Track #
« on: March 01, 2013, 04:20:36 pm »

In iTunes, I'm used to seeing the Track# column for a given album as 1 of 12, 2 of 12, etc.

Can I get this behavior in MC?

You can, but this will take a little configuration on your part.  It uses some expressions to calculate the number of tracks per album.  Are you interested in doing this?

Thanks but I'm not able to figure this all out.  I tried but it's not working.  Can you do some simple screen shots?

It would be nice to make this a feature request for the new later version.  I don't understand why someone wouldn't want track numbers...

Could an on/off switch be implemented?

Customize the view as per screenshot 1.

Add a new column to the file listing as per screenshot 2.  Right-click the column headers and add an expression column.

Thanks, but something as basic as this should be built in.

Thanks.  I'll give this a try when time allows.  Hopefully some time this week.

I do agree with the above statement FWIW.

Please explain why you think that

1 of 12
2 of 12
3 of 12
...
11 of 12
12 of 12

is better than
1
2
3
...
11
12

The second list takes up less space and is easier to read, in my opinion.  If you look at the bottom of the list, you will see how many tracks there are.

I prefer the second list but I have none.  That's why I think it should be auto in the program.   :)

Like many things in life, it's because it's what I'm used to. And because there are over 200M iTunes accounts, that's what many other people are used to also.

When you have the Track # wide enough to see the #, there's plenty of room to include x of y. Unless it's track 300 of 300, but that rarely happens.

Obviously it's not a hard thing to include from a programing standpoint on your part. It doesn't have to be the default display, but it could easily be an option. It would make the transition from iTunes to MC less jarring. Obviously iTunes could learn a lot from MC, but MC could also learn things from iTunes.

As to total tracks at the bottom, how about this. The only things I've imported into MC Mac is the new version of Wagner's Ring Cycle, just as my test files. If I do a search for Name contains Scene, I get a count of 164, but those are spread over 14 CDs. In this case, I want to know track x of y.

Just to say...

I have to agree.  Most long-time users of MC would prefer it the way it is, but I expect that many iTunes users on OSX would like to see this built in.  It is relatively easy to add the field yourself, but this would be a nice "hat tip" to add for the new Mac version.

To be clear, I do not work for JRiver.  Just an enthusiastic user.  ;)

So, I don't know how much weight my +1 adds, but I figured I'd throw it in the ring for you.

It seems a couple of additional stat fields could be easy to add, since the album analyzer is, or categories views are, probably doing this work already:

 - # total tracks / album
 - total track duration
 - total size in bytes

For multi-disc albums, these should probably track the entire set.

Folks have been clamoring for some of these for a while.

I see.  Well the "MC Beta Team" threw me.  I still say your opinion is stronger than most and since you agree it must become a feature.   ;D

I think the only reason the first option is better is when you don't know how many tracks a release has. I've never cared.

Since I left iTunes behind many many yonks ago, these are the things I appreciate about MC: it doesn't want to hold my hand and assume I can't think for myself. :P

(Apologies if I sound snarky for the people who would want this...I'm just surprised that these cultural differences between Win and Mac are already showing up regarding a piece of alpha software.)

Actually add me to the list who would love to see it as 1 of 12 , 2 of 12 ect.

I like seeing how many tracks an album has at a glance.

Just so everyone new here is clear - you can do this now with two copy/pastes (one in the view's rules, one in a column expression).  Its really that trivial.

Absolutely.  I also think you (JRiver) will get bombarded with this question though with people coming from iTunes for something that IMO should already be ready to go.  If someone doesn't want track #'s, then they can delete those two lines.   :P

MrC not equal to JRiver

He meant the plural "you" not the singular one.

English is confusing.
