MC18 on my Windows 8 crashes every hour
« on: March 28, 2013, 03:48:20 pm »

Since 2 weeks my MC18 crashes when open longer then 1 hour on my Windows 8 32bit pc.
(I'm always on the latest build)

I know in MC I can turn on logging but the problem is when MC crashes, the logfile is not created.

Is there any other way of turning on extended logging so I can try to determine what the issue is ?
I completely reinstamled my PC already and it still crashes.

Please try the wiki topic called Stability.

Think about what may have changed on your PC.

I've read the complete thread "weird & wonderful" and changed some settings on my pc like energy saving turned off for network card.

This is also a clean install of win8 with nothing else then MC18 and dlna enabled on it.

The only thing that changed the last 2 weeks is that suddenly my 2 Digicorder devices (settop boxes for dfigital tv) are appearing as upnp devices in win8.

The crash log shows that the last action before the crash is reading an array list of that settopbox (192.168.0.74)

Could it be that this is causing the issue ?
If so, is there a way in MC that I can turn this off so it doesn't try to read from it ?

Would you be so kind to check the attached logfiles so I can be sure that my understanding of reading the logfile is correct ?

Below a link to the logfile, crashdump file & a backup of my library:

If you think the devices are part of the problem, try turning off Media Network.  If that is it, post about it on the Media Network board.

Something stuck 14 minutes in a call to control the server.  I can't think what this is, but Jim's suggestion is a good troubleshooting next-step.

If Win8 has an "Event Viewer" (like Win7) you may find some addtional clues there.

I followed Jim's good advice and tried MC without media server for a few hours.

It didn't crash anymore so it is proven that the crash is caused by something media server is doing.

I suspect it is caused by my settopbox which since 2 weeks appears as a upnp device in windows and MC (as library to play from) but this settopbox is not accessible as it is protected by the vendor.

The problem is I cannot turn it off for a few hours to test as this is recording almost all the time.

Is it possible in MC to exclude this ip address without having to turn of the device ?
(I tried hide from libraries but this doesn't change anything)

I did this morning another test:

- I decoupled my to settop boxes which are showing as DLNA servers.
- I kept Media Server enabled in MC18
- It played for 4 hours without crashing
- I turned on my settop boxes again
- MC crashed within the hour

This proves that it is related to my settopboxes, MC tries to do something with it and it can't.

I have no control over my settopboxes, cannot enable/disable DLNA on it.

Is there any way in MC that I can turn the scanning of these boxes off so I can use MC without crashing ?
(hide them in MC does not help)

Do you use MC to play to or control other devices?

If not try disabling  DLNA Controller, in the Media Network options.

That's all I can think of..

MC is used as server, I always use my Onkyo amplifier to play via DLNA from MC.
So I cannot turn off Media Server, it's used as server & controller

Turn off Media Network, just to test.

Turn off Media Network, just to test.

Mediastreaming in Windows8 is completely turned off, but MC still detects the boxes as libraries (when trying to load these librarieq, MC gives an error).
In my network settings on my PC these settopboxes still show up as "other devices"

I cannot find a way to make them invisible for windows and MC (cannot find them back in device manager either)

You are PUSHING material to the Onkyo FROM MC or just pulling from the Onkyo?
If you aren't pushing you can turn off the MC controller under the DLNA advanced options.

If possible I'd like to get a wireshark trace of the interaction. You'd have to download wireshark, set the filters and let it run until there is a crash.
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Sharing_Plug-in_Debugging_Hints
You shouldn't try to play anything while waiting for the crash since that would generate tons of packets.

Also, the MC log file after a crash could be useful. If you could email it to me bob (at) jriver (dot) com that'd be great.

Thx Bob,

I'm using MC as renderer and controller at the same time, so I need both (renderer for my Onkyo in my livingroom & controller for my streamium in my bedroom)

I'll try the wireshark thing in a few days as it will be a busy week for me.

For now I blocked the mac addresses in my router for the settopboxes so MC works again, but now my settoppboxes don't work properly anymore.

Thx for your support, I'll keep you posted.

Hi Bob,

I didn't experience the issue anymore the last few days.

Could it have been related to:
6. Fixed: If a DLNA renderer went away while it was being viewed, it could cause a crash.

If this did the trick, thank you very much for it.

Hi Benny, I was hoping that was the problem. It's good to hear that it seems to have fixed your trouble!
