I think I figured out that an "*" by the show name indicates it's a new airing.

But I can't figure out how to make it record only new, unaired shows.  It only gives me an option to record only shows that have not been "previously recorded".  Which means it'll be recording shows from last year, because obviously I haven't recorded those yet.

Also, the guide is only giving me about 1/2 a day of guide data.  Nothing for tomorrow night.

Another question.  Even though I've edited my channels to only show the five channels I like, the guide still shows me shows for all the other channels.  It just doesn't list the channel names.  How can I get rid of them?

Still can't figure out how to get it to display more than a couple days of info either.

Try mc2xml for loading the guide.

You may want to clear the program guide on the load program guide dialog.

Thanks, guys.  I'll try those suggestions out!

Did not realize I was posting/searching in the wrong forum.
Went a little nuts trying to figure out where my thread disappeared to.  :D

Thanks, that helped clear up the unknown channels!  :)

Still having a few problems though, if someone could help.

1) It's only showing about 1.5 days of program guide info.  Is there a way to get a week or two, like WMC does?

2) I can't figure out how to make it record only new, unaired shows.  It only gives me an option to record only shows that have not been "previously recorded".  Which means it'll be recording shows from last year, because obviously I haven't recorded those yet.

This might help:

I've gone through all the thread titles all the way back to 2007 and only found one other thread asking about recording only new shows.

http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=53817.0

And it did not get an answer as to whether or not it's possible.  Has anyone been able to figure out how to get MC to only record new, previously unaired shows?

I do not believe there is a way to only record new, unaired shows.  It is sort of a pain, especially when a station is showing a 'marathon' of old episodes.

Guide data - try changing the date in the drop down box.  It will only show the guide data for the current date in the drop down box.

Bummer.  :(

"Smacks forehead".
Thanks, Alex.   ;D

I assume the recording 'subscription' for a show is just a simple match. If you add an asterix to the name and check the 'use exact name match' or whatever it is. eg. For your example screenshot put in 'Wendy Williams Show *'. This may or nay not work!

Also if you know that a new episode goes out at a certain time on a certain channel, then you can set the recording subscription to just record those episodes at a particular time/day of the week.

Thank you.  I should have mentioned that I did try the "exact name" and "*" trick.  But it did not work.  It was still recording year old shows, simply because it had never recorded those shows before.  :)

I need a simple solution.  I don't want to have to worry about setting up manual recordings because I know I'll occasionally forget.

Does JRiver tech support check these threads out?  I'd like to get a "yes" or "no" answer from them as to whether I can set this software to only record new, previously un-aired shows.

Maybe if the guide can be changed so that the asterisk " * " is replaced with the word "new", then it may work.  Since SQL may ignore the " * " in a string?  I'm just guessing.  It's been years since I supported SQL (on a basic level) and I'm not even sure that's what is running things behind the scenes.

Yes, every day it seems including holidays! I don't think JimH (CEO) ever sleeps!

Yaobing is the TV Guru and I'm sure he'll have a good think about it and post his considered opinion!

Is there a way now or in the near future where recording new episodes will be an option?  I don't want to have to use WMC7 for this function when jriver will do everything else.
