DSD/DoP isn't working (for me) with latest version
« on: May 24, 2013, 07:38:43 am »

I updated JRiver today (18.0.189)  and I can no longer play DSD (.dsf) files.

This is with Kernel Streaming or the new WASAPI.   Usually I use DoP but tried straight DSD.

I have an EMM Labs DAC2X.

Any ideas?

Is there a way I can revert back to an older version of JRiver?

Thanks in advance.

WASAPI terminology changed.  Please see this thread:

Saw that thread, but I wasn't even using WASAPI, I was using Kernel Streaming, which used to work just fine.

Hi,
Same story, no dsd playback using Kernel with Qute HD.
Going back to previous MC version, sounds stupid..

See the notes in the first post about bitdepth.
Hi,
In Kernel there is no bit-depth setting; so I recap: the sole things I can set are - kernel, required by the DAC and bitstreaming DoP.
With these it worked fine, but with the new automatic upgrade I get the something went wrong with the playback message.
Please advice as it was one of the main reasons for buying MC (it was recommended by the DAC manufacturer).
Thanks,
Vlad

JRiver was working so good I just bought licenses for both PC and MAC.....

Then everything grind to a halt....

Like everyone here, I believe all of us who are having issues are using EMM Labs or Meitner Audio DAC.

Hope to sea fix either with the EMMLabs / Meitner driver or the next JRiver version.

In the meantime, any possibility to provide us a link to download the pervious version to continue our DSD playback?

Thank you.

We can add Chord's QBD76 HDSD and Qute HDSD, both using Kernel, which now conflicts with DoP in the last MC update,
So we would like some perspective on the matter!

Toggle the options for WASAPI.  The terminology changed.

Try setting the bitdepth.  Read the first post carefully.

If Kernel Streaming worked, then WASAPI should also work.  Try with the "Disable Event Style" option unchecked and checked.

Ok, I've solved the problem. Thanks, Vlad

@madfloyd

DoP only works with WASAPI and ASIO.

So if you have been using Kernel Streaming, you have been playing DSD as PCM and not bitstreaming.

To keep the behavior you had in the past of not bitstreaming, turn off bitstreaming in Options > Audio.  It's possible the interaction of bitstreaming with Kernel Streaming is a little different now so that you'll get a failure instead of it automatically playing as PCM.

Well that's certainly interesting news. Thanks Matt.

I don't want to keep that behavior; I'd rather bitstream!  I have reverted to version 175 for now (version 189 doesn't seem to work with my DAC) and will use WASAPI Event Style with Bitstreaming.

Thanks again!

If build 175 works with bitstreaming DoP using WASAPI - Event Style, then the latest build will almost certainly work bitstreaming DoP with WASAPI.

It should be as simple as installing the latest build and picking 'WASAPI' in Options > Audio.

If it doesn't work, you might have to manually pick a bitdepth (probably 24-bit) in Options > Audio > Output mode settings.

Please let us know what you find.  Thanks.

DSD works fine for me with 18.0.189 as long as I play from Main Library.  I have Output Mode: ASIO, and BitStreaming: Yes (DSD over PCM (DoP)). If I click on Output Mode Settings it shows my Device as "Benchmark_DAC2 ASIO Driver", and clicking on the Driver Control Panel brings up a neat little screen (belonging the the Thesycon driver) giving me some further options to set USB Streaming mode, Buffer Size and which shows the Clock Source  as "Benchmark DAC2 Internal Clock (Stable 176400)" in the case of DSD. The DSD lights come on on my DAC.

But if I connect to a 18.0.175 library on a different pc and try and play the same file from the remote library, MC still either crashes or hangs "buffering" or stutters if it was playing something. But I can play the offending DSD fine directly from MC 18.0.175 on the second pc. So maybe there is some kind of issue with playing DSDs from a remote library.

Please upgrade both sides and see if it helps.  If not, you might start a new thread.

Thanks.

I started a thread a while back - see here but got no response. Thanks for your suggestion here..I didn't want to try that with .183 as it wasn't stable at the time.  I'll try it out and let you know.

DoP is now fully supported when using Kernel Streaming:

However, we still recommend you use WASAPI unless you are having a problem with it.
