The second list takes up less space and is easier to read, in my opinion. If you look at the bottom of the list, you will see how many tracks there are.
Like many things in life, it's because it's what I'm used to. And because there are over 200M iTunes accounts, that's what many other people are used to also.
When you have the Track # wide enough to see the #, there's plenty of room to include x of y. Unless it's track 300 of 300, but that rarely happens.
Obviously it's not a hard thing to include from a programing standpoint on your part. It doesn't have to be the default display, but it could easily be an option. It would make the transition from iTunes to MC less jarring. Obviously iTunes could learn a lot from MC, but MC could also learn things from iTunes.
As to total tracks at the bottom, how about this. The only things I've imported into MC Mac is the new version of Wagner's Ring Cycle, just as my test files. If I do a search for Name contains Scene, I get a count of 164, but those are spread over 14 CDs. In this case, I want to know track x of y.
